Any hotel receptionists out there who can help, please?

Firstly, is a room reservation always confirmed by sending an email to the person who booked?
And
In that email, if the room has a queen bed as standard do you put the number of guests down as 2 as standard as well, even if the guest has not mentioned a second guest? In other words, if it says two on the booking ref is it definite 2 ppl stayed there?

If someone requested a double then we used to book 2 people just to make sure no one would swap the person to a single room without thinking.

I am talking years ago when it was all done in paper and pen though!

I would have listed 2 adults only if 2 adults were booked. Prices are usually per room though rather then per guest.

I don't think it matters what size the bed is, if there were two guests it would say two guest. I might be completely wrong but I'm pretty sure the hotel would need to know exact numbers of guests in case of a fire etc.

I travel for work. The auto confirm emails often say 2 people when it;s just me. Think that is the default in many places.

I was one (and a manager of one) for many years in 5* hotels, don't despair OP, hotel reservations can be surprisingly inaccurate, queen rooms can default to 2 guests automatically, emails can or cannot be sent, wrong profiles can be picked up etc etc

If you've found an email though it is quite unlikely that's person has not actually booked a room but it can happen...

I'm not a receptionist but if I go away with work I book a double room. I would assume they believe 2 people are there even though there are not but I don't know how it works. When I've booked a room for me and DP I can't remember. I think it depends on the booking system. I remember clicking '2 guests' sometimes. Sorry that's useless advice

When I worked on a hotel, if a room was requested, we would put 2 adults as standard, just in case two did turn up and there weren't enough towels in the room. That was the only difference between a single and a double - two towels would be put in to a double.

Even now when I book hotels for my boss, I put two adults because it's no extra cost but means he gets a towel for a shower in the evening and one for a shower in the morning.

God, I hope his wife never sees the reservations and thinks he's having a secret affair because I'm greedy with towels 🙈

They're really not that bothered about the detail so it could well be wrong.

Hotelier here. We only sell breakfast-inclusive rates, so yes, the number of guests is enquired at the time of booking, and the appropriate rate applied.

If a second guest checks in, the number is amended at the desk.

It helps for accuracy in counting numbers for breakfast and billing.

Check what's included in the rate.

I'd ring the hotel and ask them directly as different places are likely to handle things differently.

No-ones going to be able to give you a definitive answer. I'm away for work right now and have "double rooms" marked as for 2 when its just me. And they routinely give me 2 keys.

At least one hotel we booked into on holiday only sent email for confirmation on request.

I have been away for business in the past and they have booked me as 2 when there is definitely only one of me.

If it's worrying you just phone the hotel.

I went away last week with my two dc and all the paperwork had '4' on it even though there were 3 of us. Which they knew and had all the details of. 4 people cpiod have slept in the room so I guess that's what it was.

I work in a hotel. Often it says two and only one person arrives for the reasons said above. So it isn't conclusive.

Indeed, not remotely concerning of itself. I always book for two people as it's the same price and I don't want to inadvertently get landed with a small crappy room.

Do you have access to his emails then if you saw the confirmation? The only thing I can think of is to call and say that you and your husband stayed and would like a copy of the invoice. If he paid room only it won't help but if it is somewhere you have pay separately for breakfasts etc...

They may smell a rat if you ask it to be sent to your email. May still do it though.

I can see why the booking got your spider senses tingling, but on its own it's quite explainable...is there any more to it, has anything else made you suspicious?

Are you asking because you suspect your other half has been up to something? If so, just ask him/her!
