My dear old mum said to me "Do you ever look back on your childhood and think what appalling food you were given?"

Bless her, she really wans't the best cook in the world and this seems to be bothering her in her old age. It made me wonder what we will look back on and stress about regarding our kid's childhood .

ooh liver and bacon casserole
bloody lovely

Aefondkiss · 25/04/2007 19:40

the worst would be turkey burgers

the worst my dad ever made us eat?

dandelion stew

the best?

lots of home made food, bread, eggs from our own hens, ducks and geese, yoghurt made from(our) goat's milk... freshly picked fruit made into pies and jam, rosehip syrup, even home made wine... did I appreciate it then?

I feel like I am failing my children

Whn my Mum was in hospital one time my Dad cooked us tripe and onions (he'd seen it in the butcher's and got all nostalgic). My brother and I tried the tiniest bit and refused to et any more and my Dad kept chewing with determination then put his knife and fork down and said "I remember now why I've not had this since I left home...it's disgusting." We had pancake rolls from the Chinese takeaway instead

DrMarthaMcMoo · 25/04/2007 19:44

I love liver but my fusspot dh and kids won't eat it.

lapsedrunner · 25/04/2007 19:45

DrMarthaMcMoo · 25/04/2007 19:46

Grosvenor pie! Used to love that, except the jelly bit round the side. i still shudder when i think of my mum's stew and the fatty gristle we had to swallow or face a severe reprimand from dad. No wonder i turned veggie when i was 15!

My Mum is a great cook. Although she ruined Christmas lunch because she is losing her marbles but that is a whole other thread.

We at ereally well as kids, but we all fondly remember how when we had what meals on what nights became a pattern - to this day Thursday night is synonymous with Spaghetti Bolognese

We used to have a cookie jar where mum kept those fin size packs of choc and smarties and that was usually our pudding. We would spend hours me and my two sisters, lining up our smarties after tea and swapping them with each other. Best pudding as a treat was angel delight with smarties on the top, or icecream with mars bar sauce (YUMBLE!!) or Treacle Stodge!!

Whenever we asked what was for tea Mum would say "it's mind your own business with wait and see for pudding!"

I love my mum.

I still shudder when I think what went into all those early 80s Birds Eye "burgers" my Gran fed me every Wednesday. Every time I forget something I think its the onset of CJD.

Aefondkiss · 25/04/2007 20:00

kidneys >boak

Tommy · 25/04/2007 20:03

we ate fairly healthily I think - my Mum is a good cook and would try us on things like chilli before it became fashionable but, I dod rememebr when I did my cooks badhe at guides and the tester being really snobby about my menu choice which was sausages (with mash and vegetables IIRC) - she told me that sausages weren't "proper food" and what about a lamb chop or something - we never had things like lamb chops! Always mince, stewing meat - stuff like that. But theye were 8 of us and not much money so I guess that's why.

lapsedrunner · 25/04/2007 20:05

..and what did you call that square slice of pork pie with a slice of hard boiled egg in it..?

Found it by Googling, it was called a Gala Pie

Botbot · 25/04/2007 20:34

We had chips with everything, and dessert was always two Kitkats or Club Oranges or, as a real treat, Angel Delight. It was the seventies, in my mum's defence. Mind you, dad suddenly saw the light around 1982 and suddenly it was curries and pasta and he took over the cooking ? my little mates must have thought we were really posh. He still does all the cooking now, and I've ended up with a dp who's a good cook too.

Lullabyloo · 25/04/2007 20:37

oh sodding angel delight...a different blardy flavour every night with sprinkles or mandarins or dream topping or tip top....yeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

Swizzler · 25/04/2007 20:42

Fray Bentos pies
ham in tins
frozen veg always (esp hated those nasty dry broad beans)
cooking with lard

and I grew up in the 80s so there was no excuse

they eat much better now Dad's got into cooking.

star1976 · 25/04/2007 21:14

My dad still won't eat Spag Bol or pasta of any type even now, it's 'foreign muck' apparently and not real food!

Used to love my mum's Gypsy Toast (or eggy bread as I have since heard it called) and do it for my DD now!

If we asked what we were having for dinner (tea up north) we got told 'shit with sugar on'! Charming!

Pollyanna · 25/04/2007 21:18

Oh yes, faggots, luncheon meat, hazlet (sp?), salad cream, potted beef, angel delight.

Then my mum went veggie and so did we - she wasn't a very good cook and we had alot of weird lentil dishes and quiches. She was like Wendy Craig in butterflies. (we had to slice the custard frequently )

star1976 · 25/04/2007 21:27

Oh salad cream and cucumber sandwiches! Lovely!
