Drink driving limit

Please tell me who was AIBU?
meal out in restaurant last night - partner driving -he drank 2 1/2 pints in 3 hours. I said oh we are walking home - (10 mins max) he said no, I’ll drive, that’s why I only ordered a 1/2 for the last drink. I said it’s still a lot in 3 hours. They told me that the first drink has gone now as that was in the first hour. I disagreed and told
him to Google it… I already knew they answer.
1/2 hour passes we go to leave and he walks towards the car, I said again I’m not going in the car. He was ok then - we will walk ( very angry) and then walked home in silence and he slept on the sofa last night. He did say I was obviously unhappy as I hadn’t said thank you for the meal. I replied you never say thank you to all the meals I cook for you and when I challenged him about that, his reply was “ that’s just not me”.

i am in a good position house / job wise. It will be very easy to part ways - I’m just kicking myself that I let things go on for longer than I should. Just feel a bit meh about it all - I know I will be ok. Thanks for all the replies - a tiny bit of me thought people would be saying things like “lighten up” etc because I don’t drink much anyway and I don’t have any if driving. I will not put myself or put anyone in danger on the roads by standing by and not stopping from drink driving.

Update us when you've got rid, OP. He's a waste of space.

Men who expect praise for something women do as a matter of course aren't worth the effort.

It's good you don't have DC together, is his name on your lease or mortgage, if not you can kick him out as you say he's done other things to annoy you lately.

Can you link to the calculator you have used

each pint between 2-3 units
2.5 pints consumed so let’s say 6 units.

https://www.drinkdriving.org/bac-calculator.php

Used 5 half pints normal strength beer, with 30min lapse time the OP mentioned. For a 12st man

Shows blood alcohol content just below legal limit.

But as it says.. dont rely on it to prove you are legal.

BAC Calculator

BAC calculator to calculate your BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) level. Provides accurate estimates of blood alcohol content after consuming alcohol.

2.5 pints = 5 units. You process 1 unit p/h. After 3.5 hrs, he would still have 1.5 units in his system which is over the legal limit. If he's a big man, he might have breathalysed under. I wouldn't drive with any alcohol in my system to the point where I wouldn't drive the day after a big night out.
This isn't the point though. You were worried and he didn't heed this at all. That would be my concern here.

You have assumed England

well and truly over the limit for Scotland

True. But I thought everyone inscotland knew that even one pint can put you over know?

(I agree BTW that England's limit is probably too high. Personally I stick to the alcohol free beer or Coke when driving)

blacksax · 29/11/2025 16:07

In my humble opinion, the ideal amount of alcohol in your system when driving is nil. Nobody should be at the wheel of a vehicle while under the influence of any kind of substance that affects your judgement, no matter how little you've had.

I agree he sounds a complete twat that e can't handle his alcohol

Doggielovelouie · 29/11/2025 16:10

I was told the limit is in there to cover things that may be in food etc - it’s not good to see it as allowing whole glasses

yes it comes out your system in a hour but that’s when you stop - doesn’t count if you are still drinking

I always thought it only gets processed when you stopped???

otherwise if you had a drink an hour you would always be under limit

Changename12 · 29/11/2025 16:16

I don’t think you can rely on these calculators working the same for everyone and it is better not to chance it. I just don’t understand why you drove in the first place.
My husband and I will both walk a couple of miles there and a couple of miles back so we can have a drink.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/11/2025 16:18

The reason for the ‘limit’ should be to allow for naturally occurring alcohol in things like orange juice. Or digestion. Not to drink as much as you can!. The Scottish rule is right.

Whether 2.5 pints is borderline legal or not, it’s not OK. Trying to work to the legal limit isn’t the same as being as sharp for driving as possible (often in the dark, wet, bad visibility).

He’s a dick, it’s a great ‘final straw’.

Your body is continuously processing it so you start timing from first sip if you're drinking steadily. If you had one drink then waited a few hours and then drank several, you couldn't count the hours. If you had three units in quick succession (glass and a half of wine) you would need to wait 3hrs to be legal again or 2 if you're in a country that allows you to have a unit on board.

Grammarninja · 29/11/2025 17:07

If you had strictly one unit an hour, you would be under the legal limit one hour after you finished. People often don't know what one unit is though.
