Rude "famous people"

We have a famous designer at my kid's school, born to a very wealthy family. Her kids are nice
She can be very unfriendly but inconsistently so - will often blank people one day and be friendly the next. Acts quite haughtily with the teachers. At times very abrupt.
She doesn't have to be friends with us civilians - that I fully understand. But what's with the rude behaviour? What's going on there? The school mums are a pretty innocuous bunch and I'd like to think we are friendly and welcoming.

@Pantaloony

A friend met Michael McIntyre who turned out to be right up his own arse. She was gutted as she loves his shows and he comes across as so nice but he was so rude and stuck up. She said he was a celebrity she wished she never met in real life.
My daughter had a friend whose mother worked with him and described him as smug.

Apparently, he's one of these "Do you know who I am?" types.

She couldn't stand him.

@SingaporeSling01

We have a VERY famous TV / actor dad at my children’s school. Sunglasses on whatever the weather.
I wear my sunglasses all of the time when out because I have very sensitive eyes.
TatianaBis · 10/10/2021 11:54

Me too. They’re prescription as well.

DrSbaitso · 10/10/2021 11:55

Roald Dahl is known to have been an arsehole and anti Semite. And apparently snippy about being a children's author, which is odd.

Wonderful books though, and with plenty of female protagonists and well-written female characters. I maintain that Matilda is a feminist novel.
@sqirrelfriends who’s Jo from Steps?
I’m guessing they mean jo o’meara from SClub. She who was horrid on CBB once.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/10/2021 11:57

Spot on, folks, with the Irish singer.

Cliff Richard is absolutely horrible.

Don't imagine that will be news to anyone though!

I once met him in his dressing room (that's not as dodgy as it may sound - my Dad was with me and it was kind of business-related) and he seemed nice enough; but he has had 'links' with certain people and circumstances that leave me a bit Hmm

I once met Feargal Sharkey backstage (also as a child - me, not him). I had a big bag of sweets and he asked if he could have one, to which I gladly obliged - very kindly, friendly man.

I never get the 'Don't you know who I am?' line, though - it's the celeb equivalent of the MN standard 'Did you mean to be so rude?' and just invites people to give you your come-uppance. Surely, the fact that they have to ask is proof positive that they aren't quite as universally famous as they assumed. I doubt the Queen has ever had to use that line!

It's interesting how some of the absolute megastars - like Paul McCartney - are the unassuming ones who will introduce themselves without expecting everybody to already know and who won't try to belittle ordinary people; maybe they know they have nothing to prove and have complete confidence in who they are and their place in the world, without having to stomp on the heads of everyday folk to seek validation and self-importance?

Personally, I wouldn't take any offence at all to a celebrity wanting to stay out of the limelight, wear dark glasses, just be left alone in peace with their family etc. The ones that stand out are those who are actively vile - screaming at people before anybody has said anything to them at all - or when the screamee is serving them as part of their job.

@Evilcountspatula

Is it Alex Polizzi??
She’s my secret girl crush so no, it’s definitely not her.
jollygoose · 10/10/2021 12:00

Having lunch in Cyprus one day I thought I recognised a guy who was part of a young couple. I thought he might have been an electrician who had come to our house in the past, I went over and said excuse me are you and electrician? He laughed and said actually I probably know him from Emmadale he was there with Victoria from the show and I think as he hadn`t been in the show long he was delighted to be recognised.

FatJan · 10/10/2021 12:01

A lot of people saying things like 'X is lovely on TV but is actually horrible in real life based on this one particular interaction I had with them'.

Do you really think that one time you saw them is enough to know what they're 'actually' like?

Just because the cameras aren't rolling you think you're really seeing the 'real' them?

Imagine if someone saw you on a bad day when you didn't fancy making small talk didn't have time to stop for a chat and then went 'Oh HER, she's ACTUALLY really horrible and up herself, wouldn't give me the time of day'.

Maybe you were busy, or tired, or distracted, or sad.

My arse to the lot of you.

Frazzled2207 · 10/10/2021 12:01

@Livebythecoast

Steve Redgrave. I worked in a travel agency in Marlow. 1988 Seoul Olympics we booked the rowing team out there. He was really obnoxious. I was serving a customer and he kept clicking his fingers at me to try and get my attention to leave what I was doing and attend to him. I was only young and didn't really know who he was so I wasn't impressed. If it had been John Taylor from Duran Duran (my crush at the time) it would have been a different story Grin
He is a big hero of mine so this is so disappointing to hear! Mind you it was quite a while ago so hopefully he’s mellowed with age.
FatJan · 10/10/2021 12:02

(apart from those who have made judgements based on more informed/extended experience)

TedImgoingmad · 10/10/2021 12:03

Slightly off topic but I learned yesterday that he is Jenny Packham’s sister.

