Child teacher not responding to me

Child started reception in private school.. since she started I’ve been in touch initially quite a bit she also had a fair amount of time off due to being poorly etc.,

I don’t get a good vibe from the teacher toward me specifically.. she interacts verbally with other parents at pick up on occasions..

she doesn’t interact with me and recently hasn’t replied to my email asking for a bit more info regard child’s social/emotional wellbeing - as he doesn’t seem too happy.. the email was general, would be nice to find out further information surround the wellbeing of child this term.. could we touch base in a few weeks to get your thoughts so u can understand better and support more..

should I call a meeting?

I don’t want to badger but at the same time feel like I need to know more what’s going on..

one of the other mums made a joke that the teacher rarely gets back to her, but they are actually on what I would call friendly/chatty terms and I felt this maybe a dig at me!

My little one coming home not happy, tummy sore and a bit anxious- I think they putting pressure on.. also kid hit him last week which I flagged and she must have spoke to child but I got no reply.. something off key with her honest, I’m not a raging psycho or pest - just a concerned mama..

I did think about either calling a face to face or email the head.. the parents evening never focused on any social/emotional at all.. also no time for questions as teacher admitted running over with other parents..

getting a bit fobbed off here is the vibe and that makes me wanna contact her 😂 perhaps that isn’t the right approach at all..

I’ve given a lot of distance but in my mind the parents who chat/informally their kids seem happier

I’m looking forward to a new / hopefully more approachable teacher for next year

@Spendonsend brill, thanks - I think so too.. but unfortunately her unapproachable nature makes me not want to meet her. She’s very cold.

I'd think that those reasons would be enough to want to speak to the teacher.

Perhaps email the head of year and just say maybe you wanted to check you had the correct email address as you hadn't heard anything back from the teacher?

I hope your child settles soon.

How often do you email the teacher?

BoundaryGirl3939 · 29/04/2024 22:46

I was a primary school teacher in the past, and honestly, some of the parents could be overwhelming. It's a really stressful job and dozens of things going on in the background that parents don't see. Asking for emails about emotional well being might be too much.

How old is your child? I taught a class of 8 year old for 4 years and there will always be infighting and rough play with children. The teacher most of the time has no control over this dynamic.

BoundaryGirl3939 · 29/04/2024 22:48

My parents never stepped in to rescue me when I was at school. If I had a problem, I had to develop the skills to sort it myself. Perhaps pull back and allow your child to develop those resilience skills.

This is a 4/5 year old, though.

OP, if you are concerned about your child being stressed to the point of illness and about them being hit by another child, send an email saying that, not some vagueness about emotional well-being.

@SheilaFentiman the class size will be 15 max in private prep school. Most fee paying schools will be selling themselves either based on being a nurturing environment or on strong academic results (or both), and it’s not unusual for parents to have a quick informal chat with teacher at pick up. OP should ask for a quick chat with the teacher or make an appointment to see her. This is usually encouraged if parents have concerns outside of regular parent evenings or if the slot at parents evening hasn’t been sufficient duration to cover everything.
