DH shouts up the stairs. Why can’t he walk nearer?

DH drives me nuts. Instead of just walking upstairs to have a conversation he stays downstairs and shouts up. He usually shouts a question that requires a long answer and then he gets annoyed when he can’t hear the long answer.
It really sets me on edge. Not sure why he does it other than he’s a bit lazy or it’s because it’s a family trait.

My DH does this sometimes. It really pisses me off and I tell him so. For me, the major irritation in this is that generally I have to then get up and walk upstairs to hear him, when actually he should be the one who is speaking first and surely should therefore makes the effort to move! Grrrrrrrr!

Rtmhwales · 25/03/2019 21:01

I'd just ignore it and pretend I can't hear it.

PristineCondition · 25/03/2019 21:06

I m guilty of this Blush
I have no defence and I've got poor hearing in normal range but still get pissy when I yell from a distance but can't hear the reply

topcat2014 · 25/03/2019 21:08

I try, without success, to enforce a rule that if you are not in the same room as someone then don't speak to at them.

The thing is, in our 3 bed semi, you can hear every room, roughly, from every other, so I am ignored..

PatrickMerricksGoshawk · 25/03/2019 21:10

Ugh. My Dad did this and it was infuriating. It's a sign that he thinks his time is more valuable than yours. Why should he bother to walk up the stairs when you can only be waiting around to pay attention to him?

(I MAY be projecting just a little Blush)

Chocolateisfab · 25/03/2019 21:11

'I am in the kitchen /front room if you want me'
Don't answer..
My dc do this
..

NaturalBornWoman · 25/03/2019 21:11

I can't stand this and wouldn't answer. When my children were living at home it was a rule that if you wanted to speak to someone you go to where they are. Otherwise people would be yelling all over the house. It's uncivilised.

Ohyesiam · 25/03/2019 21:14

My oh is half deaf and does this daily, after disturbing the peace shouting yes question he then has to shout what? What? What was that?
Tobeay it gets on my tits is a MASSIVE understatement.

He also refuses to get his ( shite) hearing tested. Angry

MayFayner · 25/03/2019 21:15

I refuse to engage in conversations from another room. I admit I do sometimes shout up the stairs, but only if it’s a statement that doesn’t need a verbal response, e.g:

I SAID DINNNNNEEEEEERRRR!!!!!!!

babba2014 · 25/03/2019 21:34

I ignore because I don't have the energy to shout back as it gets muffled amongst the other sounds anyway lol.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 25/03/2019 22:19

Yep ignore. My partner does this and it drives me nuts - I just ignore although I did used to get up and go and answer her then I thought "what am I doing?" And I've stopped. So annoying though.

SnoogyWoo · 25/03/2019 23:32

Reminds me of this!

DH shouts up the stairs. Why can’t he walk nearer?
Davros · 25/03/2019 23:37

DD's room is three floors up from the living area. We send each other texts.

PassMeTheWine · 25/03/2019 23:42

My DH does this and it really pisses me of! If I ignore him he will keep calling my name Angry

Mammajay · 25/03/2019 23:44

Everyone in our house does it and we all complain when other people do it!

damekindness · 25/03/2019 23:54

I have form for talking to people as I roam the house - special mention for opening the fridge and yelling conversations into it. It is apparently exquisitely annoying

GiantKitten · 25/03/2019 23:59

“I CAN’T HEAR YOU!” yelled back is quite satisfying.

Then if they choose to go on shouting you can legitimately ignore them Smile

PickAChew · 26/03/2019 00:02

Because every single step up the stairs makes my hip go crunch. Sorry.

Newyearbollocks · 26/03/2019 00:20

My ex did this, then called me ignorant for not replying. One of the many reasons he is my ex.

RomanyQueen1 · 26/03/2019 00:24

ha Ha, this is our house. We all do it though and complain that others do it, except for ds2 and it drives him mad.
It's bad if we are all at home, but it's usually quite quiet these days.
It used to sound like bedlam though and i pity our neighbour.
Though it was the same when his kids were at home.

SurgeHopper · 26/03/2019 00:25

I do this but it doesn't work with DH cos he's forrin 🙄

Longdistance · 26/03/2019 00:27

My dh does this. He also leaps on me as soon as I walk in the front door from work and throws information at me before I’ve managed to compose myself.

Decormad38 · 26/03/2019 01:49

Im not alone then in finding this annoying. I know dd does too. Thanks all.

@damekindness

special mention for opening the fridge and yelling conversations into it

Oh god that made me proper LOL.

When DS was small I fully admit to shouting up the stairs "Are you dressed?" "Are you up?" "Are you in the bathroom?"

H was partially deaf so it didn't disturb him. Although I did use to extra loudly yell "I'M OFF TO WORK! SEE YOU LATER! LOVE YOU" as I went out the door. (After saying goodbye in person, obviously.)

This thread has really made me think TBH. I am now losing my hearing and I get really irritated when DS talks to me from another room, let alone downstairs/upstairs. It's just fucking infuriating and I now understand what his dad felt when he had to keep saying "pardon" multiple times.

Onecreamteatoomany · 26/03/2019 14:36

I have a rule that if DH or one of the kids needs to talk to me or needs something then they have to come and find me, not shout between rooms or down the stairs. It doesn't always work but I then ignore them until they remember the rule.
