How soon did you have sex after birth?

iveforgottenmyname · 02/09/2019 22:11

I'm concerned about this as I know my partner has a high sex drive (I usually do too) but I am due to give birth in a few weeks. It has already been a few weeks since we last did it with being so big and hot and tired.

How soon after birth am I likely to be able to have sex? Or to even want to have sex! What's the average?

Those who had sex earlier than 6 weeks, did GPs tell you otherwise or did you not know?

madcatladyforever · 03/09/2019 23:15

At least 6 weeks but I am concerned that you are worried about his high sex drive. It should be all about you right now not him wanting sex.
Is he going to die or explode if he doesn't get it? Fuck me these men!!! What would he do if he was stranded on a desert island, I very much doubt anything would happen to him.

hittheroadjack1 · 03/09/2019 23:16

4 months. I bled for a long time.

PumpkinP · 03/09/2019 23:18

You don’t actually have to wait for the 6 week check, especially if you had a straight forward birth. It’s not like they actually physically check you.

What do you mean do the GP tell otherwise? Otherwise about what? Did we not know what?

BoomZahramay · 03/09/2019 23:26

1 week, 1 week & 2 weeks.
3 straightforward vaginal births with no stitches.

I wanted urgent confirmation that I could still orgasm Blush

MashedSpud · 03/09/2019 23:29

Two weeks and three weeks.

TheFutureFreaksMeOut · 03/09/2019 23:30

8 months

SirVixofVixHall · 03/09/2019 23:30

Six months each time. I had a v traumatic c section with dc1 , and after the second I was totally exhausted and my scar was painful.
Also I just didn’t feel like it. I was breastfeeding all the time, not getting much sleep. Sex was the last thing on my mind for ages.

busybarbara · 04/09/2019 00:04

About six months but then only once or twice a year for the first few years. Children are hard work Grin

EmrysAtticus · 04/09/2019 07:25

4 months. Attempted it around 12 weeks but was agony. Suffered with pain during sex until I saw a private pelvic floor physio who immediately diagnosed the problem and taught me what to do. DS was 2.5 then.

Mary1935 · 04/09/2019 07:47

This is the last thing I’d be thinking about. You sound like your putting your husbands needs before your own.

RushianDisney · 04/09/2019 07:50

3 weeks, as soon as the bleeding stopped.

barryfromclareisfit · 04/09/2019 07:51

Eighteen years and two months.

Oh, see what you mean. Just less than six weeks. It felt weird because of my episiotomy scar.

Branleuse · 04/09/2019 07:57

Within a week, but it was gentle, we didnt finish, and it was entirely led by me, as I just felt overwhelmed with love for my partner and my hormones were strong. There was no pressure whatsoever

SinkGirl · 04/09/2019 08:00

It doesn’t matter if your birth was straightforward - everyone has a placenta that detaches. After birth your cervix takes time to close and there’s an open wound in your uterus. The advice to wait six weeks is not because of variables like birth injuries, but because of the infection risk every woman has due to this open wound.

MrsA2015 · 04/09/2019 08:05

2 years. Thanks to PND , PTSD and non stop breastfeeding a baby that would wake or cry the very second I decided to do something other than feed her. Whatever time of day/nightGrin

coffeeforone · 04/09/2019 08:15

Just before 6 week check. I wanted to know there weren't any issues and if there were that would have been a good point to discuss with GP,

What advice?

So many people come on these thread to talk about 'the advice' but where is this advice coming from?

If this open wound from detaching a placenta is such a huge risk why is the NHS not talking about it and making people aware?

SinkGirl · 04/09/2019 10:30

They are, certainly in my area - apart from the fact that this is basic biology. The placenta is around the size of a dinner plate. It comes away from the uterine wall leaving an open wound. Most sources cite recovery period as 4-6 weeks.

helloclue.com/articles/life-stages/postpartum-sex-fertility-and-contraception

mumsgrapevine.com.au/2018/03/uterus-hole-after-birth/

This is why you’re not supposed to use tampons for postnatal bleeding.

duffyluth · 04/09/2019 13:13

'Most sources'

I suppose it depends on your source. This post is the first time i have ever seen anyone mention the placenta and risk re sex. The first time. Ever.

If you look hard enough of course you will be able to link something g to show your point, but ultimately how reliable are those sources?

a couple of non UK opinions on website isn't really giving much in the way of actual health advice.

duffyluth · 04/09/2019 13:19

First article, written by a midwife (maybe) non uk, so different advice to ours. Yes I know the site is used by many people from many countries but tbf it is predominantly UK.

Second article? Refers to having 'bubs' - hardly worth the effort of the link!

duffyluth · 04/09/2019 13:20

Chitarra · 04/09/2019 13:25

DC1 - 5 weeks
DC2 - 3 months
DC3 - I genuinely can't remember Blush

MarySibleysFamiliar · 04/09/2019 13:29

Nearly two years! Had no sex drive at all after DD2 so DH didn't get any. He's a good husband and didn't bug me about it. Did the deed again once, got pregnant and my sex drive went through the roof and we've been at it like rabbits for the 8 years since.

Your DH's sex drive has nothing to do with when you're ready to have sex after birth. You should wait until you are completely ready yourself.

I was still in pain from my very normal birth for quite some time after my firstborn so there's no way I would have DTD at 6 weeks.
