Well, I hope you're GDPR compliant!

Nah, I post it all on the darknet for the highest bidder. That’s my ‘business’ mentioned above 😂😁

mondaytosunday · 13/02/2025 13:40

It is not normal practise no. You've paid a deposit that is enough. You pay the balance on receipt of a healthy pup. You should be able to visit the pup and its home at agreed times too - and should have done so before paying the deposit. I have heard of a holding fee (to prevent time wasters) before viewing which is refundable if you, after meeting the pup, decide to not go ahead.

User7288339 · 13/02/2025 13:47

I'm surprised you would pay over a £200 deposit without any contract or contact details for her

A lot of people with younger children can't adopt dogs, {for the good of the dog}
But the poo crosses...there are supposedly loads in rescues at the moment.

There's really not, take a look yourself. That was rubbish spouted by a poster on here once.

The majority of dogs in rescue are staffies, lurchers and greyhounds, generally. There was actually a thread a few weeks ago where quite a few people posted what was in their local rescue. The amount of poodle crosses mentioned? Zero.

Yeah, that comment makes me suspect you're not. It's no laughing matter, you could be heavily fined.

Sigh.

If you ask stupid questions, you get stupid answers.

It's not stupid. You're handling people's highly sensitive information and then instantly get defensive when asked about it. It's your huge fine though, no skin off my nose .

Why would someone need bank statements?
Assuming for future veterinary care.
I pay vet insurance, but would definitely have said no to providing any bank statements.

Vets fees can be terrifying though...was in vets recently to pick up routine wormers and someone was paying over £5,000 for their much loved moggie. 🐈
I hoped they were insured.

But it is a stupid question to ask, isn’t it?

If I’m not handling it properly, I’d just lie - and you’d never know. And if I am, then I could still lie and claim I’m not - and it wouldn’t affect you in any way.

I didn't actually ask you, I said I hoped you were GDPR compliant, more to flag it to you than anything else, but you instantly got defensive. Like I said though, not my problem.

SuperTrooper14 · 13/02/2025 14:16

You've dodged a bullet, OP. A reputable breeder wouldn't normally ask for a holding deposit until you'd seen the puppy for the first time and been given a copy of the parents' health scores and a copy of the contract. The fact she doesn't want you to take the puppy to a vet for a basic puppy check within the first 72 hours is the biggest red flag. Our breeder actively encouraged us to get one within a day of us taking our girl home. Why would she be against it if there's nothing wrong with the puppy's lineage?

DingDingRound3 · 13/02/2025 14:18

StarlightLady · 13/02/2025 08:39

Bank transfers are instant.

Not from all banks. Just because yours is, that’s still not universal.

Ylvamoon · 13/02/2025 14:21

Breeders should spend time (I literally go through bank statements) vetting prospective buyers

Gulp! As a prospective buyer, I would walk away.

hairbearbunches · 13/02/2025 14:26

She can have as many stars as she likes on Facebook, doesn't mean she's accredited, licensed or reputable. I'd run a mile. She sounds like a backyard breeder. There's a word for people like this. It starts with C and ends in T.

But also, sorry to be so blunt, £2500 for a poodle cavalier cross?

A litter of 9 or 10 at £2500 a pup? No tax. Big business. No welfare. Poor dogs. Until people stop being prepared to pay these kinds of breeders that kind of money, dogs will continue to be abused.

How do you know she's not paying tax?

This is costing us £2500 and I need to make the right decision here. I may have to pull out as I think she is short and coming across as rude too. She has been from the start?!

I will try get £200 back.

I don't know why but I feel she is rushing things along - I would rather pay rest of money upon collection not £500 then the rest..

That's the pressure part..

£2500 for a mongrel 😮
with no insurance or pedigree, absolute bonkers!

Rescues have pups too.
Sorry about your daughter. That’s horrible.

Edited

Many tears are really strict about rehoming their dogs with children below 5 it’s a no no. The amount of grief the rescue got about being particular about rehoming with children. Most are ex breeders & need a resident dog. Sorry you had such a poor experience.

fandangored · 13/02/2025 08:36

Problem is I know nothing about her! No info, no details, no address all online. I've not received the contract yet! I want to see it. She's sending paperwork out in the post in next few weeks..

I would likely feel pressured to buy puppy upon viewing day.. having already paid a "pre reserve fee" of £200 - viewing first then collection 4 weeks after..

The dog is a cross breed of poodle and cavalier hence why not KC as they only have single breed.

Mum and dad should be KC though, I hope so!

So you didn’t check that the parents was KC registered??!!!
There is no guarantee that your puppy will be hypoallergenic with this mix. Do read up on the man who was the first breeder of labradoodles. He regretted hugely that he created this so called breed . He will tell you there is no way to guarantee a hypoallergenic dog with these doodle crosses . There are lots of beautiful dogs with reputable adoption agencies . We have had 4 adopted dogs and with training that all dogs need they are wonderful dogs.

bugalugs45 · 13/02/2025 15:55

I paid £2500 for my puppy ( he was KC ) i paid a deposit after the first viewing of £500 , then the remainder the day before picking up just in case of any issue with bank delays .
I would never pay a deposit of any sort without seeing the pups with mum .
I also saw evidence of his veterinary records ,
In my experience you get a vibe from your breeder & vice versa , I still have a great relationship with mine and regularly send photos of my dog who's now 3 years old .
I'd back out of this one , you've broken down trust before you've even seen the pup .
She should give you the £200 back though .

Shame he forgot this when he announced to the world he'd created a hypoallergenic dog despite knowing by then 2 of the 3 dogs he'd bred were not as such!

I wouldn't trust a word that comes out of his mouth!

fandangored · 13/02/2025 16:39

The breeder reply:

I tried to call you a little while ago to have a chat, all the parents health certificates will be ready for viewing day I’m not going to keep sending you details as there needs to be a level of trust here. Also I am travelling to Guildford on the 23rd for my annual heart testing with the BVA for all of my girls.

Petplan do not offer 4 weeks free insurance anymore they stopped this back in October last year.

Everything is as promised in my initial email to you before you paid your pre reserve fee.

(I do get the feeling she has been messed around hence tone)

YES I am clueless here :/ I totally admit I have a lot going on in my personal life and I feel I am moving fast to provide dog for my son... I've been looking for months since last year - she seemed good in terms of what she says/offers/health history etc.,

Wolfiefan · 13/02/2025 16:49

Honestly OP if you have a lot going on then now may not be the time to add a puppy to the mix. I currently have a 15 week old and it’s hard work. If she’s awake I’m watching what she’s chewing and if she’s about to pee.
Maybe time to take a breath and think. I don’t know if you’re anywhere near the NEC but Crufts is on next month and they have Discover Dogs where you can meet different breeds and ask questions.
Or make contact with some rescues. Depending on what you want and what you can offer there are a lot of dogs that end up in rescue.
