Why do many of most men like watching sport for hours?

Successgirl2022 · 26/02/2023 12:31

I know many women like watching different kinds of sports too.

I watch it occasionally but I am definitely not addicted as I have my other more important things to do.

I make sure I keep fit and exercise regularly instead of just passively watching it like my DH.

Before we met 18 years ago (married for 17 years) and for 1 year after that, my DH went to the gym 1-2 times a week while working full time. He was 37 then, and I was 25.

Has anyone else had this happen DH stopped going to the gym (if he went previously) after you had a child/children.

We go for walks, and he does gardening, cleans & polishes his (some sports) car(s). That's his exercise:).

Fair enough:)

I avoid men who watch lots and lots of sport tbh. They're mainly boring fuckers, and the tribalism that often goes with it is off-putting. The odd match or event, fine, but I can't be doing with men who organise their lives around watching sport or a specific team etc.

Is it any different to women who spend hours watching Love Island, Ru Paul, Real Housewives, SATC etc.....

LubaLuca · 26/02/2023 21:43

Mate, I can't tell you how many hours of snooker I've watched in the past couple of weeks. Some live, mostly televised. I don't care if someone else in my house thinks it's boring, I enjoy it.

I never wanted to be a pro - I've never even played, I'm far too short.
I'm not imagining myself up there lifting a trophy surrounded by adoring fans.
I'm not using it as an excuse to get out of housework.

Shut up and go to the gym, you're boring.

Floralnomad · 26/02/2023 21:49

My husband only watches sport when I’ve put it on the TV and he happens to be in the room , on the other hand I watch hours of sport mainly cricket .

Fair enough. I just find this thread a bit odd to single out men and sports given that sitting infront of the TV watching any old shite (men and women) is pretty much a national pastime. Apparently the average is 5 hours a day. If the men are predominantly watching sports women are predominantly watching reality TV and soaps, not sure which time sink carries greater merit?

LookingOldTheseDays · 26/02/2023 22:32

This may well be true, but there are also lots of people who prefer to do things with their time (and those people also tend to hang around with others like them).

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching the odd film, sports event, or series, but organising my life around it? Watching hours and hours of it in one go? Spending most of my leisure time doing that? That's not me, and I wouldn't have chosen DH if that was what he was into either.

LookingOldTheseDays · 26/02/2023 22:32

I'm actually shocked by this. Clearly the people I know are not representative!

I watch a lot of sport. I have a football season ticket, in addition to which I watch cricket, rugby, F1 and the major championships in golf, tennis & athletics.
Why do I watch sport? I love watching the extraordinary skills of people doing things I could never hope to do. Messi scoring a magic goal. Jimmy Anderson hitting the edge with a perfect outswinger. Federer’s forehand down the line. Lewis Hamilton producing a millimetre perfect qualifying lap. I also love the unscripted drama. No Hollywood movie or big budget Netflix drama could ever compete with the 2019 cricket World Cup final.
This does take up a fair amount of my time, but there are lots of things that most people spend hours watching which I never watch. Soaps. Reality shows. Game shows. Costume dramas. Anything with the word ‘celebrity’ in the title.

Agree with that.

The drama of the World Cup just before Christmas was unreal. No TV show could compete with that final.

I’ve said previously that Lionel Messi is the greatest sportsperson ever, and not just because he’s a genius, but also because he has entertained more people than anyone previously (Muhammad Ali and Pele the only two who come close). It wouldn’t be a stretch to say Messi is arguably also the greatest entertainer ever (in any field) given it’s been two decades of relentless brilliance on a weekly basis in front of packed stadiums and an international television audience.

DH and I have watched all the rugby this weekend, a football match and would have watched the cricket if it wasn't in New Zealand as we just can't keep up. We go to almost every match at Lord's as we have sort-of season tickets. I like a bit of golf and many other sports if I come across them. I had a football season ticket before I met DH. He did too and we got an extra season ticket for each other's clubs. Then we had children...

LizzieSiddal · 26/02/2023 23:04

@BananaSpanner Get away with”???

You clearly didn’t read my post properly. I was talking about men who leave there partners with their Dc every weekend so they can go and watch or play sports.

JimnJoyce · 26/02/2023 23:12

i only ever had one DP that loved sport and I got into
it too back in the mid 90's.
Im now a huge motorsport fan and so excited the F1 season is starting.

Honoraryuce · 27/02/2023 09:17

My DH will pretty much just watch the football a couple of times a week. I'll usually put sport on above anything else on tv. I'll watch pretty much anything except cricket or rugby.
We both try and spend an hour a day in gym. I think staying fit is mentally and physically important so I would be disappointed in my DH if he decided not to exercise at all but if he wanted to do another activity that would be different. Having kids has not reduced the amount of time we spend in gym, we just need to coordinate better and be a bit flexible about the time of day.

Any Newcastle opinions on this thread? What do real men think? 👕👖👟🚶‍♂️🧢

(Joking😋😉)

Presumably he found going to the gym BORING! You sound like you find yiyr husband boring.

cos guess what, not everyone finds the sage things enjoyable.

I speak as a woman who could watch sport for hours!

Gwenhwyfar · 27/02/2023 19:14

I watch Eastenders, but I'm not having an affair with my brother in law. People have interests and a lot of men like sports. I'm surprised this is news to you, but then I grew up having to be quiet whenever the football results were read out on Saturday afternoons...

At the beginning of our dating and married life, my DH showed nearly the same interest in fitness as me and it looks like he was PRETENDING he was into it too and that it was our common interest.

I like FIT men!

My Dh likes me traying fit and in good shape but STOPPED caring much about his body.

His weight is ok but not toned up as he could be and was pretending to be to impress and attract me.

Before we got married he knew what body type of a man I prefer and what body type excites me.

I a staying in shape for myself and for my good physical and mental health first of all as well as he likes it too. He has partly lost the shape he had due to his lazy choice not to keep fit.

I never do.

I use my time wisely doing important useful things.

AlmostaMamma · 27/02/2023 21:06

If you would like your DH to take better care of himself or have concerns about his level of physical fitness, then talk to him about that.

It’s also an entirely different issue to his watching sports. Watching sports and working out are not mutually exclusive activities.

Yes, but you don't watch Eastenders for hours, do you?

It's ok to watch something on the weekend for 2-3 hours and to have a break, then do something useful.

The whole point is about watching 2-3 matches with all the analysis before and after say for 5-6 hours is just CRAZY and such a waste of family time.

I am not talking about men who are single. In this case, it's whatever.

Instead of watching it for hours, isn't it better for everyone's health to watch it in moderation and DO some fitness yourself?

Our sport watching didn't change much after having DC as we didn't watch much before children, but our respective exercise time decreased because obviously we need to have someone home with DC so can't both go out doing our own thing on an evening like we used to.

Switchwitch · 27/02/2023 21:10

If you watch sky sports news you'll notice a ticker along the bottom that gently introduced scores/news, slightly above that are scores that flip around, then on the right there is usually a graphic or a table that swirls around every 10 seconds and there's the clock and other messages that flip around. Then you have the full monotone drawl of a middle aged male pundit droning on about a game they can't show you . The whole thing is like a baby's mobile, placating the brain.
