Rude "famous people"

acornfed · 09/10/2021 18:49

We have a famous designer at my kid's school, born to a very wealthy family. Her kids are nice
She can be very unfriendly but inconsistently so - will often blank people one day and be friendly the next. Acts quite haughtily with the teachers. At times very abrupt.
She doesn't have to be friends with us civilians - that I fully understand. But what's with the rude behaviour? What's going on there? The school mums are a pretty innocuous bunch and I'd like to think we are friendly and welcoming.

A cousins friend works in a posh designer store in London. The mother of a very high profile Royal is apparently an absolute nightmare.

DH through his job met various sports people. Most of the footballers were lovely and very down to earth and friendly.

SixTwirlingTutus · 10/10/2021 09:09

I would find constant scrutiny unberable to be honest. Also if you are really famous (or a Royal) I would find it hard not knowing if people are trying to be your friend because they like you or because they want something from you.

@meadowbleu

I'm really shocked and disappointed at the Marcus Rashford reveals. His PR is outstanding then.
You don't have to believe a comment from an anonymous poster.

@Spanielsarepainless

I tripped on a step in a bar and was caught by Archbishop Rowan Williams. He was lovely. But a crap archbishop, unfortunately.
One Easter (so most important service of the year), we had gone to Canterbury Cathedral. We were right by the pulpit. As Rowan Williams walked up to give his sermon, my 2 year old DD did a dirty dash right in front of him. He stopped, gave her a wave and me a smile, before climbing into the pulpit. I know it’s a tiny snapshot, but he came over as a good man.

@IncessantNameChanger

There was a famous musician at my sons school. I didnt recognise him.and I doubt most people would but you would have heard of his band. He was very quite and normal. The only non normal thing about him was that he didnt seem to chat to any of the other parents in the same way as most do. Definitely nothing snooty about him. I think he probably just wanted some normality where his kid was involved. Be there, be a good dad, be chummy with his own arty set.
My bet is Tom Fletcher

@Evilcountspatula

Is it Alex Polizzi??
I have crossed paths with her in a work capacity and I quite liked her.

@Yogawankonobi

Van Morrison is a grumpy old man. Surrounded by gorgeous young women and growls at anyone that doesn’t fawn over him.

Dh works with a few mentioned on this thread and has had only good interactions.

My mum went to school with him and said he was always grumpy, even as a teenager! She didn't know him well, but I think used to get the same bus to school or something, and said he didn't really talk to anyone, was just very aloof.
Walkaround · 10/10/2021 09:17

I expect it’s a way of keeping her distance. Sounds effective, too. Maybe her experience of being friendly to people she is they start asking for fashion or design tips, or about other famous people she knows, and she doesn’t want to have those conversations, or if she has more mundane conversations, she then finds herself being talked about on Mumsnet. (Oh well - maybe not so effective! Grin). It’s her loss, really, not anyone else’s - she has lost, or never had, the art of pleasant but inconsequential interactions.

LizzieSiddal · 10/10/2021 09:17

What most people aren’t aware of is that there is a small but very irritating minority of the general public who can behave really awfully towards those in the public eye. They think they are owed personal time from a particular people, because they watched a tv programme they are in/bought a single of theirs in 1992. They can be quite intimidating if you don’t want to fully engage.
If you’ve famous for any length of time you will come into contact with these people on a regular basis and it gets irritating and sometimes scary. I think a lot decide just to “tune out” and keep their heads down in order to protect themselves.

Having said all that there is no excuse for being rude in a work environment, on sets, behind the scenes etc but when out in public, they can often feel very vulnerable and just want to remain anonymous and get on with their day.

kirinm · 10/10/2021 09:18

@Barnowl25

So pleased to read Ewan McGregor is lovely!
His ex wife probably disagrees.
Lightisnotwhite · 10/10/2021 09:20

I agree about the fame side.
However there is no need to be rude to the people you work with or people who are just doing a normal job. TV or film crew spend their careers working with famous people. Why would you be rude to the the people whose job it is to make you look and sound good on camera/ stage?

Sidneysussex · 10/10/2021 09:20

James Corden. Met him at a wedding probably 2003. He is awful. Arrogant twat in the extreme. He was very quick to make sure everyone know he was a star. He probably wasn't even that famous back then. I do not understand what people can see in him to make him so famous?

hoochyhooha · 10/10/2021 09:21

I've spent a few hours in Margaret Atwood's company and she was absolutely lovely.
I was a student at the time, but she took the time to be so kind and answered all my stupid questions.
I think she guards her privacy and doesn't really care what people think of her, she just gets on with it.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 10/10/2021 09:24

I briefly worked for one part of a famous Irish band. He and his family were absolutely lovely, though he is definitely shy, to the point that I won't give his name. But there are definitely some shy ones that simply aren't in it for the fame side and, especially around their children's lives, don't want to be noticed. I was also involved with Dolores O'Riordan RIP and she was very open about her work and life and was absolutely lovely, down to earth and a great laugh.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 10/10/2021 09:25

I don't want to believe re Marcus Rashford Sad What has he supposedly done or said?

forgotmyusernamagain · 10/10/2021 09:27

@LastToBePicked I do agree

Privacy and boundaries should not be crossed , favours or friendships forced , expectations manipulated of any of the people mentioned here

However, just to be polite , wave at school gate , please and thank you when services provided seem to be most of our wishes

I'm afraid the minority may spoil that and be the instigator of some of these behaviours

Imagine not even being able to thread your eyebrows or sweaty moustache without some stranger screeching at you 😂

Don’t believe it, one person in the internet has said they don’t like him. There’s absolutely no proof this person has even met Marcus and it goes against everything everyone else says about him.

Newyorkhereicome · 10/10/2021 09:32

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe

I'm broken hearted to hear about King Marcus 😢
Why after everything he has done would you believe a couple of anonymous randoms off the internet
floweroverload · 10/10/2021 09:33

@Pantaloony

A friend met Michael McIntyre who turned out to be right up his own arse. She was gutted as she loves his shows and he comes across as so nice but he was so rude and stuck up. She said he was a celebrity she wished she never met in real life.
Maybe he was having a bad day? My DH has met him several times recently and said he was hilarious and very open to chatting.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/10/2021 09:33

There was a thread here within the last couple of weeks - started as a 'How do you address a famous person with a title?' but soon became rather like this, i.e. a long stream of anecdotes about nice/nasty slebs. Nobody had a good word to say about Van Morrison. My favourite was the poster who said 'There are people who like Van Morrison and people who've met Van Morrison'. Grin Love the music, but he sounds like hard work.

MsTSwift · 10/10/2021 09:34

I like the story about Annie Lennox. She was in a shop and a breathless fan approached “are you Annie Lennox?! Her polite reply “not today” 😁

Washeduponthebeach · 10/10/2021 09:35
Grin
HeyGirlHeyBoy · 10/10/2021 09:35

More than one person said it tho... Two or three and no one has said the opposite?

Bookworm65 · 10/10/2021 09:36

Groovergirl

Dana has never revoked her Irish citizenship or moved to America. She still lives in Northern Ireland.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/10/2021 09:37

Agree about advisability of keeping an open mind about people, as we have no way of knowing how true any of this is. However, once you've been on MN as long as I have and seen ever single thread like this feature certain names over and over again, you do start to draw certain conclusions.

I have so far never seen anybody say a bad word about Anthony Head. He's about the only one I can think of! Must be hard never to have an off day in the public eye, especially when some members of the public have no respect for privacy or boundaries, and some of them are probably worried about their and their family's safety.
