Vasectomy, what to expect?

Oddsocksforeveryone · 30/01/2018 08:13

DH is having a vasectomy on Friday. He's booked a few days off work planning to stay in bed mostly I think, wants to take ibuprofen all day every day up until the procedure. I don't have any experience with this and he isn't doing any research so I just wondered if anyone can tell me what to expect as far as a how he'll be once he's had the procedure anything that I need to do or get in, that sort of thing?
We have four DC including a toddler and baby so if he'll be out of action for a few days/weeks i could do with planning.

He's compared it to my c sections, but told me is a 20 min procedure and he'll walk out of the building so I'm unsure. He's not doing any preparation so I assume I at least need to get painkillers in. Paracetamol? Codeine? Any help appreciated.

(I have those hot/cold packs in)

Get in some frozen peas! They helped dh no end after his.

Like others have said, he'll need to take it easy for a couple of days afterwards, but it's hardly comparable to a major op like a c-section.

He should avoid heavy lifting for a while afterwards (can't remember how long, get him to ask the doc) because it can lead to one or both testicles filling up with blood Shock

elliejjtiny · 30/01/2018 12:54

It's nothing like a c-section. Although from the way my dh milked it you would think it was! He was in bed for 48 hours and off work/not driving for 2 weeks.

Changedname3456 · 30/01/2018 12:59

What a wuss! I had mine done late thirties. Nothing much to it other than needing a top up of local on one side (I tried to tough it out until the surgeon noticed my death grip on the chair’s arm!)

There can be side effects but he’ll be pretty unlucky to get any. I had bouncy kids at the time so I was careful around them for a day or so but that’s about it.

category12 · 30/01/2018 13:08

My ex had his done and I got to watch Grin. Smells like bacon. (No, more like horses being shod really Grin)

He had a bit of bruising and soreness, but recovered quickly, no problem.

Nothing like major surgery.

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 30/01/2018 13:34

Dh wasn’t told about no ejaculate for 4 weeks they said leave it a week but that was because it was an open wound no stitch in it in fact they were positively evangelical about getting back on it and ejaculating as much as possible before sample time to make sure it was clear.

Seadragonusgiganticusmaximus · 30/01/2018 13:36

Yep. Pretty straightforward. Done on Friday afternoon, was a total lazy bastard and milked it for all it was worth took it easy over the weekend, back at work on Monday.

Also needed a top up of local on one side. Fortunately it was the second side or I might not have known and tried to tough it out.

Supportive underpants important.

Main side effect for me was a new car for DW.

ColinsVeryJolly · 30/01/2018 13:39

DH took it easy the day of the op and was back at work the next day and just avoided any heavy lifting.

picklemepopcorn · 30/01/2018 14:18

I think he might have misunderstood Miranda. He won't be reliably sterile, so shouldn't give up contraception, but I'm pretty sure it's ok to ejaculate!

Oddsocksforeveryone · 30/01/2018 14:24

This is such a relief, I was worried that I wasn't going to be sympathetic enough.
I've got PND and maybe PTSD after the last birth 3 months ago which was my 4th section, dc2's birthday is next week and I've his party to plan etc I'm under a lot of pressure/stress so adding caring for DH to the list I was basically worried I was going to end up being mean to him by underestimating what he's going through.
Fingers crossed it will be simple and straightforward. Thank you all

Seconding the peas here, just get a few bags of the dirt cheap ones so they can be binned/composted.

He'll be absolutely fine, here are some "manly" Flowers for him : )

pudding21 · 30/01/2018 15:01

Like a C Section; pahahahhahaha! err not in the slightest.

I worked with a guy, had the snip in the morning was doing a night shift that night cos we were short staffed (he was a nurse). He walked a bit gingerly and looked a bit sheepish, but that was it!

Singlikemiranda · 30/01/2018 15:45

I will get clarification tomorrow! Like I say, we aren't in the UK so it might be different here but I think he will be very happy to here he can ejaculate sooner than 4 weeks! Grin

loopylou6 · 30/01/2018 15:55

Miranda, my dh was told to ejaculate as much as possible?

Oddsocks, my dh came home and cooked himself his tea, he was very lucky in the way he didn't bruise or swell hardley at all. Just get him some supportive pants and tell him to watch for any toddlers diving on him.

Isadora2007 · 30/01/2018 15:59

Asking on this thread if you all got checked (or DHs checked?) for sterility after?
We haven’t as the procedure for doing so was such a faff. Five years later no babies so I’m guessing it worked! 🙈

category12 · 30/01/2018 16:15

Yeah, wrong end of the stick there, I'm sure, miranda: no unprotected sex for a few weeks for sure, but flushing out the sperm by ejaculating was advised - something like 24 times I seem to recall Hmm. Not all at once, I presume. Grin

Ruddygreattiger2016 · 30/01/2018 16:24

My ex drove to and from the clinic, said it ached a bit but was back in work the next day and that was that. Dtd few days later and said it felt no different at all. He certainly wasn't a drama queen about it.

loopylou6 · 30/01/2018 16:27

Isadora, yes, he had to wank into a pot and take it the hospital, they then check sperm count.

MeganChips · 30/01/2018 17:41

A c-section indeed. He just wants you to run after him for a few weeks!

DH has his done with no problems. I had a puncture the day afterwards and he had to come and change the tyre for me because I couldn’t move the nuts - lots of leg pumping action.

He did have pretty impressive swelling though because he ignored the advice to wear tight pants.

Steeley113 · 30/01/2018 17:48

He’s milking it. It’s a local anaesthetic for one, so the same as what they inject in your gums at the dentist. It’s a tiny cut and he’ll walk out after 20 minutes and be right as rain with a small amount of swelling. You will not need to ‘care’ for him nor will he need days in bed 🙄

ExtraSpecial1 · 30/01/2018 17:50

Couldn't move the nuts....oh that has made me chuckle! @MeganChips

Dh had one a few years back, I watched as I'm a vet nurse and obviously vasectomies are unheard of in my world...its castration! He was a bit tender for a few days but that was it. He took regular painrelief, I'd advise getting him some otc paracetamol with codeine in just for the first night and next day and take ibuprofen.

Do not let him take ibuprofen before the op as it increases the likelihood of bleeding and therefore bruising. Two paracetamols an hour before would be worth it though.

cheeseismydownfall · 30/01/2018 19:02

My DH had his done in the morning and then drove himself straight to work and carried on as normal. He was a bit sore for a few days but just got on with it tbh. Your DH needs to get a grip!

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 30/01/2018 19:24

Dh took ages to get the all clear he kept getting letters back saying he wasn’t clear yet. He eventually had to do a sample and bring it in fresh to be tested. It turns out he still is producing but non motive so he is sterile yippeee.

SkaPunkPrincess · 30/01/2018 19:47

My Husband is as tough as they come but he ended up with a bad infection and he was in A LOT of pain.
All of you taking the piss are not being very kind really. You have no idea how much it's going to hurt until it's done. I knew DH wasn't milking it his pain threshold is very high.

themueslicamel · 30/01/2018 20:03

It's fine unless of course you have complications like any surgery.

Having a cancerous bollock cut off was so much worse!

Bufferingkisses · 30/01/2018 20:11

One little tip, assuming he's not on other medication is to take arnica tablets a few days before and after. They can help with bruising.

Tell him even the men on here are laughing at the c-section analogy Grin
