Is November a bad month to get married?

Settle a debate: Is November a bad month to get married?

My sister is getting married, and picked November 5th as her wedding date. Her MIL has decided this is a problem because “November is an unlucky marriage month” and if my sister and BIL get married then “they’re doomed to fail.”

I think this is absolutely ridiculous because it doesn’t matter what date a couple marries. If they’re doomed to fail, they’re doomed to fail. A date isn’t going to change that.

However everyone else my sister talks to seems to agree with her MIL. I googled it to see what these superstitions everyone is referring back to, but all I can find is how November marriages are positive and blessed.

So please, for the sake of my sister, can anyone tell me if November is a bad marriage month? Did any of you marry in November? Is all of this completely ridiculous like I’ve said 10000000 times???

(I can’t believe this is taking up my Sunday btw)

My friend got married in November and nobody thought it was unlucky. It was a lovely day - a bit chilly but bright and fresh. Nice not to be too hot as the bride/groom I reckon. And your sister will always have fireworks on her anniversary each year!

BurntWindowcleaner · 30/07/2023 14:53

If your sister is giving this the slightest headspace, she’s not mature enough to get married. See also Friday the 13th, wearing black to weddings, throwing salt over your shoulder, stepping on cracks, walking under ladders.

Dotcheck · 30/07/2023 14:54

I think if your sister listens to that sort of tripe she’s not mature enough to get married.
However, you may want to trot out other superstitions.
It’s lucky if it rains on your wedding. Bad luck to see bride/groom before the ceremony. Lucky sixpence. Something old, something new…
There’s so many and all ridiculous

EBearhug · 30/07/2023 14:55

No. Used to be fairly common in agricultural communities, because it's a fairly quiet time of year.

ChronicallyUnhappy · 30/07/2023 14:56

Oh my god ok so I asked a mutual friend and in her words “it’s bad luck in Zimbabwe”…

WE ARE NOT IN ZIMBABWE

(My sister is mature enough to marry by the way. She just suffers from OCD, and one of her things is bad luck. She’s the “don’t walk under a ladder or step on a crack” type. She’s in treatment, but no matter how treated you are, certain things can still get to you.)

I married 7th November 1993… still married…. To the same person. 🥰

I got married in November, last year. Probably too soon to say if we’re doomed 😂 but I can say we’re as strong as ever and had a wonderful day that was bright, sunny and warm with a lovely crispness. In fact we did group photos first and then told people to go on to the reception and get a drink (we had mulled cider as once of the welcome drinks and an autumn theme) and nobody would go as they were all enjoying standing outside in the nice surrounds. Our photos are beautiful.

RedDawg · 30/07/2023 15:01

Ooops, I met the 6th November 1993. 😆

Loub55 · 30/07/2023 15:01

We got married in November. It was a lovely crisp sunny day and then we had some snow flurries on the evening! We had a wonderful day and still going strong 9 years later 😁

At the risk of being blunt her mil is a bit thick if she thinks marriage success is determined by the month

But no doubt shed be in her element of told you sos if it didn't work out 😀

sheeplikessleep · 30/07/2023 15:05

We got married in November, married 17 years in November and still going strong.
Was cold for outside pictures, but dry and bright and sunny.
Ive never heard November to be unlucky.

MissMarianHalcombe · 30/07/2023 15:11

I met my DH in November, got engaged in November (not same year for clarity!) Admittedly got married in February but still together 26 years later.
On the other hand my first marriage was in June, no connection to November-and that was doomed to fail. Largely down to my first husband being an abusive arse compared to my now DH who is not. November or any month is just pure lunacy to base the success or failure of a marriage.
I think I definitely go ahead with a November wedding if told not to. But then I can’t stand such nonsense.

She once made her own son change his clothes before coming into the house because he was wearing black on a holy day

She’s nuts

Are you in the UK? November 5th is bonfire night so you'll probably get visible fireworks somewhere in the nearby sky for free!

I think Nov is a nice month for a wedding. Dec tends to get you Xmas themed weddings which takes some of the focus away from the actual wedding. Plus December tends to be a very busy month so can be difficult with getting guests to attend (and not have it feel like yet another thing they have to do & pay out for) whereas November is quieter.

FfoxRedN · 30/07/2023 15:20

How ridiculous.
I got married in November (10th) and we had the most perfect crisp autumn day. No rain, trees were beautifully autumnal for photos, no one got too hot. I wouldn't recommend getting married in any other month 🤣

toomuchlaundry · 30/07/2023 15:21

Parents got married on 5th November, according to my DM so that DF wouldn’t forget their anniversary! Married so long they got a telegram from the Queen!

spurs4ever · 30/07/2023 15:21

I got married in November (first time) and I know 5 other couples also married in November. All bar one couple is now divorced but it was nothing to do with the dates lol.

Daffodilwoman · 30/07/2023 15:24

I’ve never heard this before.
It will be cold and possibly raining but if that doesn’t bother her then why not?

MariaVT65 · 30/07/2023 15:27

What a load of bollocks!

I got married in November and no one ever mentioned this. We saw some advantages

-Don’t have to worry abour rain during a summer wedding
-We were happy with an indoor venue, still managed some outdoor photos
-The venue and photographer gave us discounts as it was off peak
-More availability than summer so more choice of venues

sevsnrems · 30/07/2023 15:29

I was married november 6th and we have been together for 16 years and still going strong.

Tomeeornottomee · 30/07/2023 16:06

Married in November.. just about to celebrate 27 years.

RunningKatie · 30/07/2023 17:53

Married in November, gorgeous autumn day, mulled wine for drinks outside during photos.
12 years this year, not planning on trading him in at the moment

UsingChangeofName · 30/07/2023 18:29

Yes, of course it is.
I though you were going to ask from some sort of practical reason - I dunno, weather or something.

The only possible reason I can think of is their Silver wedding party might clash with a Bonfire night party Grin but, against that, she will have the sky light up with celebration fireworks for their anniversary every year (if they are in the UK).

Absolutely bonkers.

ChronicallyUnhappy · 30/07/2023 21:22

Thanks everyone! Sister agrees it’s nuts and is going to go ahead with her November wedding anyway, but she’s happy to see others agree with us that her MIL is bonkers.

Her MIL and FIL (who is normal, btw) will be over at hers for dinner tomorrow night. If she brings up her idea that November is bad, I’ve offered to crash the dinner and just scream over her until she leaves 😂😂😂😂
