Drink driving limit

Please tell me who was AIBU?
meal out in restaurant last night - partner driving -he drank 2 1/2 pints in 3 hours. I said oh we are walking home - (10 mins max) he said no, I’ll drive, that’s why I only ordered a 1/2 for the last drink. I said it’s still a lot in 3 hours. They told me that the first drink has gone now as that was in the first hour. I disagreed and told
him to Google it… I already knew they answer.
1/2 hour passes we go to leave and he walks towards the car, I said again I’m not going in the car. He was ok then - we will walk ( very angry) and then walked home in silence and he slept on the sofa last night. He did say I was obviously unhappy as I hadn’t said thank you for the meal. I replied you never say thank you to all the meals I cook for you and when I challenged him about that, his reply was “ that’s just not me”.

Obviously you were not being unreasonable. My relative was killed by a drink driver, I won’t even have a shandy and get behind the wheel.
Although quite why you drove somewhere that’s only a 10 minute walk if anyone wanted a drink is beyond me!

sippycupwithstraw · 29/11/2025 09:54

It is a shit show of a relationship- I’ve been in denial-but something just snapped last night.

I don’t you should have any alcohol at all before driving. I know DH has a pint before the match and drives home, and I hate it.

Good. Keep moving forward with how you want to live.

Makingpeace · 29/11/2025 09:56

Why drive there in the first place if it's only a 10min walk?

That aside, time to move on and distance yourself from him. Good luck

sippycupwithstraw · 29/11/2025 09:56

Normally he would have a bottle of beer over the whole evening. So I was surprised that he would even think about driving back. I don’t even have a sip of alcohol if I drive - never have done.

Ok, get your ducks in a row and leave. Who owns/rents the place you live?
No children - good.
Are you married?

sippycupwithstraw · 29/11/2025 10:31

i am in a good position house / job wise. It will be very easy to part ways - I’m just kicking myself that I let things go on for longer than I should. Just feel a bit meh about it all - I know I will be ok. Thanks for all the replies - a tiny bit of me thought people would be saying things like “lighten up” etc because I don’t drink much anyway and I don’t have any if driving. I will not put myself or put anyone in danger on the roads by standing by and not stopping from drink driving.

Do you live together OP?

have you told him it’s over?

Shade17 · 29/11/2025 15:26

Depends on the strength of the beer of course, but there’s a very good chance he’d have been under the limit. Not something I’d risk personally though.

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/11/2025 15:34

It would have been borderline... but its his reaction thats worrying. Especially for just a 10min walk.

DarkSunrise · 29/11/2025 15:42

He was prepared to risk your life, his own life and that of other road users.

I’m betting he’s deeply selfish and self centred in other ways too.

A school friend grew up without her Dad because of a drink driver - his loss has impacted her whole life.

2.5 pints in 3 hours would not have been borderline

and it is concerning you think it is

Extragreen · 29/11/2025 15:44

Department for Transport recommends drinking no more than two to three units of alcohol if you are a man,

each pint has been 2-3 units

so he was definitely not
”borderline” @TheNightingalesStarling

it wouldn’t , also everyone is different, what would put someone over the limit might be fine for another person.
Depends on build , what you’ve eaten etc.

But even then, the poster was talking nonsense because this was around 6 units

and the maximum legal is no more than 2-3 units if you are a main

TheNightingalesStarling · 29/11/2025 15:49

If you use a calculator for BAC it shows it is indeed borderline legal. (It will ve about 5 units, which would have started to be processed.

I agree its stupid, especially for someone who doesn't normally drink. But legal and stupid are two different things.

Edited

Of course it would. He would have had around 3.5 units left in his system,
less than 1.5 pints of average strength beer, a lot of people would be under the limit with that. Too close for comfort for me but there’s a good chance he wasn’t over the limit.

Can you link to the calculator you have used

each pint between 2-3 units
2.5 pints consumed so let’s say 6 units.
