Message sent from my phone but I didn't send it

For people that have had reason to research phones as part of suspected affairs, etc., could anyone shed light on how the following is possible?

I had just got in my car from leaving the gym and my iPhone pinged. I didn't have my glasses on but I'm sure I saw my name pop up. When I got home I read it and it said 'I have your phone tee hee'.

This happened two years ago and at the time I just shrugged it off as a scam. I remember mentioning it to my husband, but I can't remember what he said nor how he'd reacted. I had actually thought at the time I had received a message, but I recently noticed that it's on the 'sent' side of the screen and it's a SMS from my mobile number sent to our home number.

I think the timing of the sending of the message coincides with DH buying a secondhand phone, about a week before.

Was his an iPhone too?

Mine and DD’s ended up linked somehow for a while and were getting each other’s text messages.

This also happened to us years ago when we used the same laptop to charge our phones. Somehow everything synced!

beachd · 08/06/2021 14:20

It was SMS not iMessage.

I was not aware of any other devices which were logged in.

Can you do find my phone and see if any other devices come up? Mine shows my phone and my old phone as DD uses it.

Fightingfirewithfire · 08/06/2021 14:29

Ok so we can possibly rule out using one of your old devices, as it came up your number the device would have needed a SIM in it. Usually when you get a new phone but keep.your number they either tell you to swap your SIM , or send you and new one. And once the new one is in then the old SIM describes, even if you are keeping the same number.

So based on you saying it was an SMS it couldn't have come from an old device with your current number , as it wouldn't have worked.

Yiu can have iMessages set up to send as SMS if no network

Fightingfirewithfire · 08/06/2021 14:31

Do you still have the message on your phone?
With out this and with it being over two years ago it's going to be difficult for anyone to help you work out what's happened i.e was it actually a iMessage, a delayed text message sent etc.

Fightingfirewithfire · 08/06/2021 14:32

@WouldBeGood

Yiu can have iMessages set up to send as SMS if no network
But doesn't it require the phone to have a SIM in it?
WouldBeGood · 08/06/2021 14:35

I think the OP’s has a SIM?

tickingthebox73 · 08/06/2021 14:40

I haven't RTFT, but it is 100% possible to spoof a number.

So if I had @beachd 's number (home and mobile) I could text here from my computer and spoof her mobile number. When her phone received the text it would say from @beachd

I could have @beachd 's partner's mobile number and text him as if it were from her phone.

Scammers, debt collectors and call centres use this technique all the time to get you to answer you phone as increasing numbers of people don't answer if they don't know the number.

I'm trying to write this out to make sense and I'm not sure if it will so please bare with me while I give it a go

My iPad is logged into iCloud
My iPhone is logged into the same iCloud
My iPhone has my mobile number attached to it
Both have my email address linked

I can send a text message using my iPad if I'm connected to the internet. It shows on my mobile as a sent message. And if I go into my mobile phone after sending it, it'll look like a sent text from the phone starting a new conversation with whatever number

However, I don't think I can send messages out with iMessage. I.e one that would carry a network charge. Like a house phone. I don't think I could send a text to a house phone without the SIM.

If it goes to a phone/device that has my email or number saved as a contact then it shows on the receiving end as whatever the name/email is saved as
If it's not a saved contact, it'll show as:
The mobile number (if sent from the phone with the SIM)
The email address on iCloud (if send from my iPad without the SIM/number)

I hope this helps Blush

@WouldBeGood

I think the OP’s has a SIM?
Any of my old phones would not have had a SIM in but I now understand that it is possible to send iMessage from a phone without a SIM. And it must have come via my icloud ID? I assumed it was SMS as it was green, but it must have been iMessage but with no network? Is that right?

Yes, the message is still on my phone, although I am now using a different phone to the one it was originally on. When I get a new device I back up everything from the old.

Basically, I think I've established in my mind that it is unlikely DH was sending me a jokey text as he didn't ever say that he had sent it, and when I mentioned the text, he mentioned some convoluted story about sorting out the router with BT while I was out. He never once mentioned that he had one of my old devices.

The fact that there was this story about the router/BT having somehow sent the message (!) leads me to believe he knew something else and was panicking and told me garbage because he knew I knew no better back then.

I can definitely rule out the children as they were not at home and would not have had access to my old phones.

The trouble is, I don't know where the old devices were. Now, I would make sure my phone was wiped; back then, I probably just left it thinking that it couldnt be used without my SIM.

Can I suggest you contact Apple Support - they’re very helpful and friendly and will walk you through any steps that need to be taken to understand what’s happening on your device and to secure your account or devices to stop this happening again.

Who do you think sent the message?

Name99 · 08/06/2021 16:15

What are you suspecting your husband of?

eekbumbler · 08/06/2021 21:07

Something does happen if you send a text to a landline number accidentally - you do get a message or a random number calling you back - but not usually haha I've got your phone!

WatieKatie · 08/06/2021 23:47

I have a male friend who writes tee hee.

So was the text received by your home phone?
