Last night.

'Shall we have a look at what Money Saving Expert says about the advantages of getting married?

Might be a good idea?'

I'm not sure how I'm feeling right now.

My dad, back in the early 1950s, showed my mum his pay-slip, and said 'I could keep you.' This was back when women were expected to give up ther jobs when they got married, so it was a consideration, but it wasn't exactly fireworks and roses!! It was my dad all over though.

HelterSkelter224 · 25/07/2024 11:25

We got engaged cos my husband had to come up with something to give me for my 30th birthday 😂

otravezempezamos · 25/07/2024 11:28

I did know one (not me) that was 'I'm pregnant', 'oh right, I suppose we should get married then', is that what you want', 'sure, just let me divorce my wife first'.

LlynTegid · 25/07/2024 11:29

I think many proposals have just gone overboard. So in a way the low key one I admire, though think the choice of words was poor.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 25/07/2024 11:30

I know one case where their solicitor suggested it following a terminal diagnosis.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 25/07/2024 11:34

@JFDIYOLO what was your response to that? ‘yes, we should look at rings then…’ Put money where the mouth is, excuse the pun.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/07/2024 11:36

You could have got down on one knee (which I would have hated).

Caaarrrl · 25/07/2024 11:42

I just told my husband that we would marry. 25 years next year.

Nevercloserfortherestofourlives · 25/07/2024 11:44

When our firstborn son was a few weeks old my husband said to me
‘I suppose we should formalise our arrangement now we’ve got Ben’
I didn’t know what he was on about at first.I was living in his house and we had separate bank accounts so I thought it might just be sorting out finances, but it was his actual proposal. 😂

KreedKafer · 25/07/2024 11:46

We're all different, but personally I would prefer this to a 'proposal' any day of the week!

KateDelRick · 25/07/2024 11:47

That's genuine, honest and practical. He sounds great! Also not into performative gestures 👍

Cadela · 25/07/2024 11:49

My ex (not fiance!) asked me when I was going to marry him when my parents bought me a house. He said “well I want half”. I was like 😳 no thanks pal.

That's actually really sweet!

TwoBlueFish · 25/07/2024 11:55

Mine was very similar, we’d been together a long time, had kids and a mortgage and it was the right thing to do to protect each other and make things legally easier.

TeaandTimelords · 25/07/2024 11:56

My PIL were seeing their local vicar sorting out a christening for their eldest and my FIL asked if they could get a discount if they had a wedding at the same time

This is the worst one! 😬 Hope you went onwards and upwards after that Cadela.

I proposed to my husband. In bed. He cried because he was so happy. Super soppy, I know. We had a low key wedding with our respective kids and families. It was Nice. I don’t like the big OTT proposals.

I always find it strange that people want a church christening for their child but didn't get bothered to get married first?.

Disturbtheuniverse · 25/07/2024 11:59

@Cadela Definitely the worst! Glad he is an ex.

FunIsland · 25/07/2024 12:01

‘Marry us then’ was mine. By text.

It was perfect, I’d have hated a grand gesture.

Eart · 25/07/2024 12:02

I bought my own ring and never got a proposal.

25 years though and happy.

GnomeDePlume · 25/07/2024 12:04

We had been talking about my DB's upcoming wedding (200 of their closest friends, Cecil B De Mille production) and saying what we would do differently (all of it).

While we were washing up I said 'shall we do it then?'. He said 'yes'. So we did, coming up 33 years ago.

KateDelRick · 25/07/2024 12:04

My husband said "shall we go to Brent Cross when it's late opening on Thursday?"
"Why?"
"We could look at the jewellery shops, buy wedding rings then have one of those hotdogs"
We've been married a long time 😊

Joystir59 · 25/07/2024 10:27

I got a text message that simply said " will you marry me". We hadn't even been on a date, just knew each other as friends and colleagues. I felt a wave of incredible happiness wash over me when I read the message. Done deal.

I hate to hijack your thread OP but I need more on this story!! Did you get married immediately??
