Off-putting photos on dating sites!

of course there's the obvious ones - in full motor cycle gear.

But why the ones showing them when they're younger?

e.g. 50 year old man (not terrible looking), a few photos, fair enough. Then one - when he's 35 i.e. 15 years ago. Why would I want to see that? Some men even put photos of themselves when they were children Confused.

Sometimes I wonder ...

Still, I guess it saves time ...

I have never OLD but I don't think I would find the sports gear an issue. OK, so I would probably reject a fisherman (boring) football fan (hate football) cyclist (too fit and would spend all weekend out on his bike) but I wouldn't have a problem with a bloke in ski gear or a rugby setting.

I would also appreciate pictures with their dogs/cats/horses but probably not lizards or tropical fish.

RainyApril · 19/02/2018 14:32

I feel like the action shots are probably just trying to show that they've done some interesting things, surely acceptable alongside other photos where you can clearly see his face?

There's such a long list of photo type here - no dc, friends, pets, cycling, tents, safaris, alcoholic drinks, football, angling, action shots, kilts, selfies, topless, owls!

We need an 'acceptable photo' thread for us novices now, if there's anything left.

EbonyJade · 19/02/2018 14:47

Acceptable photos are those showing the man dressed (in clothes), with his full face showing, preferably smiling.

No mates, women, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, toilets, massive fish, or drugged big cats in the photo.

Smart fashionable clothes, a decent haircut & nice teeth with a pleasant smile are a bonus.

Action shots are ok if his face is visible, pets are allowed as it lets us know what to expect (eg a big Rottweiler is not going to mix with my cat).

No lying about age & photos should be less than a year old.

Ofthread · 19/02/2018 15:53

Can the man be dressed in full Team Sky cycling outfit?

Ofthread · 19/02/2018 15:59

Fucking owl holders and fish holders. Can they not get their own website? What would be the stereotypical female equivalent of it? A massive stand of gross red velvet cupcakes? If I ever do OLD I'll be surprised if I ever even go on a date. NO WAY am I spending time I could be on Netflix/Mumsnet etc. with a fish holder.

motherofyorkies · 19/02/2018 16:03

just marking my place.

I've nothing to add, but LOVE this thread!

RainyApril · 19/02/2018 16:32

Found this on Reddit, basically moaning about women's old profiles. I'm taking this seriously!

Jmc13 · 19/02/2018 16:35

I love this thread, fairly new to OLD but have definitely been put off by moody bed selfies, when you can't tell who they are or when they have a lot of pics with other women. I also have seen some guys who claimed to be much younger than they looked but (naively assumed they just had a hard lifeGrin)

I'm also really intrigued to hear what are good/bad pics for a woman to post. I've never used any with snapchat filters (I have them but for fun) as kind of felt like it was false advertising??

RainyApril · 19/02/2018 16:46

According to that thread on reddit, top hates are group shots, cats, 'fur babies', sunglasses, filters, hiding your weight and doing activities that they don't care about.

They also object to laundry lists of requirements, cliches such as 'live laugh love', 'if you can't handle me at my worst you don't deserve me at my best', banging on about your friends, wine or how much you enjoy life/laughing, not including enough information to spark a conversation, saying you like travelling when really you just go on holiday, saying you like the outdoors and much more.

We're all as bad as each other. Wish I lived in the days of written invites and ballrooms.

Browtox · 19/02/2018 17:08

I’m interested in the fish. Has anyone ever swooned over a mans fish handling skillz ?

ilovebutterflies · 19/02/2018 17:09

Not once have I saw a man with occupation listed as pilot which didn’t have his profile pic of him in his work uniform. it really puts me off it’s as if they are relying on their sexy job to pull a woman.

cod · 19/02/2018 17:11

Pilots notorious shaggers through

Catinthebath · 19/02/2018 17:19

I think the Marilyn quote is something like “if you can’t handle me at my worst you don’t deserve me at my best”. Marilyn was a goddess so she could get away with it. When I first joined tinder I changed gender so I could see what other women were saying about themselves. Some seriously high maintenance women out there

fredericapotterslawyer · 19/02/2018 17:55

Ones taken with their children, where they've redacted the child's face with black marker, like something out of The Ring. If you don't want your child's face on there...just pick another photo!

Also, men who say 'I hate drama' in their profiles. This is code for 'I hate being held accountable for my actions'.

TinselAngel · 19/02/2018 17:58

@Time40 "Owl Holders" display the following characteristics (not a comprehensive list)

Also have pictures at top of hills/ mountains
Often work in IT
Outdoorsy- like cycling and climbing etc
No imagination
Often wear bobble hats

Zaphodsotherhead · 19/02/2018 18:10

Rainy - I read that as 'topless owls' and I thought, 'how can you have a topless owl?

Bluesheep8 · 19/02/2018 19:08

I misread it as OWL HOWLERS !!!

isseywithcats · 19/02/2018 20:01

when i was OLD there was this one picture of a guy in his kitchen and it wasnt him that caught my attention, it was the every single work surface in his kitchen covered in rubbish, dirty plates, empty tins and packets, his kitchen worktops looked like something out of the television program hoarders, if thats what his kitchen looked like god knows what the rest of the house was like

VetOnCall · 19/02/2018 20:32

We did this recently on the dating thread. Tragically common no-nos in photos (from a female perspective) include:

Posing with/sitting on/swimming with any kind of captive wild animal
Holding a fish
Photos of kids
Memes/shit quotes
Only photos taken from the back/from a distance/wearing a bike helmet
Only selfies
Selfies that look like prison mugshots
Car selfies
Bathroom mirror selfies
Bed selfies
Alcohol in every photo
Neck down bare torso shots
'Artfully arranged towel around waist' /pulling down waistband of boxers shots - usually in moody black and white
Work ID photo
Group photos - they're never the fit one
Wedding photos (their wedding)
Photos with their ex clearly cut out
Photos with scantily clad women e.g. track girls/club dancers/Hooters waitresses
Any photo taken on a lads' holiday
Giving the finger
Tongue sticking out
Snapchat filters
Really obvious Instagram filters

I don't mind photos with pets though. I have dogs and have a photo of me with them on my profile. I'm very outdoorsy so I like skiing/cycling/up a mountain photos as long as there's at least one where you can actually see what they look like.

RainyApril · 19/02/2018 20:39

Topless owlsGrin

RosaDeZoett · 19/02/2018 20:42

The genuinely nicest goodest kindest sweetest man I ever knew is a Fish holder. Ya'll may be missing out. (I don't know if he does Old, but his old Facebook profile photo was Man with Fish.... He loves to fish!)

MozzchopsThirty · 19/02/2018 20:48

I went for a man with a fish
He was a lovebomber and shit in bed 💁🏼‍♀️

RosaDeZoett · 19/02/2018 20:50

No this one was AMAZING in bed Smile I don't know what love bombing is.... But it sounds quite nice, no?

GottadoitGottadoit · 19/02/2018 21:10
