I was once part of a research study looking into this! They morphed a photo of me into various men’s faces if I remember correctly and then I had to rate them for attractiveness. They didn’t tell us until afterwards that our faces were morphed in. I have no idea what the results were, but it must be a genuine thing if they were funding research on it.

Ooh, was it the study mentioned in this article?

An example is a study in which Scottish researcher David Perrett of the University of St. Andrews found that men often favor women who resemble their mother when choosing mates. Similarly, the study showed that women prefer male faces that resemble their fathers. These findings were later reported in a 2002 New Scientist magazine article titled “Like Father Like Husband."

Upon closer examination of the study, the interpretation that was offered by scientists and in the piece in New Scientist seems questionable. During the study, researchers presented subjects with photos of strange men and women for a fraction of a second. What the participants didn't know was that among the photos they were shown was a photo of themselves altered to look like that of the opposite sex—feminized or masculinized versions of themselves. Participants found these altered photos particularly attractive and researchers believed this was because the pictures reminded test subjects of their mothers or fathers.

I thought my type was someone who reminded me of my mum or dad, which one is it?

Are there any more types or is just the two?

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/04/2025 18:02

No. I have fair hair and brownish green eyes. I have always found men with dark hair and blue eyes particularly attractive.

Weird. Literally the exact same. Spooky!

Any dark hair/light eyes works.

MsNevermore · 24/04/2025 20:12

No.
I’m petite (polite way of saying short, with the figure of a pre-pubescent boy 🫠), naturally very blonde (I dye my hair dark), see-through pale and have green eyes.

The vast majority of ex’s, including the father of my children were significantly taller than me, olive complexioned, dark hair, brown eyes, and a stocky build.

My DH is 6’5”, built like an NFL linebacker, dark hair, tan, hazel eyes.

My “type” appears to be the exact opposite of myself.

blackfriday1 · 24/04/2025 20:12

Me and DH look very alike, both quite Germanic in our colouring, body types, facial features. I have always loved this theory but I didn’t think about it once when we first met. However as time has passed and the more people have commented, we both see the resemblance and find it very amusing. Our DD is uncannily like both of us, it’s quite strange. He’s a handsome chap though so I take it as a compliment!

BoIIocks · 24/04/2025 20:12

DH and I could literally pass for brother and sister.

It’s weird because he doesn’t look like my actual brother, he just really looks like me.

Dave Perrett was connected with the department and and the date looks about right, so probably yes! I remember it being something to do with dads as well. Was a bit freaky when we’d been told we’d been rating pictures with ourselves blended in 😂

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 24/04/2025 20:17

No. I'm a fleshy, curvy type and i like practically cavaderous men....

ThirtyThursday · 24/04/2025 20:24

@CalypsoCuthbertson I reckon there's definitely something in that theory.

I look quite similar to my ex MIL, God help me! Ex is very enmeshed with his mother, so I can see why he was attracted to me. 😲

He doesn't resemble my Dad at all but my ex & I looked quite similar when young & were often mistaken for being related to each other.

I have aged better though. 😉😆

CalypsoCuthbertson · 24/04/2025 20:27

@ThirtyThursday i was going to say that theory about falling for someone who’s like your opposite sex parent, but that link says it originates from Freud’s Oedipus complex theory and Jung’s electra theory and they’re not widely believed anymore! I think there’s a lot of truth to it though - it’s just too weird for most people to contemplate without it freaking them out!

coxesorangepippin · 24/04/2025 20:31

My brother and his wife look like siblings

BCBird · 24/04/2025 20:33

Not at all. Like pale, bald and chunky. I'm black and have a head of hair😄

ScottishEggs · 24/04/2025 20:35

DH is 6 foot 3 and looks like Charles Dance. I am 5 ft 1 and look like Steve Buscemi, despite being a woman.

So, no.

But my closest friend has an unsettling habit of choosing men who look like they could be her twin. Indeed one of them was usually mistaken for her twin. Scarily similar.

Possibly the answer is that people are unique and what attracts us to each other is often intangible.

Sulu17 · 24/04/2025 20:36

No. I want someone attractive please.

3rdtimeidiot · 24/04/2025 20:38

coxesorangepippin · 24/04/2025 20:31

My brother and his wife look like siblings

I look more like my partners sister than his actual sister does

sellotapechicken · 24/04/2025 20:39

Absolutely not. I’m short & fat and my type is tall skinny men

Ribenaberry12 · 24/04/2025 20:40

Nah, I have a better beard than DH!

AgnesX · 24/04/2025 20:45

As a short fat ginger definitely not. DH is a long skinny baldie lol. We have blue eyes in common and nothing else.

DramaAlpaca · 24/04/2025 20:46

No, my type is very different to me.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 24/04/2025 20:52

Yes, it's a well documented fact that many people go for someone who looks similar to them. Many women go for men who remind them of their father, and many men go for women who remind them of their mother. Some people say that people grow to look like one another as they get older They don't. They looked like each other to begin with.

Neurodiversitydoctor · 24/04/2025 21:11

Interestingly ( or maybe not) I resemble my DDad, DH looks like my DM and my Dsis ( DD also has similar looks) while DS resembles me and DDad.

Dery · 24/04/2025 21:14

I’ve heard it said that people are attracted to those who look like them but physically I find difference more interesting and attractive than similarity. None of my boyfriends have looked like me and my DH doesn’t either.

GeorgianaM · 24/04/2025 21:31

My husband is blonde and Germanic looking and I'm an English rose type.

I have a friend who I have known from school and she hasn't really changed much over the years, she's very attractive. Her two sons both have partners that are identical to each other, one is British and the other Australian and they could pass for sisters but they are also the spitting image of my friend at the same age.

Same hairstyle and colouring and they all wear very similar clothes.

Her boys don't look anything like her and are the spitting image of their father so when they are all together the girls are mistaken all the time for being her daughters.

Sassybooklover · 24/04/2025 21:45

I have a type: tall (6ft+), well built men with short dark hair, eye colour unimportant and no facial hair!! I'm 5ft 2, slim, brunette and blue eyed! I married a dark haired, brown eyed, stocky 5ft 9 man!! 🤷

feelingalittlehorse · 24/04/2025 21:48

There might be something in that you know, OP.
Mainly because the game “Brother or Significant Other?” is one me and my friends play quite regularly when out……..
