Strange chat about men who work on oil rigs

draycentral · 12/05/2022 11:00

So, I've either been living under a rock or my friend is full of crap.
My partner works on oil rigs ... home every few months for a few months.
I saw that he had liked sexy pics of a woman he didn't know on ig. Pulled him up on it and that was the end of that as far as I was concerned.
My friend however announced this morning that riggers are notorious for online affairs/ interactions and general Inappropriate on line behaviour with women..
Utter tosh or am I blinded?

To my understanding liking/following ’sexy pics’ is pretty damn common.

And yes, oil rig men are known for cheating and being very misogynystic.

draycentral · 12/05/2022 11:12

That's depressing.

Also a lot of cocaine taking when back on shore seems popular with the guys who are single. Think it's a bit of a 'party hard/money to burn' mentality?

draycentral · 12/05/2022 11:16

When hime he doesn't go crazy. Likes a beer and catch ups with friends but otherwise it's just us mostly

That's depressing.

Yes it is.

wait ’till you learn about porn and everything that goes with it.

BlossomWind · 12/05/2022 11:26

This is an interesting book about the oil rig culture:

I don’t know about North Sea rigs, but I was on a rig elsewhere in the world about 15 years ago, and there were two “lounge” areas - one that had quite hard porn showing on loop, and one that only had “soft” porn showing on loop. I don’t imagine it’s quite like that now, and I don’t think it would have been exactly like that in the North Sea but just sharing my direct experiences…! It was an interesting fortnight.

QuebecBagnet · 12/05/2022 12:17

Dh worked on rigs for years. He’s never taken cocaine, doesn’t even drink and I’m 99% sure he hasn’t cheated. He’s no misogynist either.

Livpool · 12/05/2022 12:22

My ex was a rigger and I am afraid he was a cheating arsehole

My dds dad also works on the rigs. The most straight laced man I've ever met in my life.

MermaidEyes · 12/05/2022 12:28

Wasn't there a similar thread on here recently from an oil rig workers wife, and several Scottish posters came on to say when they come ashore they're well known for messaging local women to hook up and hang out with, despite half of them being married?

IShaggedSomeMingers · 12/05/2022 12:28

I know an oil rigger and even I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole

LadyDanburysHat · 12/05/2022 12:31

I know a woman locally married to a rigger. It's well known that he cheats on her. And she puts up with it because she doesn't have to work and lives in a big house.

waterlego · 12/05/2022 12:35

One of my relatives is a rigger and he has a very ‘colourful’ relationship history, including lots of infidelity and relationships/flings with women much younger than him. I don’t know if he would touch drugs but he likes drinking rather a lot.

As with everything though, I’m sure there are some exceptions. I’m also related to a couple of naval chaps who, although they are good fun at parties and love a heavy drinking session, seem to be very in love with and loyal to their wives. Of course I can’t know what they get up to when they’re away but I’d be gobsmacked if either of them were unfaithful to their wives.

layladomino · 12/05/2022 12:39

Of course not all riggers are the same. They won't all be cheating. The environment and culture means that mysogenistic attitudes and questionnable behaviour are normalised to an extent, and someone who is a bit like that will be able to go a bit mad. But that doesn't mean it converts all men to that culture.

Horst · 12/05/2022 14:33

I expect a large amount of them are cheating watching much more porn than normal and over indulge in drugs or alcohol.

in a sense not much different to long distance lorry driver.

MaChienEstUnDick · 12/05/2022 14:37

I once got the changeover train down from Aberdeen. Once. I absolutely, 100% changed my diary in order to never, never be stuck in a confined place with a carriage full of riggers again.

Yet my wee cousin is on the rigs and is a total sweetheart. Go figure.

Howmuchwood · 12/05/2022 14:44

North Sea rigs are generally dry so once the workers get shore leave they make up for lost drinking time. My BIL has done a few stints offshore, I don't think they are all cheating and misogynistic alcohokics when onshore, but its definitely part of the stereotype for good reason.

draycentral · 12/05/2022 14:47

I'm shocked by this.

OP posts:
Neu · 12/05/2022 14:49

Not ALL but a high proportion are as your friend describes. My DP works offshore, his friends are a mixture.

nearlyspringyay · 12/05/2022 14:53

Depends on role IME. Out sea decompression diver, probably too worried about staying alive, riggers with internal roles prob v different.

Bit like being in the navy, dry and on it when at sea, go a bit mad when they get off shore.
