Ungrateful hubby

Please tell me if I'm being unreasonable here . Yesterday I spent a couple of hours cooking and made 3 cottage pies and cooked a large beef joint to make Sunday lunches . I've plated 7 dinners up with all the veg just need to add mash and gravy. They will all go into the freezer for weekend and next week . Today hubby has been moaning saying he prefers the dinners fresh and doesn't know why I do this . I'm ready to smash the dinners over his head as I think this is so bloody ungrateful . He of course disagrees . AIBU to feel angry

So does that mean you put each plate in the microwave on the day? Grim

AlexaWhatsMyName · 07/10/2022 15:42

He may well be ungrateful and should probably do it himself if he wants a freshly cooked roast, but....

He's been eating reheated Sunday lunches for ages without complaint- Ouch! That's taking one for the team

Maybe you should extend a little gratitude his way 🙂

feelingprettylight · 07/10/2022 15:43

Are there actual plates in general freezer then? How many playmates do you have for the rest of the week in cuclation? This is so odd. And microwaved beef for a roast - I guess well done is the preference in your household?

Thats a bit personal, we are talking about roast dinner not playmates Grin

theemmadilemma · 07/10/2022 15:57

Yeah, roast beef would not be something I'd freeze and reheat to serve as a 'roast' meat. It'd go in a pie or casserole after freezing.

But he's got no remit for moaning unless he's willing to take turns to cook.

Well thanks for the comments people it seems I'm in the minority on this one then . I'll make sure I do all fresh food from now on for my hubby 😘 oops sorry husband 😂

Alternatively eat all the frozen dinners yourself and leave him to make his own dinner

ZeroFuchsGiven · 07/10/2022 16:04

Can I ask you op, why do you do this?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 07/10/2022 16:05

That wasnt being sarcastic, I'm genuinly curious

OrangeTrifle · 07/10/2022 16:05

"Hubby" makes me want to vomit more than a frozen dinner.

Can I ask you op, why do you do this?

I’m genuinely curious too. The op is retired, her husband works. From what I can see it seems to be just a preference, but I think even just a sandwich for Sunday lunch would be better than reheated frozen beef and veg if she doesn’t fancy cooking on the weekend,or during the week.

some foods lend themselves well to freezing and reheating like the cottage pie, or lasagne etc, it’s the moisture content, but freezing plates of veg and meat and microwaving isn’t going to be very nice. To say the least.

do you freeze rhe mash too op?

OurChristmasMiracle · 07/10/2022 16:24

You should have responded with “that’s okay I made them for myself not you, especially as you prefer then fresh I assumed you would be cooking your own”

Unicorn2022 · 07/10/2022 16:26

Like everyone else I'm trying to imagine how you are storing the plated dinners in the freezer and why you wouldn't at least do the vegetables fresh on the day as they take minutes. I do batch cook some things including some elements of a roast dinner but wouldn't freeze the whole thing, and I wouldn't be grateful if I was served it either.

fourquenelles · 07/10/2022 16:37

After I have cooked a roast I will plate up put into a small tupperware a complete dinner for later in the week and freeze it. By complete I mean gravy, mash, meat, veggies and yorkie. It freezes well apart from the yorkie but I quite like a flabby yorkshire and it's great to remember that I have it when I don't feel like cooking.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2022 16:43

I wouldn't eat frozen plated roast. But I also wouldn't complain if someone was cooking for me. And if I was you I certainly would t apologise.

The rule is if you complain, you volunteer.

freezing left overs is different though you still eat the majority fresh. In this nothing gets eaten fresh it’s cooked and frozen to be microwaved later.

XmasElf10 · 07/10/2022 16:54

I’d agree with your husband but certainly would never be rude enough to say so. He can complain when he is doing at least his share of cooking and cleaning up!

Op has not said her husband doesnt cook or clean up!

SnarkyBag · 07/10/2022 17:02

I love a batch cook and think there’s loads of meals that freeze and reheat well but a frozen roast? No thanks!

Aprilx · 07/10/2022 17:08

jessielou1 · 07/10/2022 14:01

I'm really shocked how many people are disliking freezing a Sunday lunch . How is it any different to freezing a cottage pie meat veg potato 🤷🏽‍♀️.

I have never heard of anyone freezing a roast dinner and especially after plating it up! It sounds revolting.

pictish · 07/10/2022 17:12

Don’t like the idea of a roast dinner reheated from frozen. Cottage pie, yes of course. A roast is an of the moment meal…it’s all about the textures, the crispness, the sizzling of the meat and the smell of it all cooking and coming together as well as the actual sustenance. There certain meals that should be served freshly cook and in my opinion a roast is one of them.
I’m sure it’s fine out of the freezer but why go to the bother of doing a roast to freeze it? You should eat it!

ThatsTheWayIHikeIt · 07/10/2022 17:28

A complete roast dinner? Including frozen mash and gravy? Sorry but that sounds really unappealing. Cooked veg doesn't really freeze well and neither does cooked meat. It seems such a waste of good ingredients. Do you enjoy these meals yourself?

bingbummy · 07/10/2022 17:48

I really dislike eating heated up food. If it's been frozen the ice never really goes, and it makes the dish soggy. I like fresh meals, so I cook them every day because that's part of my role as the stay at home parent.

Darbs76 · 07/10/2022 19:51

roast dinners can be frozen of course as they do frozen ready meals in supermarkets etc. I’ve never do a frozen roast but I have frozen cottage pie, lasagna, bolognaise, chilli etc. I agree in getting hubby to help with cooking though, don’t just make him fresh because others here think frozen is grim.

Longlurker1 · 07/10/2022 21:01

I told the wife I didn't like her salmon dish EVERY week. It was like I'd killed her first born. Be very careful criticising a loved ones cooking...

"I've martyred myself doing something my husband dislikes and now I'm annoyed he's not grateful."

Batch cooking things like soup, chilli or bolognese makes total sense, freezing a plated roast dinner is weird.

This.

I’d be spectacularly annoyed if I was expected to be grateful for something that I found so unpalatable and I’d (presumably) never asked them to do.
