To take my boyfriends dog

dogoverman · 05/05/2024 19:10

I have just found out my boyfriend has hit his dog and I am disgusted

She is a lovely thing, and he hit her for eating something she shouldn't have

I want to take her for good but I live in a flat although I am planning to move this year

She would have a good life with me I think despite living in a flat I can afford doggy day care when I am working and I work from home three days a week and live in a nice rural area

Of course YABU. You can't just take the dog Confused

Seapsweetsesamethingy · 05/05/2024 19:29

Absolutely take the dog. I’m horrified that he hit the poor little thing. Yes do it 100%.

Anotherparkingthread · 05/05/2024 19:35

Legally you cannot just take somebodies dog. He will call police and accuse you of theft. Which will be much easier to prove as you will have his dog than him causing any harm to the dog, which police likely won't give af about anyway. You might be able to ask him if you can have the dog.

And what do you think the boyfriend might do about that?

MortifiedStill · 05/05/2024 19:36

or ring RSPCA who will call round and have a quiet word with him

Dareisayiseethesunshine · 05/05/2024 19:37

When my dd left her ex she took his ddog. He didn't even ask after it..
Guess who ended up with ddog??
Have loved her for 7 years..

No one can advise you what would be best for the dog unless they have way more info than you have given here. From the little you have said it could easily be that you will be making this dog's situation worse rather than better.

Just don't do anything without serious and realistic thought about what the dog needs and what you can provide - and about what complications for the dog could come from a conflict between you and your boyfriend on the issue.

LunaFinnTeddyAndIndy · 05/05/2024 19:39

I’d report him, but unless he’s willing to give you his dog, you can’t really just take her. I would want to take her from this horrible man though.

Opentooffers · 05/05/2024 19:52

Unfortunately I see dog owners hit their dogs out in the street quite often, you can't save them all. However, what you can do is decide that it is way beneath you to date a person who would do that.

ZekeZeke · 05/05/2024 20:01

You don't say ex boyfriend . Are you staying with this POS?
And no, you can't just take something that doesn't belong to you, that's stealing.
I would report him and dump him.

LoudSnoringDog · 05/05/2024 20:03

RSPCA will do nothing

if you can get the dog away without any consequences then do it

dogoverman · 19/06/2024 23:05

Well as an update I took her with his permission
It's been a month now, we have our routine and she is snoozing away next to me, we go out at least two hours everyday
I ve joined a solo camping group and I m getting my flat on the market to move house

Lucky dog. Great update, OP!

Hopefully you dumped the boyfriend !

dogoverman · 19/06/2024 23:14

I have , I ve spent so much of my life pandering to me and trying to please them

Turns out all I needed with a beautiful dog who is always so happy to see me and shares my bed and my sofa

Tomorrow I have a day off and I am going to the beach with her

I expect we will share some fish and chips and she can have a swim and then we will come home and have a nap before we have a stroll around the park

Aw, that’s lovely.

Scrollbreadroll · 19/06/2024 23:45

@dogoverman the dog will be your best friend and the love and loyalty a dog gives is priceless. So glad you took her.

Thelnebriati · 20/06/2024 01:10

Did he update her microchip registration? Look into getting that done asap.

Blackbeardsvest · 20/06/2024 02:00

I love that you took her OP, didn't see the thread when you first posted but it's exactly what I would have encouraged you to do, with or without his permission Smile My friend's dog was taken by her son's ex and the police did nothing so I doubt you would have had much comeback either way but I'm glad he made it easy for you to get her away from him. It certainly sounds like she's landed on her paws anyway, her life with you sounds utterly idyllic and she deserves every minute of it.

RedHelenB · 20/06/2024 02:12

If course you can't.

andyourpointiswhat · 20/06/2024 02:13

I do love a happy ending!

Without permission. But since he's given it enjoy your dog.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 20/06/2024 02:37

The police wouldn’t do anything anyway!

Glad you have the dog ☺️

dogoverman · 21/06/2024 14:21

She is the best dog in the world and deserves the best life

Just contemplating whether I can work remotely from a campsite
