...As a joke, 'every time you repeat yourself i want to shoot you in the head'..??

OP posts:
MysticalPombear · 24/08/2025 08:25

Awful. It's quite an out there thing to say to someone really.

MysticalPombear · 24/08/2025 08:26

Do you see it as a joke or find it funny, op?

Questioning01 · 24/08/2025 08:29

I mean it just kind of shocked me.? .. he has a history of being emotionally abusive but not in this way....I mean he was joking but because of his history it makes me question it more I guess...

OP posts:
HappyToSmile · 24/08/2025 08:31

Ah, the old "I was only joking" retort. Which i imagine he says a lot. No, it's not ok.

MamaElephantMama · 24/08/2025 08:32

How much are you repeating yourself? It becomes frustrating after a while but when he has a history and your are questioning the joke then it’s probably over due ending the relationship anyway.

AuntieDolly · 24/08/2025 08:34

I’d be really upset. That’s a horrible thing to say

Dryshampoofordays · 24/08/2025 08:34

Are you finding yourself repeating yourself a lot because he blanks you OP? With an abusive history I don’t blame you for not finding it funny. Are you happy with him?

PersephoneParlormaid · 24/08/2025 08:35

That’s not nice at all.

ACynicalDad · 24/08/2025 08:36

Pretty grim, tone and context might soften it a bit, but if it’s part of a wider pattern of behaviour it could make it even worse.

Dippythedino · 24/08/2025 08:37

I'd report him to the police on the non emergency number and let's see if he finds it funny then. Especially with his previous emotionally abusive behaviour, it won't be long before he becomes violent. Let the police know that he's made a threat to kill and discreetly audio record it on your phone if possible.

CaffeinatedSeagull · 24/08/2025 08:40

Don’t understand how anyone can believe that saying something like that could be a joke. There’s a line and that one crosses it.

Everyone can say stuff they don’t mean in the heat of an argument … but how a person deals with it after says a lot about their character. If I said something similar I’d be apologising, and not trying to bat it off as a ‘joke’.

If he’s saying things like that regularly than that’s a massive worry.

Plastictreees · 24/08/2025 08:42

‘He has a history of being emotionally abusive’. I don’t think this is in the past. This is not okay OP.

Notmyreality · 24/08/2025 08:52

Context is everything. Ignoring the ‘emotionally abusive’ history for a moment:
Do you have a history of repeating yourself a lot? If so why?
What was happening immediately before he said it? What prompted him to say it?
What tone did he say it in?
For example,
If you’d been nagging him incessantly to do something he said he would do and after the tenth time in 5 mins he flipped and made the comment in a jokey way then I can understand it, clumsy as is it.
If you are reminding him for the 2nd time in an hour to do something he promised to do half an hour ago then you are not being unreasonable.

I would believe him.

sandwichlover93 · 24/08/2025 09:01

Unfortunately many women are murdered by their emotionally abusive partners. So I’d leave him and report it to the police.

I’m sorry but that is never an acceptable thing to say. This is bonkers.

Endofyear · 24/08/2025 09:02

I can't imagine my partner saying anything remotely like that to me! It's nasty and if meant as a joke, not funny.

What do you mean he has a history of being emotionally abusive? Why are you still with him if that is the case?

TwilightSkies · 24/08/2025 09:03

I wouldn’t be with someone emotionally abusive. Ever.
Why are you still with him?

Enko · 24/08/2025 09:05

It would have got a very stern
"Do not ever speak to me like that again"

If I got a "I'm only joking" my response sould be. "I'm not laughing its not funny"

I woild be reconsidering the relationship.

Walkerzoo · 24/08/2025 09:05

There was a recent case where the hubby did just this .. to his wife, 2 kids and then himself

Get the heck away when you can

It’s only bonkers in MN land.
In the real world people say dumb shit all the time. Whether you have an issue with it or let it go and move on depends on context and history and many other factors.

YesButNoButMayybee · 24/08/2025 09:08

Why are you still with someone who has a history of emotional abuse?

Why are you shocked?

If you’re okay with your partner telling you they want to shoot you in the head then I’m deeply concerned about you.

Anna467 · 24/08/2025 10:02

It wouldn't bother me in my relationship, I come out with this sort of hyperbole all the time myself. But it sounds like you should have left this relationship long ago if he is emotionally abusive and saying things like this as well.

Quite. This is not normal behaviour in the world I live in!
