Is sleep texting a real thing?

confusedinmyrelationship · 04/06/2023 09:48

I received the following texts from my partner yesterday afternoon, he said he has no idea how they were sent. Saying it must have been sent when he was asleep. Do you think this could be true or do I need to accept that he is talking to someone else and sent it to me by accident?? Clearly there is a typo in the first message but I can’t get my head around the ‘show me how good 😅❤️’
Please can I have your advice 😢

Is sleep texting a real thing?

First typo is witnesses should be princess.

You all good princess, show me how good

rainbowstardrops · 04/06/2023 10:31

Hmm, I don't think he's being very honest with you here.

I might believe it was sent while asleep or half asleep.

But perfectly constructed and including emojis? No.

IME if you receive a message that looks like it was intended for someone else, it was.

Sleep texting is definitely a thing. I used to do it all the time when I was a teenager. If I received a text and I was asleep, I always replied but it made no sense whatsoever. The words were always spelled correctly, they just made no sense. I texted a friend asking if they wanted me to buy their kids some clothes as I was sick of them wearing baby clothes 🤷‍♀️ (they had no children, they were only 16 like I was 🤣) and another friend I texted asking them what were they doing out at sea in the middle of the night 🤔

All that aside, it could be innocent op, as I've said it is a thing. He could have been dreaming and sent you a text, or it could have been meant for someone else. Do you know if he was asleep at that time?

With phones being more advanced and having autocorrect, it's not likely that words typed would come out like that.

Also, I used to sleep text and would form proper sentences and words always spelled correctly. This was before smartphones even existed.

SapphireStar77 · 04/06/2023 10:36

It seems a bit random to me so it could be possible. And it seems to be more than one person which seems a bit strange ie not an affair

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 04/06/2023 10:37

Half asleep, sending a message that seemed a good idea during a dream, that you can't then remember when you wake, I could just about buy.

I've written myself notes during the night that were obviously VERY IMPORTANT but are really just 'twenty seven jugs, three by four'. But I've always been awake when writing them, just with my brain still half dreaming.

But your message seems well dodgy, OP. Not random enough. And with emojis correctly used. Even my most coherent night time ramblings have been full of misspellings, and I doubt I could even FIND an emoji in my sleep.

At 12.10 ?? In the day. I don't think so

Muncha · 04/06/2023 10:42

Does he call you princess?

An0therQuestion · 04/06/2023 10:43

I’m going against the curve on this one.. I have actually be known to sleep text in the past. One of which was after watching Harry Potter.. my text to several random people read as “I’m busy playing quidditch for you..” 😂

newtb · 04/06/2023 10:50

You can programme text messages to be sent at a specified time. Could be the answer.

mumofboys8787 · 04/06/2023 10:51

Lol seriously don't be so naive

I'd say more likely he did something he shouldn't have done and is now checking his mates will cover for him - maybe a long standing agreement he's now checking they're still good for in a light hearted way. He doesn't sound like he's texting an AP, no.

hiredandsqueak · 04/06/2023 11:02

My son has text me a few times during the night when he has been asleep. They don't make much sense but they are words/sentences rather than random letters. As a child he would talk in his sleep and you could have a conversation of sorts. I just see it as an extension of that. It's usually only me or his sister he texts although did once message a group chat with his friends and work colleagues.

HeyMummeee · 04/06/2023 11:08

I have sent sleep texts many times so could be true

booboo24 · 04/06/2023 11:20

I'm not defending him here as I too think he's asking for help to cover something up. HOWEVER, I'm a prolific sleep walker and talker, I can look completely with it, I've fed the cats, even ran myself a bath before only to be woken by by now ex husband! I do send random texts in my sleep too, and I bought and paid for a phone case off eBay years ago, I only knew the next day when I saw the confirmation email, so sleep texting IS a thing, but in this case, I doubt it - do you know if he could even have been asleep at that time?

I agree, ask to see his phone now, see what his reaction is.

2 of my dc sleep text! I is 16. One 33!! Text absolute rubbish usually to other siblings - ones near the top of text message list... One also used to find money and hide it. Once in a pan. Once in a magazine I nearly threw out! Younger one used to leave voice messages whilst asleep too. Don't be quick to point the finger op.

But did they 'sleep text' DURING THE DAY, asking people to cover up for them?

That's quite specific though, isn't it. And it's a pattern of behaviour that's likely to have been present and consistent over a long period of time.

Not a perfectly constructed anomaly.

Sleep texting? How stupid does he think you are?

Sleep texting? It sounds about as real as "sleep one night stands" or "sleep visits to a prostitute" to me.

shieldmaiden7 · 04/06/2023 11:58

I used to sleepy text my DH when we first started dating and still living separately. It would literally be when we were in bed saying good night. I'd be so tired by the next day I'd see I sent him complete nonsense much to him amusement 😂
Sorry but I wouldn't believe him.

Same here only when I've really tired and I'm assuming a noise has half woken me up and I still do it maybe three times a year usually says something like

'Lovv e yku'. Which I assume I'm saying love you.

booboo24 · 04/06/2023 12:24

@GreyCarpet I know, I've been quite the source of entertainment to family and friends over the years! I agree with you, which is why I said I doubt it's the case with him. I was mainly answering the op's questin about whether sleep texting is a 'thing' ...it is...!

salamithumbs · 04/06/2023 12:26

I've sleep texted before, no spelling mistakes or nonsense words but it didn't make sense because it was related to whatever dream I was having...like I'd text 'did you take my suitcase?' and my friend would of course be baffled. But I also sleepwalk sometimes when I'm particularly tired and do things like empty the dishwasher, change clothes etc . No memory of it in the morning, I only know I've done it if someone sees me and tells me later, or I wake up fully dressed!
So it is possible but I would also be suspicious in your shoes I think 🤔

Smartiepants79 · 04/06/2023 12:27

You can do all sorts of things whilst sleeping so I don’t know why texting should be so unbelievable.
I have friends that have rearranged furniture when asleep. My Dd sleep walks and talks.
I’ve no idea whether your partner is one of those types of people or if he was likely to be asleep at that time of the day??
