Can some one help me around this rash

Hi not sure if I posted in the right section my screen is broken

my daughter suddenly came up in a massive all over body rash. I’ve added pictures
we had a picnic in the park on Sunday, and then on Monday we had a walk by the Riverside and walked through the adjacent park, used the swings .
On Monday evening, there was some red marks on her back which looked like welts, so gave her Loratidine andI took her to the gp Tuesday morning and he said they were better than the day before and to do nothing ( I showed him photos)
an hour after seeing the GP, the rash became progressively worse and worse and covered her from head to toe, so I took her to A&E and they gave her steroids and piriton
this morning, she has a leopard print rash all over her body
I’m stumped as to what caused this so I can avoid it in future , the hospital said they can’t identify what exactly caused it
the only other time she has had an allergic reaction was when we walked through the park in lockdown and her face swelled - but no rash
just wondered if anyone had any ideas of what can cause this sort of rash . She’s itching like mad ! And nothing seems to cool the rash

Back to the GP OP

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 08:35

Banana1979 · 31/05/2023 08:44

Has she had a virus or antibiotics recently? My DD had this about a week after finishing antibiotics- she's was only 13mo so they couldn't pin point if it was a rash after virus or sensitivity to the antibiotics even though she'd had them a number of times before. Gave her piriton everyday but it still took about 5 days to clear x

dizzydizzydizzy · 31/05/2023 08:50

Hope you have managed to get a GP appointment today OP.

I get an allergic all over body rash sometimes after having a viral infection. Has she had a
Cold recently?

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 08:51

Banana1979 · 31/05/2023 08:44

@GiveupHQ it’s worse yes x

Did the hospital give you any meds to take away?

Banana1979 · 31/05/2023 08:54

Yes they have given her steroids
has had a cold for the past week is very snotty nose, cough and sneeze apparently the doctors don’t think it’s related.
I was worried about Scarlett fever, but her tongue seems okay
I am trying to get through to the GP, but the surgery is just engaged all the time

The hospital said only to bring her back if she starts to swell
so I’m feeling a bit stuck

I asked whether they had given you any med to administer at home or the piriton.

she needs a piriton

yaboreme · 31/05/2023 09:01

I think they look like hives, and agree with other posters that perhaps she needs more antihistamines. Can you send the new photos to your GP and ask them whether she can have an emergency appointment?

Newuser82 · 31/05/2023 09:04

My son had something that looked similar as a baby. It did go away eventually. We were told to give piriton until it went.

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

Banana1979 · 31/05/2023 09:07

thank you all , she had piriton at midnight last night, so I will give it to her again tonight

just upset now that I’m going to have to avoid the park for the rest of the summer , I wish there was some kind of test I could buy which could tell us exactly what was causing it!

GiveupHQ · 31/05/2023 09:08

Is it only one a day?

endofthelinefinally · 31/05/2023 09:12

Be aware that piriton causes constipation so keep an eye on that. She has enough to be dealing without large, rock hard poo.

Banana1979 · 31/05/2023 09:38

@GiveupHQ yes it can only be given once

That looks like urticaria, it is an allergic reaction can be caused by many things. I had urticaria my whole childhood and mine was titled "idiopathic" as they never found the cause. Top tip from one sufferer to another, trying not to scratch is almost impossible, cooking with water will make the itch more intense and then best tip I ever got was if you have to scratch don't use your hands use a greetings card held in a curved shape and scrape the edge of the card along the skin, you won't do damage to the skin but will satisfy the itch for a while. Mine progressed from sometimes on my limbs and body to eventually spreading onto my face, eyes and mouth with potentially fatal consequences so be cautious and always go to a+e if there's lots of rash and it's spreading. You can draw a line around large welts with a time on them so you can see how fast it spreads. I grew out of it by the time I was about 20 and haven't had it since.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 31/05/2023 12:24

Maybe applying cold on a small area to test first, and see if it helps? 15 minutes on I read. I have broke that rule because cold packs made the itching bearable.

Bookworm20 · 31/05/2023 15:33

It looks like hives. And they itch like crazy. Try Antihistamines as they work a little bit but probably only for a short term relief of a few hours, Also if one type of antihistimine isn't working try a different one as some only respond to one type (can't remember the names but theres lortazine or something and then ones like citric hydro something or other)

Drink lots and lots of water as apparantly histamine leaves the body quickest through urine than anything else.

Cold flannels wet with cold water and put in freezer for a few minutes over the rash helps drastically. hives also often presents as itchy bottoms of the feet and palms of the hand (with no rash there) so if thats happening its very likely to be hives. Can last a few days or can last months unfortunately.
Also cream with menthol in can help soothe with the itching.

Avoid foods high in histamine whilst it settles down also.

Bookworm20 · 31/05/2023 15:41

Also, depending on her age she may be able to take more than one of the one a day anti histamines. But check with doctor first. my daughter had this, looked the same, it was hives and she was told she can take upto 3 a day when it got really bad and to mix the 2 different types. It seemed to work. she had it for 8 months and we couldn't figure what was causing it to flare up almost every day and then one day it just went away.

It might be something she ate as opposed to something at the park? Did she eat ice cream or anything different there or alot of something she would normally only have a little of? Apparantly some E numbers can cause it to flare up, but no idea how true that is.

Shoemadlady · 31/05/2023 20:16

That looks like hives. Have you tried her with some antihistamine?

INeedAnotherName · 31/05/2023 20:53

I found fexofenadine to be better at calming down skin rashes (sold as Allevia) but i don't know how old your child is.

Was she rolling around on the ground at any point?

Banana1979 · 31/05/2023 21:23

Thank you so much for your messages. I am at my wits end , rash has become much worse and has now spread all over her face, she’s crying and uncomfortable
ive put her in a bath with some oats , spent a fortune on Eurax oilatum calamine lotion ect none of it seems to take away the itch
the cold flannel is a good suggestion I will try this and take her to the doctor in the morning if it persists as the steroids and piriton have done nothing !

My son had scalded skin syndrome when he was a baby and it looked a lot like this. Does your DD have a temperature?

Boopeedoop · 31/05/2023 21:36

If it's gone to her face, take her to a and e incase her lips and tongue start to swell.

Boomshock · 01/06/2023 04:56

Could it have been suncream?
My daughter had a reaction to suncream a few years ago and it was a strange rash, it kept coming and going, I think it got worse with heat.
