Neighbours cameras in back garden

youllsan · 30/07/2024 08:47

We have neighbours around us who have cameras up high on their houses so we have no privacy in our back garden.
There is no need for this as could have put cameras up half way on their houses and would not have infringed on our privacy.
I think this is weird and intrusive.
What do others think?

Pur cameras are only turned on when we're in bed or out. They might not be on 24/7 ask them

I thought that the field of vision of the camera would be set to black out property that isn’t theirs. So it wouldn’t matter how high it is, your garden should be excluded.

you could ask them. If they don’t tell you, you could tell the police, who would them go and check.

Why is this a thread? Just go and ask them 🤣

It's a thread because I made it to get other people's opinions! Why do you think it's a thread?
Some people aren't easy to ask or can be difficult?

Rewis · 30/07/2024 09:33

It is likely that they're only pointing at their yard.

youllsan · 30/07/2024 09:34

I think one of neighbours camera moves

Are you sure they can see into your garden? Can you go round and ask to see what the cameras cover?

If they do and your neighbours refuse to move them, I'd go to the police.

It is unlikely that the police would consider using CCTV to record you as harassment, without other misconduct by the person.

outdamnedspots · 30/07/2024 11:36

@RubberyChicken - not in my county. The police officer I spoke to said they would certainly come out to talk to our neighbour about his CCTV cameras, and to remind him of the law.

Peonies12 · 30/07/2024 11:39

Cameras can only film your own property, or public areas like the pavement. I'd be furious, it's a massive invasion of privacy. I cannot understand all these cameras etc people have, it's shocking.

WatieKatie · 30/07/2024 12:02

It is very difficult to establish an exact coverage area of a camera just by looking at it.

When I had CCTV installed, the company blacked out any neighbours windows and doors that were in view. The one overlooking my back garden only covers my garden. If a neighbour asked to view footage I’d be happy to show them.

If you’re worried why don’t you speak with them?

@ShuviTupya Ring doorbells will only record what you set them to record. Mine was programmed to only cover my property. My neighbour opposite had her van broken into and asked me to set the camera to include her house.

LaughingElderberry · 30/07/2024 14:15

You need to ask them. You have no idea otherwise if it's a problem - or not.

Our back camera is positioned high up but only covers our garden up to the fence line (but not over it). Which our NDN knows because when they had a break-in they asked us to check if we had any footage and we showed them that the camera view didn't cover their property.

@youllsan @Peonies12

I can't understand why people are filming everything. It's concerning that so many people seem to think this is normal & have installed cameras. Even if I'm not doing anything dodgy I don't want to be filmed - either by my neighbour or my partner/parents in my own home. Some people film in their living rooms too.

Exactly I feel same.

If neighbours can see right in our garden they are not going to say 'oh yes we can see everything in your garden'

Fucks sake, you really need to ask to see where their cameras point. I’m happy to show our neighbours where ours show, up the shared drive which is long and very dark at night, my front door, my back door, down the side of my house.

That’s it.

They can show you on their phone, you don’t need to go in their house.

There has been break ins in my area so I want some security. It’s not hard to understand. I guarantee that the camera will only be pointing in their garden. Mine is up high and that’s all you see

K0OLA1D · 31/07/2024 07:57

We have cameras high up on all corners of our house and cannot see anything but in our garden and the feet of whoever walks past for the second they come past the front garden gate.

We'd show anyone who asked

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 31/07/2024 08:02

People saying they don't understand why people are filming.
We put cameras up because we had a group of six masked men in our back garden at midnight with a drone, when DH told them it was private property they started shouting and threatening to cover back and smash all of our windows and burn our house down, police responded quickly but even if they didn't come back and cause damage it's well a known tactic that some burglaries are plotted using camera drones. If you have visible cameras they are less likely to target you. Once we had them installed the number of people going down our alley was astounding. Ours have a speaker and are connected to our phones so after a few times of telling those on our property that it was private property and they were being filmed we don't get people drug dealing or urinating in our alley anymore. We initially had our boundary asset to only include our property then our neighbour asked if it covered his drive, we explained we'd restricted it and showed him he asked if we would move unrestricting it so we did and caught someone trying to steal his bike from the bike shed he has in his drive.

I have already said one of neighbours camera is pointing in my back garden not their property

Can the cameras see any more than the neighbours could see looking out from their upstairs windows?

Unless you're going to plant trees or a high hedge, you have no privacy anyway.
