In shock - I’ve just been sacked

I’m a single mum with a mortgage. I’ve worked in the NHS for 21 years. I’ve had a really shitty few years, left an abusive relationship, struggles with my mental health and had an accident resulting in several fractures.

I have had three absences since my return from long term sickness (flu, D&V, and a horrendous reaction to antibiotics).
I went to the third formal sickness interview today and I’ve had my contract terminated.

I’m in shock I think. They’ve applied the policy to the letter so I doubt there are grounds for appeal. After years of service and being burnt out by the demands of the job I’ve been sacked.

Not sure why I’m posting I think I just need to hear some positive stories of people who have come out of the other side of this. I don’t think I want to work in the NHS any longer. I’m trying to see this as an opportunity. But I’m scared too. Not sure if relationships is the right place to post, but any advice would be great.

Good luck for your interview 🍀

Zofloramummy · 23/08/2018 12:47

Just back from my interview. It was a panel of three. I think it went well and they are letting everyone know this afternoon 😱

Thinking of you, fingers crossed :)

Zofloramummy · 23/08/2018 13:28

Thank you! I’m literally watching my phone and reading MN. It’s a massive pay cut but with tax credits and some lifestyle adjustments it should be fine.

I’m hopeful but trying not to get too excited. It’s term time school hours which would be perfect

I got offered the job!! Subject to references. Contacted my ex boss to inform her and she said well done. I’m hoping that means she will be generous with her reference rather than overly critical.

Congratulations - well done that is awesome! Whilst the lifestyle adjustments may mean temporary eekness, the joy of your mental health and wellbeing being restored will surely outweigh the downsides... I presume you will start in a couple of weeks?

OllyBJolly · 23/08/2018 21:12

Congratulations!

Zofloramummy · 23/08/2018 21:15

3rd of September start date. But I can walk to my new job so won’t be travelling 40 odd miles a day, won’t need so much child care either. So that’s a cost saving straight away!

Yes I’m going to have to economise a bit but I with packed lunches, no take away coffee and no professional fees to pay I think it should (fingers crossed) work out ok.

It was the first interview I’ve had in over ten years and I’m just so chuffed to be offered the post.

Well done op

Zofloramummy · 23/08/2018 21:18

And yes I am beyond relieved at how robustly I have managed the situation in the last few weeks. I haven’t taken a downslide mentally, if anything I’ve found more strength and resilience.

I think this new job will allow me to have the time to develop really positive relationships and see them through in the long term. To be honest my old job had started to feel like a production line and I was very dissatisfied.

Congratulations!! Fantastic news and well done on your hard work

MaverickSnoopy · 24/08/2018 07:51

Well done OP. I think the reason you haven't let this negatively impact you is because you are stronger and you don't want them to win. You wanted to win and you are doing so well. Before you know it you'll have been in the new job for 6 months and will be settled in.

QueJamones · 24/08/2018 18:36

Congratulations! Fabulous new start. Xx

Zofloramummy · 24/08/2018 20:45

Thanks everyone! I’ve bought a few simple trousers and t shirt type tops today. Had my offer letter through. Exciting times!

Zofloramummy · 03/09/2018 17:23

Thank you all for you kind messages. I’ve had my induction today and everyone seems really nice. I’m going to providing one to one support for a student. My contract is until Easter at the moment but potentially could be longer (hopefully!).

I don’t know why but I was doing a bit of shopping for back to school stuff earlier in town and I started feeling quite emotional. Upset but I don’t understand why? I’m excited about this new challenge but maybe I’m unconsciously grieving for my old job? God knows but hopefully it’ll pass.

How's the new job going @Zofloramummy?

I hope it's working well for you and dc, and bet it feels good not to have all that commuting!
