My husband always wanted a lazy Susan for the garden table. What silly thing has your partner always earned after?

A banjo. There is a bit of a backstory because our first and one of our only big fights in nearly 18 years was because he got drunk in uni and spent all his student finance money on buying a banjo and we were meant to go off travelling and then he suddenly had no money to travel, and I was like, wtf do you think I’m going to fund us for 2 months of backpacking around Asia?! He returned the banjo.

But always still wanted one, some weird Deliverance fascination or something, so I got him one finally for his birthday a few years ago. He went through a period of about 8 weeks of learning from YouTube videos and I haven’t seen it come out since. 😂

EllieQ · 13/05/2025 09:38

A blacksmiths forge. Though he did say that would be ‘more practical’ when he’s retired and can devote his time to it.

He already has a sword (does historical reenactment), so I suspect he’d get on well with the DH who wants a suit of armour 😀

BeardOToots · 13/05/2025 09:42

In My 20s and 30s I used to bring home all sorts of things I’d coveted, guitars, collectibles, weird bits of dumped furniture I’d found in the street.
Possessions just don’t really do it for me any more, but now my 22 year old son fills the house with spoils from his latest obsession!

2JFDIYOLO · 13/05/2025 10:04

Mine regularly walks in the door with a triumphant 'look what somewhat was getting rid of!'

Cue another fucking piece of tut someone left on the pavement because they couldn't be arsed to take it to the tip.

Meanwhile I am stealth decluttering.

ScottBakula · 13/05/2025 10:08

@TheNightingalesStarling , I have also always wanted a drinks globe , and a ox blood leather Chesterfield arm chair.
I live in a mid terrace 2 up 2 down 😄

Feelingstrange2 · 13/05/2025 10:14

Gravel driveway!

Funny thing is we need a new driveway really but are on such a steep hill gravel wouldn't make sense.

....and our son has just bought his first house and the driveway is....gravel 😆

Sgtmajormummy · 13/05/2025 10:14

Mine talked for years about getting an exercise bike. I made noncommittal noises because I KNEW it wouldn’t get used.
Bought last November and used maybe 10 times. Now it’s the place where we hang dog leads and stuff to take to the bins.

I, on the other hand, want a green glass library lamp. 30 years and counting…

Octocat · 13/05/2025 10:25

Wasn’t there a MNer a while ago whose husband wanted a flagpole? Wonder what happened there.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 13/05/2025 10:26

A mannequin dressed in full Napoleonic uniform. Unfortunately we don't have the room as we live in a 3 bed semi 😀

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 13/05/2025 10:32

Not a thing - a job. He’s always wanted to be a long distance lorry driver or a postman. He thought being a postman. would be stress free, until the day, I asked our postman how he was? All he talked about was how stressful the job was! As for lorry driving…..😂

We live on a 3 bed semi, not Downton Abbey.

I thought it was just mine, he's been hankering after one of those for years😆... We also do not live in Downton & to top it all he's tea total🤭. I have not a clue what the attraction is!

Redshoeblueshoe · 13/05/2025 10:43

I have a lazy susan.
I would love a drinks globe.
DH would love a barometer.

I got the green glass library lamp! Saw it in local antiques shop when we were desk hunting for me to WFH. It's brilliant.. noted I rarely switch it on but it's beautiful. Goes on my green leather topped ladies writing desk. I love it... Note we live in a 2 bed bungalow 😆 Desk lives backend of the sitting room.

@Caledoniadreaming I personally need to know about the swimming pool! Do you use it often? I would so love one but apparently they cost a lot to run!?

It's an above ground job, hasn't been used yet because we needed mats to go underneath it - which have just arrived. He's got all the kit and caboodle to go with it (including a solar cover which he got very excited about), including filters, and a selection of weird looking things I don't think I have the energy to ask about.

I read reviews online which suggested that particular size could take about 23 hours to fill, but once it is filled you don't need to change the water because of the filtration system. I'll report back...

The whole aim is to help our 5 year old with his swimming, which I have no doubt it will do, but it's definitely on the large side.

We've got a neighbour with a flagpole. He changes the flags almost every day. Was a bit of a laugh for a while but since my Dad has come to live with us due to dementia its a real highlight of his day, I open the blinds in the morning to see what the day is like and Dad can see the flag "of the day" and loves it.

Oh that's lovely! I'm in NI, where flags are a little more, erm, contentious. Grin

TurtleCavalryIsSeriousShit · 13/05/2025 13:33

A wood burner fire place. We live in South Africa! Granted... winter in Johannesburg can get cold for approximately 3-5 business days, but during the day it's hot and sunny.

I wanted a gas fireplace that I can flick on in the cold mornings while he's still in bed (not an early riser). Instead, I'm stuck with a wood burner that is way too much effort. Don't get me wrong, I can light it, I just can't be arsed.

But it does make him happy when he's chopping wood and fighting to get it lit.

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 13/05/2025 13:55

DW wants a massive pick-up truck. everytime she sees one out and about she mentions it.

she's a teacher in a suburban secondary (in the village where we live), with later teen DCs whos' outdoor interest equipment basically amounts to a pair of football boots and a water bottle each!

DW herself is very much not an outdoors person at all either.

would be an utterly pointless purchase.

on top of that, our NDN already moans about how much room our 2 (normal-sized) cars take up.

MissAmbrosia · 13/05/2025 13:57

A Lambretta. A classic one that he can restore. We live in a fifth floor apartment and don't have a garage. 🤔

I have one, and a two seater sofa (both second hand) and live in exactly the same kind of house.

What I lack in living room floor space i make up for in happiness.

Get one!

averythinline · 13/05/2025 15:05

Check out your local charity shops for globes... I was really tempted to keep mil when clearing her house but dh vetoed as it would take up too much space.(True small house)... So it went in the hospice house clearance.. they were deliighted
I'm still hankering after it though!

And have plans for a chesterfield when we do up the front room..
