Disgusting ad in elephant and castle promoting affairs

I read it as for either men or women, so don't specifically see it as being an issue for women's rights. .

While it's not something I'll be signing up for and the morality of it is somewhat questionable, it's not illegal. Though I think it's odd it's on a massive billboard in the middle of E&C. I would prefer it to be more discreet really.

SirSamuelVimes · 08/03/2021 13:34

Of course women have sex in my world. But statistically, men are more likely to cheat. So while the bra in the advert is used to suggest women's role in the affair, it doesn't follow that women are the target market. The woman* is the subject of the advert, but men are the target. As they are more likely to cheat and therefore more likely to sign up for the website. As a pp mentioned upthread, affair sites are overwhelmingly filled with men. Women are so thin on the ground the site owners resort to making up profiles.

  • Guessing 99.9% of men signing up to that site know what a woman is. Funny how the definition isn't hateful when it comes to knowing where you want to put your knob.

It's such a LOVELY advert for international womans day Wink Grin

SirSamuelVimes · 08/03/2021 13:35

Extra marital affair stats.

dworky · 08/03/2021 13:47

Not aimed at married parents specifically though, is it?

shinynewapple21 · 08/03/2021 13:50

I would imagine ha img an affair still illegal in respect of Covid restrictions (mixing households) Grin

WendyTestaburger · 08/03/2021 13:54

@SirSamuelVimes

Hmm. Well, if "woman = adult human female" (the dictionary definition) and "I ❤️ JKR" are considered to be sufficiently offensive by billboard companies that they either pull them down after a single complaint, or refuse to put them up in the first place, I should say this should be easy to get taken down as being offensive.

Let me know how it goes, OP.

(Joking. Obviously it won't get taken down. Because men's right to a shag is supreme, whereas women's rights to define ourselves and express an opinion are hateful.)

This!
LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 08/03/2021 13:54

I imagine that the people having an affair didn't need to sign up to a website to achieve it.

It's a strange advert trying to drum up business. It's like casinos, doesn't need advertising - people just go.

Isitsixoclockalready · 08/03/2021 14:02

Yeah no doubt extremely morally questionable but unfortunately one has to assume that the person concerned has done their research before starting up the website so clearly there is a market.

Nollopian · 08/03/2021 14:04

You know women can register on elicit encounter to have an affair, right? Otherwise what Incentive is there for men to register if its just a load of randy old men looking to cheat on their wives on there, with no-one to cheat with.
What makes you think this was aimed at men having an affair? In all honesty as women have mostly been doing the home schooling and whilst women in the majority are the SAHP whilst men have carried on working i would suggest that this ad was actually aimed at women,
Kids back at school- ✔
More time for an affair - ✔
Think logically about it its women that now have the additional free time not the men 🤔

Staffy1 · 08/03/2021 14:06

Bring it to the mayor's attention. If he supposedly had adverts of scantily clad people removed, I'm sure he won't be thrilled with this one either.

Snookie00 · 08/03/2021 14:09

All these people frothing about this, sharing the advert and contacting the ASA. You do realise this is exactly what the advertisers were hoping for? It prolongs the story and gets it waaay more publicity than a single billboard could have done.

They've been advertising like this on trains for years, where have you been?

I should think they are hoping to get in the news. Pretty likely to get picked up via mumsnet.
IsThePopeCatholic · 08/03/2021 14:20

I just think it’s degrading for men and women.

Shayelle2009 · 08/03/2021 14:20

Haha @ravenmum... brilliant 😂😂

Snookie00 · 08/03/2021 14:22

Yep. The company and advertising team will be running their hands at every “disgusted from Tunbridge Wells” letter that they is sent.

Shayelle2009 · 08/03/2021 14:22

The uncut version that is 😬

Opentooffers · 08/03/2021 14:23

I'd have less issue with it, and see the funny side, if there was a pair of sexy men's underwear on there too, whereas at present it appears sexist and divisive whichever way you take it. It should be an add that appeals to men as much as women, and would of been in their interest to do so, as aiming at both sexes signing up would make there campaign more successful, but this add would put more women off I would think.

SirSamuelVimes · 08/03/2021 14:27

Yes, I am sure that is the message that the advertisers are trying to create. The implication is that lots of bored housewives will suddenly find themselves with free time and sign up for an affair on this website. But the implication isn't the same as the target. It is the product. The implied sex hungry SAHMs shedding their inhibition & marriage vows along with their lacy red bra are what is being offered to men as an enticement to sign up to the website.

It's the same as the classic image of 'woman draped across sports car' in adverts. It doesn't mean the ad for the sports car is aimed at women. It means the prospect of (increased chances of sex with) a woman is being used to sell the car.

rainbowmash · 08/03/2021 14:28

Can't see anything to suggest it's only encouraging male affairs. Seems pretty equal-opportunities to me... Agree this is crass but certainly not unlawful. I've seen much worse adverts for gambling.

EmbarrassingMama · 08/03/2021 14:36

Ads like this aren't permitted in the UK for all to see. They're not "family friendly" and therefore shouldn't be readily available to the eyes of children.

Complain to the ASA.

5128gap · 08/03/2021 14:36

I think the advert is aimed at women. Kids being back at school will typically result in more time for women than for men.
I don't think it promotes affairs. No one who doesn't want to have an affair is going to be persuaded into it by seeing this. It promotes a site where people, in this case women, who want to have an affair can find partners to do so.

LaminateAnecdotes · 08/03/2021 14:40

I wonder what would happen if everyone that disapproved signed up with a fake profile, rather than just complain to no effect ?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 08/03/2021 14:41

I think it's aimed at women - we all know men need no encouragement. This is aimed at getting women to sign up.

I'm not a fan of banning stuff. The problem isn't so much that this ad exists, it's that there's no consistency when it comes to offense. No one has a right to go through life not ever seeing anything they find offensive, but men's opinions are pandered to even when it means throwing women's legitimate concerns under the bus.

It is a tasteless advert, making light of the very real harm caused to families by affairs.
