Just a nosey post!! Grin
How much did your engagement rings costs?

What was the cost relative to household income?

£250 as our household income was probably less than 20k between us.

I'm upgrading it as the metal is really weak as its so cheap. It's about to snap. And I'll add a bit more bling to the sides whilst I'm at it. But it's many many years later and we're in a very different position now (thank god).

I'm still not going to spend more than 1500 resetting it though.

LightDrizzle · 06/10/2019 17:00

1st marriage, £650, from Ratners 🤣

  • however it was beautiful. A Ceylon oval sapphire in a diamond halo.
2nd marriage, an indecent amount, but I love it. It’s a plain solitaire and income then of around 250k.

Mine was 12k. Household income £200k. Insurance is a right faff though

Rafflesway · 06/10/2019 17:04

£250 in 1978 which was quite a lot in those days.

We chose it together! I tried on several more but nothing compared for me.

DH earned £70 per week at the time and it took him a few months to save but jeweller kept for him with an initial deposit.

Still wear it 24/7 41 years later. Smile

20viona · 06/10/2019 17:05

Mine was £4900. Partners salary about £2k a month. He chose a Tiffany ring and I love it.

typetytypetypes · 06/10/2019 17:05

A bit different from the other posts I’ve read so far! (Nothing wrong with that)

My engagement ring was ‘free’, DH proposed with a ring handed down from a relative, I’ve no idea what it’s worth (maybe I should look into that for insurance!), cost £25 to resize.

DH’s engagement ring (I bought him a ring too) cost me £80.

Household income at the time was around £18k.

ManxomeFoe · 06/10/2019 17:07

Engagement ring £1.4k, household income around £75k. It's gorgeous and I love it, it makes me happy every time I wear it (which I can't at the moment because of stupid swollen pregnancy fingers).

bathorshower · 06/10/2019 17:10

About £350, which was less than DH earned in a week at the time. After he proposed, he asked how much an engagement ring cost; he had absolutely no idea. We chose it together, and it's still a design I'd choose now.

SallyLovesCheese · 06/10/2019 17:10

I'm not sure how much as I've never asked, but DH was earning just £800 a month at the time and paying his way with rent etc (I was earning about £2000/month), so I'm guessing a couple of hundred. It cost about £45 to have it re-sized.

PandaG · 06/10/2019 17:11

About £80 mine and £60 his - joint income about 5k we were both students. Wedding rings < £100 the pair.

Shmithecat2 · 06/10/2019 17:11

Never had an engagement ring, but did get a lovely trilogy ring after I had ds. £1.5k. Household income 6 figures. We didn't really set a budget. We looked at cheaper and more expensive rings but didn't LOVE any of them.

sunshine5997 · 06/10/2019 17:13

Mine was £200 and it was bought second hand from a small jewellers. It's absolutely beautiful.. to be honest though I would have been happy enough with a haribo sweet ring😂

Mintypea5 · 06/10/2019 17:13

Mine technically didn't cost anything as it's my grandmothers she insisted DH used it. It's priceless to me sentimentally because my grandma/ grandpa were my world and they died just after my wedding.

I had it valued for insurance reasons and it's work over 13k

BertrandRussell · 06/10/2019 17:15

Well, the Duchess If Sussex is currently wearing a gold and turquoise ring that cost about 200 quid- so if it’s good enough for her....

Normandy144 · 06/10/2019 17:15

Our household income is £85k and my ring was £180p. I think we spent a combined sum of about £1000 wedding rings for us both. Wr had a budget of about 2-2.5k for my engagement ring but got a great deal in hatton garden we didn't need to spend that much.

Normandy144 · 06/10/2019 17:16

That should read £1800 and not 180p!

fallingasleeprightnow · 06/10/2019 17:18

£2500 and household income at the time was 65k.

CrystalShark · 06/10/2019 17:21

I’d hate to be walking around with jewellery on that was worth more than a hundred quid max! I’d feel so weird about the possibility of losing or damaging it. I was very clear with DH when we started discussing marriage I’d be really annoyed if he spent more than a hundred quid or so on an engagement ring and thankfully he listened. Can’t stop gazing at it still and I’ve been wearing it three months 😂 it’s so beautiful, I adore it.

Echobelly · 06/10/2019 17:22

My grandfather had been dropping heavy hints that my grandmother's engagement ring was around, should anyone want it, so when DH proposed (he hadn't expected to until the words just came out) and he told me he had no idea what to do about the ring, I mentioned the heavy hints, so that was my engagement ring, and DH gave £500 to a charity of my grandfather's choice in return for it, as he didn't want to just take it.

I've valued it a few times since then, it's worth many, many times more than that in fact I can't even afford to insure it for its full worth, but that's hardly the point anyway really!

Silvertincan · 06/10/2019 17:24

@CrystalShark Ooooh put those claws away!!!!
It's just a fun post, after a conversation between three generations, talking about how the whole process and cost of rings has changed.

@TiddyTid Love that!! Grin

OP posts:
FenellaMaxwell · 06/10/2019 17:25

It’s worth about £5k, but we didn’t pay for it as it’s a family heirloom. No idea what my great grandfather paid but he bought it in 1919, so a lot less than £5k!

Silvertincan · 06/10/2019 17:25

I think it is so special to have a ring passed through the generations, I bet you are thrilled to bits @Echobelly!!

OP posts:
trevthecat · 06/10/2019 17:28

Mine was around 1.5k our income around 70k

firstimemamma · 06/10/2019 17:30

I don't know how much mine cost and didn't think most people did either.

Silvertincan · 06/10/2019 17:32

Have most of you kept your original engagement rings, then?
I love pp comment about a trilogy after ds, what a wonderful gesture from your DH
