Vasectomy, what to expect?

Oddsocksforeveryone · 30/01/2018 08:13

DH is having a vasectomy on Friday. He's booked a few days off work planning to stay in bed mostly I think, wants to take ibuprofen all day every day up until the procedure. I don't have any experience with this and he isn't doing any research so I just wondered if anyone can tell me what to expect as far as a how he'll be once he's had the procedure anything that I need to do or get in, that sort of thing?
We have four DC including a toddler and baby so if he'll be out of action for a few days/weeks i could do with planning.

He's compared it to my c sections, but told me is a 20 min procedure and he'll walk out of the building so I'm unsure. He's not doing any preparation so I assume I at least need to get painkillers in. Paracetamol? Codeine? Any help appreciated.

(I have those hot/cold packs in)

My DH had the snip back in 2010, and it really isn't comparable to having a c-section! All being well, he'll probably be out of action for a couple of days, tender for a week or so. I think they advise to wear underwear that will provide some support, so no loose boxers.

Isadora2007 · 30/01/2018 08:26

It’s NOTHING like a c section, what a fool he is. That is major abdominal surgery cutting through layers of muscle etc with a serious recovery time. His is cutting through paper thin skin and a teeny wee vessel. No comparison at all.
He can lift and carry things afterwards. He may be tender and he will likely be swollen. Sex will be unlikely for a week possibly two. He may have some blood in the ejaculate the first few times.
If he gets an infection it will become hot and tender, get checked if it happens.
But seriously. He should be up and normal by Sunday or else he is milking it majorly. Big Baby.

How old is your DH? I had a vasectomy when I was 30, and as you state, walked out to be picked up 20 minutes later. Swelling and bruising are to be expected, the pain for me was comparable to the ache you still have about 10 mins after a hard blow to the knackers (which lasted a couple of days). Personally, I carried on as normal, just a little slower.
Dig out his biggest pants (and jogging bottoms!), fend off any small children from jumping on him, It'll be fine.
(My partner had two c-sections, and not in any universe are the two comparable!)

Oddsocksforeveryone · 30/01/2018 09:32

Thanks everyone.
@sussexcoast he's 33. Thanks for the joggers reminder, his clothes are too tight at the moment maybe I should go get some bigger (He's in denial about needing bigger)
I will prepare for drama but keep in mind it shouldn't be too bad really.

My exh had his done at am. We dtd at bedtime!! Blush.

picklemepopcorn · 30/01/2018 09:37

Nothing to it. Very rare for any significant complications. He'll walk like john Wayne for a day or two. Some proper briefs will help. The doctor that did DH's took great delight in showing me the piece he was snipping out! Honestly, it's a breeze.

picklemepopcorn · 30/01/2018 09:37

More like a trip to the dentist- having a tooth out.

dementedpixie · 30/01/2018 09:40

Dh bought some tighter fitting pants rather than the boxers he usually wears. Was lightly bruised for a wee while and got the occasional twinge for a week or so. Said it wasn't as bad as he thought it would be. He went back to work after 2 days ofg

coldcanary · 30/01/2018 09:41

It’s nothing like a c section! He should be able to walk out fine even if he will look like he’s lost his horse Grin
Tight undies, loose pants and ibuprofen afterwards are a must and watch out for signs of infection (smell gives it away). That’s it going off DH’s experience. He was back in work the following day and felt quite tender for a few days but it didn’t last long at all.
(He did struggle to drive the following morning and had to get a lift to work but he improved enough so that he could have driven home IYSWIM.)

coldcanary · 30/01/2018 09:43

Should add that DH is prone to a bit of drama llama behaviour when it comes to his health but he breezed through this with no issue at all.

AuntFidgetWonkhamStrongNajork · 30/01/2018 09:48

Dh walked home from his - about a mile and a half on the Saturday morning. And was at work (lab based) on the Monday morning. All he wanted was supportive pants.

I'm not sure about taking ibuprofen - a friend recently bruised some ribs and was told not to take it www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-or-bruised-ribs/

Frith1975 · 30/01/2018 09:58

Like a C section!!!

My ex was fine, dtd the following day and was back at work Monday (had it done on the Friday).

The bruising was spectacular though.

Flatbellyfella · 30/01/2018 10:57

I walked in to the Surgeons private home theatre, & walked out 20 mins later, it was one tiny injection & totally painless procedure, I was back at work the next day with no problems whatsoever.

SayYouCare · 30/01/2018 11:08

No more babies? Grin

HidingFromTheWorld · 30/01/2018 11:09

My DH had his done at a GP surgery and was back to normal in terms of activities and movement later the same day.

I however had to be taken outside and given some water as I nearly fainted at the (rather graphic) post-procedure description of what had just taken place, mainly because the equipment was still laid out and my imagination did the rest for me!

paap1975 · 30/01/2018 11:11

Friend of mine had his in the morning and worked in the afternoon (office job).

RaySwan · 30/01/2018 11:11

Hi. I agree it is nowhere comparable to a vasectomy although I had a bit of trauma of being a wimp and the local anaesthetic not working on one half of the procedure. Apart from the ptsd I was back at work the same day. Good luck!

picklemepopcorn · 30/01/2018 11:13

I watched! Mainly to hold dh's hand as he was pretty nervous.

FizzyGreenWater · 30/01/2018 11:40

Like a C section Grin Grin Grin

OP's he building up to a MAJOR attempt at milking it. Show him this thread. It's more akin to having a tooth out. Sorry, OP's DH.

romany4 · 30/01/2018 12:31

My DH was 28 when he had his.
He did have a hell of a lot of swelling and bruising after and couldn't sit down for a couple of days. But he took painkillers and laid on the sofa till it eased.
He'll be fine

Mishappening · 30/01/2018 12:35

What a big baby!! No wonder you don't want any more! Grin

Singlikemiranda · 30/01/2018 12:36

Mines going tomorrow! It was meant to be today but got pushed back. We are abroad and he has been told he is not allowed to ejaculate at all for 4 weeks! He is going to be a nightmare!

Ickyockycocky · 30/01/2018 12:40

I think, wants to take ibuprofen all day every day up until the procedure

Have I understood this correctly? He wants to take ibuprofen before the vasectomy? If so, this is a really bad idea.

Try googling ibuprofen before surgery.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 30/01/2018 12:40

Dh had his three years ago at a gp surgery. Was told to wear tight briefs not boxers for support. He was advised to spend that day on the couch and then get back to normal as much as pain would allow from the next day.
He walked out the dr was a bit sore the rest of the day and achy for a couple of days. He was training for a marathon at the time and was back out running within a week. Think he got it done on Thursday or Friday and was back at work on Monday absolutely fine.

NoStraightEdges · 30/01/2018 12:41

DH had his yesterday. They gave him a jock strap to wear and recommended supportive pants. Shame they didn't tell him before hand really!

He's been tender but ok-paracetamol and ibuprofen are all he's needed for the pain.

No aftercare instructions at all, so I went on the NHS pages to see what they say. No heavy lifting for a week, but certainly didn't say no ejaculating for weeks, miranda!
