Messed up Father’s Day - how can I fix this

Saythreehailmarys · 18/06/2023 15:21

My DH goes to lots of effort on Mother’s Day, and I normally do for Father’s Day. We arrived back from holiday really early this morning so I didn’t have much time to sort anything, so I just ordered a card from Moonpig and an evoucher. DH is miffed I didn’t make more effort - like making him breakfast in bed, etc. Feel like the day is ruined - what can I do to make it up to him?

How old are your kids?

pippinsleftleg · 18/06/2023 15:23

Tell him to grow up

ElectricMagpie · 18/06/2023 15:25

After a holiday I'd take the time and quiet to nap as the greatest gift. Given the circumstances what more would anyone want? :/

YouJustDoYou · 18/06/2023 15:27

God, grow up man.

OnceUponATimeInChristmasTime · 18/06/2023 15:30

If this was the other way around, the OP would have been told her husband had weeks to organise something. That the occasion didn't just pop up out of the blue. Obviously, breakfast in bed was unreasonable but I think an evoucher, unless specifically requested or the only option due to location and logistics, is quite a lazy option.
You could have bought a gift and wrapped it before you went away.
Or given it to him on the flight home.
I would be miffed if I was him too. Especially as he puts effort into your day.

hattyhathat · 18/06/2023 15:32

Breakfast in bed is silly anyway but put a reminder in your phone and order brownies or fudge in the post next time.

Floralnomad · 18/06/2023 15:32

How old are the kids as they are the ones who should be doing something , if they are small then he needs to be happy with what he’s got .

wildfirewonder · 18/06/2023 15:32

What? He sounds a bit hard work.

DD is 2.

God, grow up man.

There's plenty of women on here on mother's say with similar complaints I'd say breakfast in bed isn't that high an expectation.

sunshineandshowers40 · 18/06/2023 15:37

Make dinner? Did you discuss his expectations before going away? What did you do last year?

Floribundaflummery · 18/06/2023 15:37

Make cake? Go for picnic tea somewhere nearby? Hope the day goes better OP.

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/06/2023 15:38

Next year he’ll probably make much less/no effort for Mother’s Day. Are you okay with that?

You could have made more effort, you chose not to.

But if DC is only 2 there’s not much to “usually” so if you don’t want to celebrate these days just tell him and neither of you needs to bother.

Littlemissprosecco · 18/06/2023 15:38

Nip out, get his favour meal, bottle of wine for dinner, job done!!

wormshuffled · 18/06/2023 15:39

Still half the day left. Have you got a nice meal for dinner you could cobble together?
At the risk of getting flamed there is time after DD is in bed to give him some special attention?

DappledThings · 18/06/2023 15:42

Card is plenty. What a load of fuss. DC insisted we do breakfast in bed today which neither of us really enjoy but pretend to for their sake but they are old enough to have the idea themselves. Making a huge deal of it on behalf of a 2 year old is silly.

Saythreehailmarys · 18/06/2023 15:50

He’s not that into posh food so I might surprise him with his favourite takeaway.

The PP who said I could have been more organised - you’re right, I could have. I wasn’t able to make breakfast this morning as we didn’t have anything in (shops were closed when we arrived home this morning). Feeling crappy about it.

Irritates me when mums or dads whinge about shortcomings of mothers/fathers day… you’re grown adults and it really isn’t a big deal.

I didn't meant to make you feel crappy about it, I've forgot plenty of things over the time. My post was more aimed at the PPs who were irritated that your husband was upset. If you had written a post about your husband doing a similar thing in Mother's Day, there would have been plenty of posts saying your husband should have been better prepared.
You were likely sorting everything out for the holiday and so it it was easy to overlook today.
You could tell him that you knew you'd all be tired after your journey home so had planned to do a surprise Father's Day next week.

Howabsolutelyfanfuckingtastic · 18/06/2023 15:57

You've just come back from your holiday so I think he needs to factor this in instead of feeling disappointed. Get a nice takeaway later and watch a movie with a couple of drinks if he fancies it. He'll get over it and realise he's being silly.

Gowlett · 18/06/2023 15:59

Take away tonight. Sorted.

Saythreehailmarys · 18/06/2023 16:00

Thanks so much everyone - some really helpful ideas here :)

Thing is anything you do now is too late

Mummy08m · 18/06/2023 16:15

If it was me I'd just be honest about how you wish you could have done breakfast etc, and suggest pretending next Sunday is father's day and do the breakfast in bed thing then.
