Hi all,

I've never tried OLD but I'm considering dipping my toe in - what are the apps that you'd recommend for same-sex relationships? Any to avoid?

The answer is going to depend on whether or not you want to exclude people with a female gender but whose body shape/functionality/genetics doesn't match with that. If you are totally happy including these as potential partners then there's loads of options. If not then it's quite tricky and OLD may not be the best tactic.

This basically ^^

@SinoohXaenaHide I'm looking for a same-sex relationship, so I know I would need to tread carefully there.

I really do want to meet someone new and am due to move to a new city and want to make the best of it. I do the usual going out, being sociable etc etc but I'm not having much luck at the moment.

What would you suggest outside of OLD?

MrsRubyMonday · 21/11/2021 08:16

I met my now wife of almost five years on POF

Theunamedcat · 21/11/2021 08:22

Outside of old you just rely on pubs and social events at least that way you get to see them face to face pictures on the Internet are subjective

Darhon · 21/11/2021 08:29

Before this gets too derailed and with very recent experience from the coal front, it’s absolutely fine! Trans identities are very openly declared. Had dates off Her, Tinder and Hinge. Actually Tinder and Hinge were probably worse in terms of matching me with straight men (nothing to do with being transgendered). But I just ignored that and also couples looking for thirds. On Tinder though, do put a rainbow in your profile as it’s not always clear you are seeking women only.

By the way, Her also reverted from womxn to allow users to pick ‘women’.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 21/11/2021 08:33

The Giggle app by Sall Grover is strictly biological women only & I’ve heard includes a lesbian dating section.

SolasAnla · 21/11/2021 08:42

Have you tried meetup to see if there are any groups which would interest you?
You may not meet someone directly but would get a feel of which are the better locations to socialise in

DoneTooMuch · 21/11/2021 08:49

My friend uses pof. She's only interested in same sex (not same gender) relationships and hasn't found it to be an issue so far...

But she also joined a meet up group that's primarily for socialising but she's had some interest from that and they socialise in lesbian bars so get to meet real people out in the wild. I think she'd rather stick with that if she can - she's had some pretty rubbish experiences online!

Chr1stmasCarole · 21/11/2021 08:49

Her and Pink sofa are both quite big lesbian dating sites that I've had good experiences on.
Sapphos singles is a Facebook lesbian dating site that is growing in popularity at the moment.
Good luck.

digitalvertigo · 21/11/2021 10:26

My only experience is on Hinge, but I've been happy with it so far and I think the app itself is quite good (you can put voicenotes/short videos on if you want and the prompt questions to put on your profile are fun)
Hinge's 'brand' is that it's the app for long-term relationships, and it's geared towards getting you off the app and meeting people asap - you can call someone/facetime in the app when you've matched if you wanted to do that and it sometimes asks you if you've met whoever you're chatting to yet.
It does feel like the women on there are on the same page and looking for something more serious, but as I said, I haven't been on another app and I'm new to it all :)

@MrsRubyMonday interesting, I hadn't really considered POF, thanks!

@Theunamedcat and I'm definitely already doing that, but just want to make more of a concerted effort to meet women now, especially as I'll be starting fresh in a new city.

@Darhon I hadn't considered Her either-thanks for this, and good to see that you can filter by 'woman' now.

@SolasAnla @DoneTooMuch I'm definitely looking at MeetUp aswell, I will be joining new hobby groups once I've moved, and have already started socialist in the city I'll be moving to, but I think it would be nice to start actively dating and not leave it to chance.

OP posts:
RaquelGreen · 21/11/2021 10:35

And lesbian bars seem to be becoming increasingly rare!

@digitalvertigo that's a great recommendation thanks, I would really like a relationship so I'll have a look at Hinge. I have heard some OLD horror stories but then I've heard plenty of 'regular' dating horror stories as well!

The other way to weed out transwomen is to set height weight filters. But be aware that most lesbian apps have been colonised.

reasysteady · 21/11/2021 11:06

My lesbian friends still use the apps.
I think it's pretty easy to filter out the trans women, they very often can't 'pass' visually (and very heavy use of filters is a sign of this) and they don't 'pass' when it gets to the messaging, I've seen some very odd messages via my friends.
Trying to guess what a lesbian might say to another in a dating app and failing big time!

But as a straight woman also using the apps, I've had just as many weird messages, it's all in the game y'all

roarfeckingroarr · 21/11/2021 11:32

I wouldn't imagine having trans "women" is too much of a problem - you can always tell so just don't match with them. Part and parcel of OLD is getting dodgy messages from men; even lesbians can't escape that

MuthaFunka61 · 21/11/2021 12:07

Agreed about being able to spot transwomen profiles.

gogohm · 21/11/2021 12:45

The paid for sites are more likely to have genuine people on it as they have paid to be there. The ones I used all had same sex options but I can't comment on how many people are subscribed to that option as I was seeking (and found) a man.

Chr1stmasCarole · 21/11/2021 13:16

I've used a few different sites and have never experienced any problems weeding out people I'm not keen on (for whatever reason) the sex of a person is pretty obvious and if you don't want to be with a certain type of person just don't message them.
