Just a nosey post!! Grin
How much did your engagement rings costs?

What was the cost relative to household income?

OP posts:

3k. Household income right at the time was 15k but it's usually 100k+. I was very ill, he had been made redundant and couldn't really take full-time employment as he was taking care of me and our little girl.

It was a tough time and I'm so I'm glad it's behind us. I was shocked when he proposed although he said lovely things about staying positive and knowing that better things were coming. I was so scared of dying and leaving my daughter with no memories of me I couldn't really summon up any excitement.

When i got the all clear I gave him back the ring and told him it's not no but not now. I want a really calm time for a while, enjoy the mundane and for him to propose again in the future when we can both really enjoy it and the wedding planning. I am really looking forward to it.

ReadyforTakeOff · 06/04/2022 21:58

About £800 against household income of £150k at the time.

ISeeTheLight · 06/04/2022 22:03

£2.8k, a gorgeous vintage ring from around 1930. Household income was about £155k.

merryhouse · 06/04/2022 22:12

Mine cost £250. Student grant/loan at the time was about ten times that - so today the equivalent would be about £950. I was still a student (just done Finals, about to do another course) and H a post-grad with an income of ?around 6k but with the cushion of a small inheritance (about 1.5 times a NQT salary).

Our wedding rings cost £15 (mine) and £25 (his) from The Gold Centre.

SockFluffInTheBath · 06/04/2022 22:16

£800 I think 18 years ago, household income was about £30k. My eternity ring cost a lot more, but I don’t really wear either these days.

Hbh17 · 06/04/2022 22:18

Back in 1989, so hard to remember, but I think cost about £500. Husband had just graduated, so his income was zero - not sure how he paid for it, to be honest! I was working, but we never had joint money - then or since - so my income not relevant.

MostlyOk · 06/04/2022 22:23

I don't yet have a ring/fiance but when I do, there's a 1.5 carat diamond ringing sitting there, waiting to be ready-fashioned, courtesy of my utterly fabulous mum.

BottlingBurpsForGrandma · 06/04/2022 22:29

Mine was £450 and household income about £17k (he was an admin assistant and I was a student)

It's the most beautiful engagement ring I've ever seen.

applecharlotte12 · 06/04/2022 22:40

Me too, we did exactly the same. Except I have my grans wedding ring I inherited so spent £0 on rings in total. Our household income is £120k. We also had a civil partnership and spent £2k in total on that.

applecharlotte12 · 06/04/2022 22:43

Oops that was in response to

Margo34 · 06/04/2022 22:55

7 ish years ago. I was a student and my OH was unemployed, recently redundant at the time. Ring cost £1k, insured for more.

Am I the only one that wonders how come 3 yr old threads suddenly get revived ? Grin

TheVillageOfUpperDenture · 06/04/2022 23:25

OP most of the original purchase price covers the making not its resale value - in years to come it won't be worth anywhere near the cost.

Just buy the one you genuinely like instead of focusing on the cost.

JellybeansJelly · 06/04/2022 23:26

It cost £13k. Valued at £20k. Household income at the time was £150k.

Oh sugar!
Hausa · 06/04/2022 23:32

A bit over £9K. Household income is £153K (this hasn’t changed, we’ve only been engaged eight months).

I think it’s a very beautiful waste of money, and I adore it.

ChameFangeNail · 06/04/2022 23:36

When we bought my engagement ring our household income was £100k. My ring cost £250. It’s a vintage Victorian diamond ring set in platinum and I found it on eBay. I adore it. It’s gorgeous and I get compliments on it all the time.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 06/04/2022 23:37

Never saw the price, came out of a jewelery candle and I told dh it was a perfect engagement ring. He said OK, that's what it is...
Haven't taken it off and the wedding band was custom made to fit it.
Household income at the time was about £40Kish

Neverreturntoathread · 06/04/2022 23:41

£1500ish, joint income was then £120k, mostly mine 😬

Easterdaffsx · 07/04/2022 10:30

5k amd we earn around £120k a year between us
Probably too much tbh but we both loved it

Vasectomyreversalhopeful · 07/04/2022 10:33

First one about £300. We had very little spare money at the time.

Lost it unfortunately and second one was £455. Much higher income now but have a house and child to spend money on. I absolutely love it and wouldn’t swap it for a more expensive one anyway.

SilverHairedCat · 07/04/2022 10:45

£900. Joint income at the time of about £80k. My wedding ring was about £250, his ring was free - I won it in a competition! 😂

billy1966 · 07/04/2022 10:46

3,200, 31 years ago.

It is a stunning emerald cut Ceylon sapphire, surrounded by diamonds.
The Sapphire is a gorgeous mid blue colour and the ring is circa 1850.

5% of his salary at the time.

Gensola · 07/04/2022 10:47

£3,500 - not sure what he earned at the time but he’s a teacher so I’m assuming not that much Grin it’s the most beautiful thing I own and my most treasured possession.

Madickenxx · 07/04/2022 10:54

Recently engaged. The ring cost around £2.5K...the budget was £3K. We don't live together (I have teens so waiting until they are old enough to be able to choose whether to live with us or on their own). We are both in good jobs and comfortable enough (him more so than me). I would have been happy with a £100 ring from Etsy but fell in love with my ring while out window shopping.
