It depends on the context whether this is OK. If my DH is dressing like a tramp then I’ll tell him so and it doesn’t make me abusive. And on S&B we frequently get asked “is this a nice dress?” and reply “if you’re in your seventies maybe!” Or “my mother would say that was too much of an old lady outfit”.

If (big if) this is the only questionable comment that your DH makes and there are no other problems I’d get over to S&B with “this is the sort of thing I wear, this is my age, what do you reckon?” Add a photo of a couple of your most frequenctly worn outfits.

TheGirlWhoWasntThere · 21/04/2018 12:18

Tell him it's granny chic!

You should dress however you like and feel comfortable.

HazelBite · 21/04/2018 12:19

The only garments that can possibly make you look elderly are a fleece, polyester slacks, and a beige/grey/pastel raincoat/anorak.
If you don't posess any of those you are ok
PS Don't shop at Bon Marche!

My DP said the same thing ( not in a nasty way) and he is right. It’s given me a wake up call to make the most of what I have. I have my old age to dress old. So might as well dress more my own age now while I still can! I’m going from old to funky and I’m excited!

Bluntness100 · 21/04/2018 12:20

It's hard to know if he's being harsh or not, what do you wear? What kind of clothes and how old are you?

And why do you want to wear dresses? Is that becayse you think younger women wear dresses, or you just like them?

Bluntness100 · 21/04/2018 12:22

The only garments that can possibly make you look elderly are a fleece, polyester slacks, and a beige/grey/pastel raincoat/anorak

That's not true and fairly offensive to the elderly 🤣

Plenty of clothes can make folks look like they are dressing a lot older than their age.

Crinkle77 · 21/04/2018 12:24

Depends how it was said. Was it in a jokey way about a particular item of clothing or was he deadly serious?

springydaff · 21/04/2018 12:25

"this elderly woman"?? Hmm

HazelBite · 21/04/2018 12:26

Bluntness I can comment I am elderly 9mid 60's)

happypoobum · 21/04/2018 12:30

Is this the tip of the iceberg or was he half joking?

What do you normally wear?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/04/2018 12:31

If you don't dress like an old lady what's the issue? Tell him to fuck off.

nemno · 21/04/2018 12:32

But the current crop of dresses are a bit old lady. So it depends what he is talking about. If you are just into current fashion then it is a reasonable comment as long as it is an observation not a criticism.

Tinkobell · 21/04/2018 12:39

This has got to be an excuse to go SHOPPING! i hope you have a joint account?
I once had to pick my DH for dressing badly...to be fair ....he did look completely shambolic!

HazelBite I am early 60s and was discussing this with my adult DD. We agreed there seems to be a 'uniform' many older women don, comprising said poly slacks, dull, pale anoraks and Bon Marche blouses or 'safe' pastel tops. I get that some people just want easy clothes and don't care to stand out, but it IS an ageing look, and I can't imagine myself suddenly deciding this is want I want to wear - or does it just happen organically, like grey hair and 'tache growth? Shock

Ryder63 · 21/04/2018 12:50

*want to wear

Ryder63 · 21/04/2018 12:52

Fuckity! 'WHAT I WANT TO WEAR' Grin

Lweji · 21/04/2018 12:52

But the current crop of dresses are a bit old lady.

Very true.

This is a golden opportunity for him to take you shopping and for you to test his taste.

Dobbythesockelf · 21/04/2018 13:00

Surely it depends on what you wear now? There does seem to be a lot of dresses around lately that are a bit ageing in my opinion but if you like them then it's nobodies business what you wear. Do you want to change how you dress? You shouldn't change just cause he says so.

Notevilstepmother · 21/04/2018 13:03

Bon Marche have actually upped their game recently. I went with my mum and I was pleasantly very surprised to see it has been de-frumped quite a bit. Some of the shapeless boring stuff has been replaced with tailored flattering cuts. Maybe they have a new designer or something? It’s never going to be topshop, Grin but they seem to have workwear as well as retirement wear.

Ryder63 · 21/04/2018 13:08

but they seem to have workwear as well as retirement wear

That's because they recognise that retirement age gallops over the horizon as soon as we approach it! Grin

Thanks, Tory voters Sad

I was in a restaurant the other day and saw a woman in her 60s. She had short white hair - a chic cut, with very faint pink highlights - and wore a burnt orange raincoat, grey jeans and (I think) magenta suede shoe-boots. Not everyone's choice - at any age - but the shapes and colours suited her, and the overall effect was stunning .

IF, IF, IF your DH intended to be hurtful, then perhaps he needs to stop thinking in ageist and sexist stereotypes. There are some very stylish 'old ladies' around. And, as others have already said, why can't we dress in the way we want - however that might be?

expatinscotland · 21/04/2018 13:23

Tell him to get knotted.

'Very true.

This is a golden opportunity for him to take you shopping and for you to test his taste.'

She doesn't need his taste, she can go shopping and buy her own clothes without a man's approval.

HazelBite · 21/04/2018 13:27

I'm intrigued as to what the Op wears that is so aging to her?
