Mother in law buying me thongs!?!

lovenotwar149 · 22/09/2022 13:10

A long time ago my mother -in -law bought me sexy thongs twice on 2 separate occasions for a xmas present and for a birthday present. I have been on a real self reflective/self realisation/spiritual journey of late and this issue keeps coming up for me. I think this is not ok for her to buy me sexy underwear. What do others think please?

My MiL did this for me 3 Christmases ago. I felt mortified opening them in front of my FiL and extended family. Also I can't stand thongs in general so they were never a wanted gift, even if they'd come from DH 😅 I feel your pain OP.

sleepygal · 22/09/2022 13:39

I once observed a 40 something divorced women open a Xmas present from her elderly step grand father, it was some quite sexy nightwear.
Very awkward 🙄

diddl · 22/09/2022 13:39

Had your husband asked her to buy you some?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/09/2022 13:40

Next time she wants to visit tell her sadly dh is on a promise thanks to the thongs and see her another time!!

That's why she's doing it, especially if she's possessive of her DS. In her eyes, it's a way to 'encourage' you to 'look after' her precious boy by 'providing his needs'. She'll probably think she's been successful in her mission if you tell her that, and not mind at all!

TitInATrance · 22/09/2022 13:42

I’d think she was regifting them.

Deathlok · 22/09/2022 13:43

Your mother in law brought you tongs along time ago? Really? Next?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/09/2022 13:44

Had your husband asked her to buy you some?

He can't really be the thinking type if he did. Maybe if he asked her to buy them for him to give you, but not to give you herself!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/09/2022 13:47

See, that would be a nice, normal, thoughtful present for a MIL to give - a lovely set of wooden John Lewis or Lakeland salad tongs would be appreciated by most people. Sexy pants, not so much....

Is she perhaps just naïve?

Many Christmases ago, when my siblings and I were teenagers, we had one of those incidents that has become the stuff of family legend. We were having Xmas dinner and exchanging presents with my grandparents. My mum opened up her present from my dad's mum and the room fell into a hushed silence, broken intermittently with stifled giggles. The present my gran had bought mum? A non-doctor vibrator! In those days, vibrators were often sold in the back pages of magazines, euphemistically described as "personal massagers". My gran, in her naivety, had taken it at face value and decided one would be the ideal present for my mum who had been suffering from a sore back for the past few months. All attempts at stifling our giggles ended when my gran announced - "if you have trouble reaching, I'm sure (my dad) wouldn't mind giving you a hand".

muchprefersummer · 22/09/2022 13:58

Never ever have I seen sexy thongs being sold in packs of 3. Bet they were just normal cotton thongs that you'd get from M&S. I can't say I'd want my MIL to buy me pants but I certainly couldn't get worked up about it if she did.
I hate the fact that on mumsnet a bloody MIL can't do right for wrong. You'd be moaning if she hadn't got you anything.
And I highly doubt she was trying to get into your knickers as you've suggested.

stickynoter · 22/09/2022 14:07

I wouldn't class a multipack of thongs as particularly sexy. Might be to you if you're not usually a thing wearer but she might think this is what you'd wear day to day - some do.

Therefore I'd take the sexual angle out of it and just see it as her buying you a multipack of pants. Still a bit weird IMO but not really that disgusting. Plenty of men get socks and boxers as presents

it feels dirty to me with these new eyes I now have on me

??

picklemewalnuts · 22/09/2022 14:16

Some people see 'nice underwear' and a luxury gift. And thongs as 'what youngsters wear these days'.

I had an aunt who always sent us pants for Christmas and birthdays. Frumpy ones. I can clearly visualise one pair in particular. Most disappointing for a 7 yr old.

That reminds me of something I read on here a while ago, about a father of the groom giving his speech and expressing his gratitude to the mother of the bride, to whom he referred as a 'MILF'! He'd heard the phrase and understood it as a compliment to pay an attractive, confident older lady, with no idea whatsoever that it might be an acronym for something a little less family-friendly Grin

Dweetfidilove · 22/09/2022 14:41

She either doesn't consider multipack panties sexy, or there's a hint there.
Could there have been 'conversations' with her possession son, which led her to believe this is even slightly wise?

lovenotwar149 · 22/09/2022 14:49

Oh thanks again guys for your replies! such a variety too! I'm laughing a lot...so thanks for that too!
I guess they were 'sexy' to me! Yh maybe it was a hint! Interesting though that I mother in law is sooo far away from wearing a thong...the evidence is her very wide and big underpants on her washing line!
I'd say I am a 5 to 6 out of 10 as far as dressing sexy goes...no higher! I'm happy with that and I don't wear thongs anymore at all!
Re webuiltthisbuffetonsausageroll....looking after her sons precious needs...oh yh she was def into that! Her precious son indeed!! he's the youngest...her baby as she would refer to him! And he is quite babyish in many ways! He's lived up to the label she gave him!! But I do love him.

Bringing it up now after all that time has passed will definitely make you appear stable. Go for it

declutteringmymind · 22/09/2022 15:48

I love how she's buying you a present that's intended to please her son! Just pass it over to DH and say I think these were for you.

Gentleman1 · 22/09/2022 15:51

Possibly your DH said something to her or she may have seen pics of you in a thong swim suit or can see them via your tights? Just ideas but strange, lol.

wackamole · 22/09/2022 16:06

If I wanted to give someone sexy underwear I'd pick out individual pieces. You can't see what the items in a three-pack look like properly. I recently bought a multipack of cotton hipsters (lost luggage delayed for days and I only had one spare pair in my carry-on), in another country so unfamiliar brands, and was surprised by how different the pic on the packaging was vs the actual items. Although in that case they were considerably LESS sexy than advertised, given that they contained similar amounts of material to Bridget Jones's granny pants.

IsThePopeCatholic · 22/09/2022 16:20

Gross! It smacks a bit of the Oedipus complex - or maybe she’s just a bit tacky!

RunLolaRun101 · 22/09/2022 13:25

Giving an in-law a multipack of underwear for Christmas is fine. I went to Victoria Secret for my neice because she loves the brand (she’s 11) - their shop assistant directed me to thongs ‘because that’s what all youngsters want to wear’) - luckily for me I know what she like. But if your Mum doesn’t know you like it’d be quite normal.

You have an 11 year old niece who loves Victoria Secret?
And the shop assistant recommended thongs for an 11 year old? 😳

ThreeLocusts · 22/09/2022 16:36

OP just to say that I find it weird, inappropriate and - coming from a possessive mum - interfering, but in a way that is easily laughed off. I'm laughing reading the thread....

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/09/2022 17:03

I can believe that, sadly. I don't know if the craze still exists, but there was a time a while back when Playboy-branded stuff was all the rage amongst young-ish kids. Granted not the actual magazines, but stationery and bags - plenty to 'endorse' and legitimise the brand to youngsters. But then, Little Mix and others sing about themes that (imho) are totally unsuited to their target audience; others may disagree, though.
