Have you seen this? How can something like this be allowed

I do think it’s sad that someone has thought about and actually written this advert, some people and companies have no morals.

OverweightPidgeon · 08/03/2021 12:30

And I’d also lol if the person that wrote this gets cheated on .

GoodToBeFree · 08/03/2021 12:32

@piglet81 thank you

There are lots of things that are not allowed to be advertised which aren't illegal, e.g. cigarettes. So i don't think you can make the conclusion that because affairs aren't legal the advert is fine.

Considering advertising standards go as far as not allowing adverts to perpetuate certain stereotypes regarding gender roles I'm surprised that this would be allowed.

FranCan · 08/03/2021 12:33

@OverweightPidgeon ha ha ha, ooo how saucy

Rose76445 · 08/03/2021 12:35

@SerendipityJane

How on earth are we not allowed to be offended? Because it's legal? You are okay with everything that is technically legal? Very low standards you have there.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/03/2021 12:36

I do find it faintly sexist as in now the kids are back in school, the housewife will be bored and start calling tradesmen to come and “fix” her boiler, piping, guttering and what not as cover for a midday bonk.

Snookie00 · 08/03/2021 12:37

It’s a provocative advertising campaign which relies on people making it viral across the internet. I’m nowhere near Elephant and Castle so wouldn’t have seen it and thanks to you, I and many others now have. You’ve done exactly what they wanted you to do.

PlanDeRaccordement · 08/03/2021 12:38

The red bra indicates they’re definitely saying it’s the mothers who will now be so bone idle with the kids out at school that they will stray.....it’s not illegal but I do find it offensively sexist as it’s plainly implying only mothers will be cheating.

Hoppinggreen · 08/03/2021 12:38

It’s shit and tacky but not illegal
And as a PP pointed out at least everyone involved knows the score, even if their poor partners don’t

Magicpaintbrush · 08/03/2021 12:38

Obviously it's not illegal but it is completely depressing. A more realistic version of that ad would be 'Kids back to school, have an affair and destroy the lives of your innocent spouse and children, turn your marriage into a lie and treat your spouse with total contempt leaving a trail of trauma in your wake - and don't forget you can look forward to seeing your kids 50% less of the time and losing your home as well when you end up divorced and you both have to downsize'.

Doesn't sound so fun and mischievous when you actually tell it like it really is.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 08/03/2021 12:40

Actually an affair probably is illegal at the moment isn’t it? Unless your affair partner is living alone and you’re bubbled up, without your spouse’s knowledge.

“Shall we form a household bubble with my brother darling?” “No” “Why?” “Errrrr”

Magicpaintbrush · 08/03/2021 12:40

Should also have added 'and save money on Christmas cards because a lot of your friends and family won't want to know you once they find out you're a lying, cheating shit'.

NormallyTea · 08/03/2021 12:40

I booked the day off work, got the hoover out and put a load of whites in the washing machine.

Wish I’d seen this advert before I used my annual leave. Sounds much more fun than my day.

(I think it’s a horrible distasteful advert)

Onedaysomedaynowadays · 08/03/2021 12:43

I'm obviously a horrible person because I think it's quite funny 😂

Echobelly · 08/03/2021 12:50

IIRC these sites don't work very well anyway; Ashley Madison, which is a site along those lines, was found to have almost no women on it and the owners had to make up loads of profiles. www.businessinsider.com/ashley-madison-almost-no-women-2015-8?r=US&IR=T

SirGawain · 08/03/2021 12:52

Report it to the Advertising Standards Authority;

ThreeFeetTall · 08/03/2021 12:53

Time to get the spray paint out OP! Could you add something to make your point?

RichmondMumof2 · 08/03/2021 12:56

Yes agreed OP. Horrible advert and message. Thank you for sharing.

I've complained to the ASA just now.

It is a good example of our race to the lowest moral standard possible.

PaterPower · 08/03/2021 13:03

As a PP has said, it’s encouraging the breaking of the current lockdown. It’s also in poor taste.

The problem with making a fuss about it is that it’s likely to get the advertiser even more attention, possibly in the national press, for next to nothing. Any fine they get will be tiny compared to what the extra publicity would do.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/03/2021 13:18

And an ad that is (even obliquely) anti-trans is against the spirit of a law protecting certain characteristics

That would be the same law that is supposed to protect us against sex based discrimination. Isn't it telling that the only protected characteristic whiich doesn't trigger a hate crime response isi sex? Race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity - all hate crimes if you do so much as like a tweet with a bad taste joke.

Misogyny is just find and dandy as displayed by this advert presenting mothers as idle, bored housewives and responsible for the childcare.

The uncut version

Disgusting ad in elephant and castle promoting affairs
littlepattilou · 08/03/2021 13:22

It's nasty.

@Magicpaintbrush

This. ^

@GoodToBeFree YANBU at all. I think it's fucking grubby and nasty, and so are the people who use it. I hope their life is upended in the worst possible way, and their spouse gets everything.

And I agree @SerendipityJane you have no right to tell anyone they are not allowed to be offended. How arrogant to think you can do that!

As as a few others have said, this is clearly encouraging people to break current lockdown rules.

Like a few others, I am reporting this to the ASA today.
