How did you meet your partner?

I'm really lonely. I've been single for over three years. I've dated and not met the right person yet. I was in a very abusive relationship before so am being careful, listening to red flags, and looking for someone who I really think I'm compatible with. I am glad I'm at a point in my life where I can do this, but I honestly am close to giving up. One guy seemed great, but then kept turning up at my house randomly when I was working so I called it off due to lack of boundaries. Went on a date with someone who seemed great until he had a drink and kept commenting on my beasts. Went on an date with someone I met online who had clearly used photos from years ago and lied about his age. I have a few more of these!

I also still live with my parents and can't afford to move out, and also have a 3yo, but think I am deserving of love regardless....

I'd really like to hear some positive stories about how you met your other half?

I met mine at work, friends first for about 8 months before anything romantic happened.

Gonnagetgoing · 04/04/2022 18:00

Met him at a meal out organised by a mutual friend of mine who I hadn’t seen for years. He was there with one of his best friends.

Online 23 years ago when it was considered lame and we were laughed at a lot. I don’t know how we would have ever met if it hadn’t been for the Internet chat rooms back then - I’m from Scandinavia! It was an amazing way to meet someone. We fell in love with each other’s personalities before we’d even met in real life!

I don’t think necessarily that living with your parents or having a young child should put a man off as long as you’re upfront about that. When I moved back with my parents for 2-3 years to save for a deposit on a house it didn’t put off men but I told them about it either at the start or after first few dates.

I met my DH in a seedy nightclub Grin we were married for 30 years.

More recently lots of friends seem to have met through exercise. My sister met her DH in a spin class, there have been five weddings recently of people I know through parkrun or running club and I know a couple who met at the gym and another two through a hiking group.

In 2015 I decided that for the duration of the year I would say yes to any and all invitations from friends. I was single but the driver wasn't to meet a romantic partner but was because I am naturally introverted and felt that without pushing myself I was in danger of losing touch with my friends. Anyway, met a 'friend of a friend' at a couple of events I said yes to. We got married in 2020.

I think this is important. Attend things for their own sake, not with the specific aim of meeting a man. Enjoy life, that's very attractive.

social club, then at the bus stop

On a dating website! A very expensive one. He was my first ever online date as it happens. Fell in love the moment we sat down to dinner, and adored each other ever since.

Ps of course you’re deserving of love!

We dated at university but went our separate ways when he graduated. We reconnected last year when we were both single and it went from there.

Online

muckandnettles · 04/04/2022 18:29

Small ad in the local paper - his advert made me laugh. That was in 1986 and we've been together ever since. Still makes me laugh.

user1237 · 04/04/2022 18:46

We met online 15 years ago. It's funny because, at the time, everyone seemed to think that online dating was for desperate folk! Turns out we were just ahead of the game lol

Robin843 · 04/04/2022 18:55

He came into my place of work. I was new there and we got chatting. I asked if he could recommend anywhere for lunch as I didn't know the area (this was a blatant ploy!) and he said, *oh xxxxx is good for lunch." Then, after a brief pause he said "I'll take you there if you like." Bingo! We've been married 35 years.

sellingupslow · 04/04/2022 18:56

We met in Asia whilst I was travelling alone at 18 and him with a friend!

MrsGHarrison87 · 04/04/2022 18:58

Plenty of Fish.

Antarcticant · 04/04/2022 18:58

He was a friend of my sister's and we met when he came to say hello to her in a pub. I'm not very sociable and very nearly didn't go. We've been married 17 years.

Thesefeetaremadeforwalking · 04/04/2022 18:59

First husband at a party.

Second husband at Church.

HerbertChops · 04/04/2022 20:13

Nightclub, on the dance floor. Made plans to meet up a week later in my area and didn't swop numbers. We both turned up! Both of us hadn't intended too, he lived over an hour away. It was obviously meant to be. That was 21 years ago, been married 18 years.

aboutbloodytime123 · 04/04/2022 20:34

Met exH at work and current DP on tinder! We were chalk and cheese and laughed about it but decided we liked each other enough to meet for a drink anyway. 5 years later, we're engaged and have DC. I also have 2 with exH who were small when we met, it is possible, I promise.

LoudParrot · 04/04/2022 20:36

We met at work.

meow1989 · 04/04/2022 20:41

I met dh at one of his gigs when we were teenagers Blush I did know the rest of the band anyway but the two of us had never met before. 16 years later and still going strong Grin
