Rude "famous people"

We have a famous designer at my kid's school, born to a very wealthy family. Her kids are nice
She can be very unfriendly but inconsistently so - will often blank people one day and be friendly the next. Acts quite haughtily with the teachers. At times very abrupt.
She doesn't have to be friends with us civilians - that I fully understand. But what's with the rude behaviour? What's going on there? The school mums are a pretty innocuous bunch and I'd like to think we are friendly and welcoming.

Perhaps my cousin experienced her during a difficult or testing time in her life, you never know. During this particular series she was demanding and rather lazy. I'm not saying she's like this all the time. She, IMHO, is equally entertaining and irritating.

Okay maybe not a popular one but I work in the same building as Michael Gove (or did until recently) and he is incredibly polite and mannerly. You know the sort of 'holding the door open stories' that people tell? Well, every time I have ever walked through a door and held it open for the person behind me - who then happened to be Gove - he would genuinely look you in the eye and say 'thank you very much'. No matter how busy or blustering his aides were as they walked through with him.

It really does go a long way.

You can fundamentally disagree with someone's politics / position / outlook on life, but I will always have time for someone with manners.

A friend of mine had to work with him on a social campaign and said he was surprisingly charming and focused. Really seemed to listen and take on board what they were doing. I asked if the campaign got passed though and she became vague. He had to become busy with other things. Of course he had.
tedsletterofthelaw · 10/10/2021 12:26

Not met anyone horrible thankfully.

Just want to echo PPs about Victoria Beckham. She is lovely. We were in a restaurant and her and David were on the table next to us. They were constantly being harassed for autographs etc. It was pretty distracting being sat next to them. They were very polite to everyone though. Anyway, as they were leaving they apologised to us for the disruption, ordered us a round of drinks and offered us their autographs.

Lovely couple.

@saraclara

I have autism and don't agree. You learn how to act and what to say. It's false, but it's an effort to be polite. Please don't cut me any slack.

Some autistic people can. Others can't. Given that everyone is constantly told that no two autistic people are the same, it's odd that you are claiming that we should see every autistic person as belong capable of the same masking behaviour that you are.

I don't see learning social cues as masking. I don't mask anything, and haven't since I was about 25. Being autistic is not an excuse for not learning social niceties. It just took me most of my life. Chris Packham is certainly old enough to have learnt how to behave. I suspect that no one ever told him he had to. Autism is a reason, not an excuse.
PandorasMailbox · 10/10/2021 12:30

A nice one..

My youngest daughter works as an extra and said that Bill Nighy was lovely to her, asking if she was okay and how she was enjoying her role.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 10/10/2021 12:30

Very famous TV chef had a son at my DC's school and he was awful, so egocentric and treated his kids like shit. Used to play the theme song for his show out the windows of his car at pick up.

Beahappy2a · 10/10/2021 12:31

If it is Stella McCartney, I’ve worked with her a number of times, absolutely lovely but she is shy… I’m sure that this is the reason

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 10/10/2021 12:32

On the other hand, Jeremy Corbyn was absolutely lovely, my friend's team met him during a campaign and he was fantastic with them, so interested in what they had to say and their perspectives in stuff. Bought them all chocolate bars from the corner shop after!

yourestandingonmyneck · 10/10/2021 12:33

Having worked in TV for years I can assure you that Kirsty is what we call great talent, she has massive screen presence. I know a lot of people love to hate on successful people and persuade themselves that they're no good at anything but the truth is that the big names have fame for a reason, they are very good at what they do.

@50ShadesOfCatholic - oh god, if Kirsty Allsop is considered the epitome of "great talent" I despair of modern television 😂

The general consensus anytime I've heard her name come up is "gobshite". As I said though, very watchable, and amazing confidence.

leavesthataregreen · 10/10/2021 12:35

@Gothichouse40

The actor Bill Murray is lovely as is Joan Collins. I've heard nice things about them both. I have not met anyone famous.
I've met Joan Collins. She is stunning. I was put next to her at a dinner, and couldn't take my eyes off her gorgeous skin - this was only a couple of years ago. She was also hilarious and scurrilous. I really admired her. A proper trooper.
Jaysmith71 · 10/10/2021 12:41

Stella and Mary McCartney were notoriously sent to the local comp in Sussex and were ribbed and perhaps bullied. Dad thought it was character-forming and would keep them grounded and toughen them up.

Stella and Mary send their kids to posh school.

Shallwegoforawalk · 10/10/2021 12:43

Gordon Ramsey - funny, warm and had time for everyone. Very professional when working, didn't waste anyone's time and knew everything about the production. Went up in my estimation!