Are you sure about that grin

Chris Packham and Jenny Packham are indeed siblings, according to the world wide web. You learn something new every day on MN!

TedImgoingmad · 10/10/2021 12:04

Oh god, just realised what you were getting at there...."Jenny Packham's sister !!

Dandy0911 · 10/10/2021 12:04

I love these threads!

I worked at a private airport in my late teens. (27 now so not too long ago)

Kevin Costner - lovely guy, very chilled and happy to chat.
John Travolta - nice guy, sort of kept himself to himself. He's got a pilot license himself and was very interesting.
Simon Cowell was okay too. Pleasant to be around.

I found it was the less famous people from reality telly who were awful. One of the TOWIE cast members was the most vile person, arrogant demanding for the sake of it. Wouldn't even look at you when speaking. Made a fuss of himself.

Lewis Hamilton was pretty full of himself. He had a lovely red plane though and it was always well known when he was due to come in.

A lot of people were just demanding and rude for the sake of it. That job role really made me realise a lot of celebs are so much shorter in real life. Everyone looks so big on telly!

TedImgoingmad · 10/10/2021 12:04

But still, I had no idea they were siblings. Talk about having chalk and cheese lives.

Shallwegoforawalk · 10/10/2021 12:08

@HeyGirlHeyBoy

I don't want to believe re Marcus Rashford Sad What has he supposedly done or said?

It's one comment from an anonymous poster who could easily have a racist/discrediting agenda.

We know the Tory govt use Mumsnet to test opinions so not a stretch to think someone could fancy chucking a bit of shade at someone who humiliated them.

HundredMilesAnHour · 10/10/2021 12:11

I was interviewed by Carol Thatcher and she was lovely, both on and off camera. It was out "in the sticks" but turned out we lived near each other in London - which we discovered when we found out we were also parked next to each other in the car park. I was dying to ask her lots of questions about her mum and growing up but didn't want to pry.

I used to be in the gym with Andy from Erasure as we had the same personal trainer so we'd chat as we crossed over sessions. Nice guy. Same for Vicky Pattison. She was very down to earth (as you'd imagine) and really funny.

Subbaxeo · 10/10/2021 12:12

I met Stuart Goddard (Adam Ant) years ago through work and told him I was a big fan of his as a teenager. I said he hadn’t changed at all and he just said, Yeah, I got a picture in my attic! He was always very polite and low key, lovely to deal with.

darklindor · 10/10/2021 12:13

'Do you know who I am?' is known as doing a Danny in this house, as many years ago we heard Danny La Rue say it on live radio. He was so obnoxious we were roaring with laughter.

Only older MNers might know who I'm talking about.

Anordinarymum · 10/10/2021 12:16

Marcus Rashford is a credit to his mother. I do not believe what has been said about him. He is The Man

50ShadesOfCatholic · 10/10/2021 12:16

@yourestandingonmyneck

Puffalicious Someone mentioned Kirsty Allsop: my cousin is a TV producer and worked with her for a full series. She is, indeed, petty, full of herself, demanding, superior, rude and pretty crap at her job. Bag her all you like but Kirsty Allsop is brilliant at her job. There's a reason why she's a constant presence on TV.

@50ShadesOfCatholic I'm not sure I'd agree with that. I wouldn't say Kirsty is on tv because she has any talent or skill or is good at her job. I would say she is tv because she is very watchable, but not necessarily in a good way. I think she has an immense level of self-confidence and is very ballsy, even when she's got completely the wrong end of the stick, and I think a lot of people find that very interesting to watch because most people aren't like that.

Having worked in TV for years I can assure you that Kirsty is what we call great talent, she has massive screen presence. I know a lot of people love to hate on successful people and persuade themselves that they're no good at anything but the truth is that the big names have fame for a reason, they are very good at what they do.
TheUndeadLovelinessOfDemons · 10/10/2021 12:21

@Thulian

I tripped on a step in a bar and was caught by Archbishop Rowan Williams. He was lovely. But a crap archbishop, unfortunately.

I always think he seems like a lovely kind person who might not be entirely convinced about christianity :o so in that sense it didn't seem like the right job for him. But I liked it when he was AoC as he always had very wise words (still does). Speaking as a total atheist though!

He's a Druid. Presumably the Church of England didn't mind! Grin
Shallwegoforawalk · 10/10/2021 12:21

@WowIlikereallyhateyou are you sure you met DB? David Beckham is 5 foot 11 according to Wikipedia. Other places quote 6 foot. He certainly never looked small when playing!

littlepinkwinky · 10/10/2021 12:21

I met a tiny actor who played a very famous robot, and I said "ooh, hello, you probably don't remember, but my husband used to modify your cars for you" and he pulled a face, shrugged his shoulders and turned away.

Rude little twat.
