Tv on or off?

Not a major serious issue but just wandered what people’s preference is for going to sleep?

I like the quiet & dark but my OH likes the TV on until he falls asleep.

Does anyone else have this? Is there a compromise you can come to? I just have to get try and fall asleep but it’s always a shit sleep!

I cannot sleep in silence so I wear wireless headphones to bed. DH went through a tv phase so I wore a sleep mask. So could you wear an eye mask and he wear headphones?

PhoneLock · 16/02/2020 23:22

Total silence me. Luckily my husband is the same so no compromise needed.

We don't have a TV in the bedroom.

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:24

@BarbedBloom

Eye mask is a good idea!! Aren’t headphones uncomfortable to sleep in?

@PhoneLock - I loved the idea of getting a TV in the bedroom until now! It’s either he sleeps or I sleep 😭

No TV in the bedroom. As silent and dark as possible.

AlCalavicci · 16/02/2020 23:27

We had a tv in our bedroom for a short while DH always put it on but like you i prefer the dark although I do listen the the radio on very low volume.
The tv we had blew it speaker ( very old tv ) and we never bothered replacing it .
My DH would put the tv on downstairs the minuet he got up it did not matter what was on , it could be the rolling news , repeats of a show he watched a few days ago , ANY sport , or the really cheesy old quiz shows .

BackforGood · 16/02/2020 23:27

Really poor sleep hygiene that.
Going to sleep time = dark and quiet.

He'd have to move to another room.

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:30

Glad I’m not the only one who needs to sleep in the dark!! To make it worse my DD is currently in our room (until she’s old enough to be moved into her own room) just feel like it’s not fair on me or her. His argument is he won’t be able to get to sleep and then go to work 🙄

I need a light on to sleep so have a touch lamp on the lowest light , luckily my oh can sleep whatever it's like

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:32

@BackforGood completely agree! I find I have a deeper sleep if I’m in the dark. I also feel well rested when I wake up. Currently waking up everyday not feeling that way (only been living together for a few months!)

No telly in the bedroom, I read and dh listens to music on his headphones. When I shut my book (turn off kindle really), dh turns his music off and we lay in silence in complete darkness. Bliss.

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:33

@moolady1977

My OH sleeps through everything as well! Could be a storm outside and he wouldn’t wake up but as soon as you turn the TV on he’s wide awake. I think I could live with a dim light! I think it’s the noise. Plus if it’s something interesting I can’t sleep because I want to watch it😂

EEK that a long link ! sorry

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:35

@Ludways

What a dream!! I think I could deal with it if it was like that but he needs it on until he’s in his deep sleep which is normally 1am and meaning I’m still awake!!

@AlCalavicci

Rosehip345 · 16/02/2020 23:38

Silence and dark for me. We have no TV in the bedroom or I think DH would want it in constantly

AlCalavicci · 16/02/2020 23:39

I have not tried them myself but i know a few people that use that type of thing while out running , sorry I dont know what brad they use , but it looks like it could work for you .

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:40

@BackforGood

Will be showing him this!! Hopefully he will take it onboard! Can’t remember what a decent night of sleep is anymore👎🏼

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:41

@Rosehip345

Thinking no TV is an option now. I like it during the day if I’m tidying the room and putting things away just to have the news on in the morning. But I want to sleep at night! Any way I can sneak a TV out without him noticing?😂

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/02/2020 23:41

How did he sleep before you got a tv in your room?

He’s disturbing you and your baby, selfish.

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:42

@AlCalavicci

It’s wonderful thank you. I’d happily try anything if it means the possibility of getting a good night sleep!!

Pyjamaface · 16/02/2020 23:45

I fall asleep with the TV on, well, laptop with netflix or prime on. At some point the programme stops and then the laptop goes into sleep so for the majority of the night it is dark and silent.

I cannot fall asleep in a dark, silent room. I will lay awake for hours, over thinking every non-event in my life. I need noise

DP could fall asleep on a tightrope in a storm so he's not bothered

mummaintraining19 · 16/02/2020 23:45

@AnneLovesGilbert

He’d watch videos on his phone but I made him stop because I worried about him falling asleep with the phone on the bed, it overheating and causing a fire (I’m a worry wart!!). We’ve always had a TV in the room (not really used) but when I told him he can’t fall asleep to his phone it feels like the TV is never off!!

He is being incredibly selfish. But he doesn’t see if that way because he likes his sleep. Luckily my DD sleeps through the night I just worry she’s not having a GOOD sleep or will get into the habit where she needs noise to sleep!!

I need it to be dark and quiet. I got new blackout lined curtains and my sleep improved hugely. I prefer no light on on the landing.

Sometimes when I cant sleep I listen to music or audio books. But i couldn't bear a TV on.