Christian Slater - so handsome (of course!) but also charming, unassuming, chatty with everyone. Just a joy to work with.

They are my two faves.

Worst - Gabby Logan. Total "don't you know who I am" beeatch, couldn't stand her. Totally up herself. So weird cos Kenny her husband is absolutely lovely, don't know how he stands for her behaviour!

KilledByWitches · 10/10/2021 12:47

I spent a lovely afternoon at soft play with Nick Pickard from Hollyoaks once. DD was playing with the child he had with him. I'd assumed, because I'm awful with faces, that I'd known him from school. He was on the next table, turned his chair and we chatted for ages about nothing in particular. Only when my friend turned up and whispered 'Why are you sat with Tony from Hollyoaks?" Did the penny drop.

I've met most of the Star Wars casts over the years through charity events. Carrie Fisher was just as you'd expect her to be, absolutely lovely. She could make you feel like you were the most important person in the room. I genuinely shed a tear when she died. She was a beautiful woman inside and out.
Dave Prowse had a bit of a reputation, but I always loved him, he was always nice and always remembered my name every time I saw him.

I'm still in touch with some of the cast members now and they never take for granted the fans as they are the people who have elevated them.

A very famous 80’s gameshow host ( known by the staff for being rude to staff ) came into the post office l worked in and was handed some stamps ( yes ..before printed stickers ) to put on his item . He looked shocked and said “do you expect me to put these on myself ! “ …to which my colleague answered “ no you need to put them on the parcel “ 😆 He complained .

Totally agree with this.

She comes across as very natural/at ease and has a very clever sense of humor.

Personally I don't think any UK female TV presenter can top her.

GatoradeMeBitch · 10/10/2021 12:57

Holy crap! If you were a celeb you would definitely warrant a mention

I've thought that about a few people on this thread. "I thought this woman was rude so I yelled "rude" at her!" was another.

In response to the Michael Macintyre negative comments, the painter and decorator who did my house also did his and said he was lovely. They were there for a few weeks and said he was really chatty and down to earth, and when they were on a break eating their sandwiches he’d sometimes try out new material on them to see if they’d find it funny!

All of these encounters are just snapshots of single moments, though, and can’t be used to construct a whole narrative about a person. I totally agree with all the PPs saying that slebs can’t be expected to be ‘on’ and flawlessly gracious and lovely every second of the day - they’re just people, and it must be bloody exhausting to be approached continually and judged for every interaction. Where there’s almost unanimous consistency, whether positive or negative, it’s probably a genuine picture but otherwise it’s just stupid gossip.

And I’m definitely not having the Marcus Rashford knocking - I don’t really care if he’s a bit of a mardy arse sometimes; he’s just a young working class kid who’s been thrust into fame and money and is using it to do a lot of good, unlike many others in the same position, so he deserves a free pass quite honestly.

suckingonchillidogs · 10/10/2021 12:59

@MrsLighthouse "no, you need to put them on the parcel", brilliant! Why can I never be that quick 😆

TheUndeadLovelinessOfDemons · 10/10/2021 12:59

@littlepinkwinky

I met a tiny actor who played a very famous robot, and I said "ooh, hello, you probably don't remember, but my husband used to modify your cars for you" and he pulled a face, shrugged his shoulders and turned away.

Rude little twat.

Kenny Baker?

DB was lovely to me. I went to a concert and he was sitting in front of me (I'm very short) in was in the front row and I was in the second, and he turned around and offered to slump down in his seat for me........

Didn't like Tony Blair -very sweaty hands. Bill Clinton gleamed though like a movie star and a person serving drinks must of been nervous of serving him and tripped and he checked to see she was ok and smiled and said 'There but for the grace of god go I, it happens to all of us'

A member of the royal family a bit strange as was Chris Eubank -not impolite -just not on the same wavelength

sunshinesupermum · 10/10/2021 13:00

Sarah Beany was delightful when I interviewed her some years ago.

sharpenyourknives · 10/10/2021 13:01

Claudia Winkelman almost pushed me over trying to get to the front of the queue to be seated at the Ivy Cafe in St John's Wood. No apology.

TerribleZebra · 10/10/2021 13:01

I'm friends with Chris Packham and he is absolutely lovely. Don't recognise the comments people are making about him on here. He is so patient with people constantly coming up to him. He's very driven but I have never seen him be rude to anyone.

Soggychip · 10/10/2021 13:08

DB had a summer job as a stage hand (in the late 70s) at Wyndhams Theatre. Bill Nighy was in a production there at the time. It was long before he had been discovered. He often used to have a pint and a chat with DB. DB said he was a really great chap. Friendly, funny, kind and unassuming, DB was really glad when he hit the big time.
