What's your thoughts? (100% asking for a friend)

What would you think to be the "5th Wife"

Your friend has lost her mind. Ask her why she has to get married so soon. After all, if it is a solid relationship it will last no matter what. My suspicion is that he is a lovebomber and she's so blitzed from this guy she can't even see straight. Also, ask her about her money. Good grief, this is awful.

"A triumph of Hope over Experience"

Wordsaremything · 31/07/2017 16:05

A friend of my parents, a man named Mr Firth, married four times. Wife number 4 was known of course, as the Fourth of FirthGrin

VikingVolva · 31/07/2017 16:08

Is he 4x divorced?

Or serial widower? Any in the bath?

AgentProvocateur · 31/07/2017 16:11

Depends if the first four died in mysterious circumstances.... Wink

RatRolyPoly · 31/07/2017 16:16

His track record would attest that one thing he ain't, and that's "in it for the long haul".

VeryFoolishFay · 31/07/2017 16:19

Well, I'm wife no 4, and we've been together 12 years now and don't see any imminent problems. I think he has finally grown up and we potter on quite happily. He didn't have any children previously and I think that made things slightly easier.

tararabumdeay · 31/07/2017 16:20

Depends what they're both taking into the legal agreement of marriage (it's not about love). If she'll be better or worse of when he moves on either to No6 or that great white chapel in the sky.

Loopytiles · 31/07/2017 16:20

Is he rich?

ExplodedCloud · 31/07/2017 16:26

I wonder if it's my xh. He'd be 51 now. And has ex wives...

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 31/07/2017 16:27

Honestly, I'd be very sceptical but people said similar things when my good friend married for the third time in her early 30s..... Neither divorce was her fault or because she was/is rubbish at marriage. Both cheated on her.

I'd be judging it based on individual circumstances - although him leaving wife 4 for her doesn't sound great!

Anatidae · 31/07/2017 16:28

Well he's an optimist if nothing else.

BubbleBed · 31/07/2017 16:31

If DP and I marry (we've been together 4 years) I will be his 3rd wife, he my second husband. We both married in V. Early twenties, and divorced a few years later. However, he remarried when he was early 30s and divorced again a few years later - he admits now he shouldn't have married second time and felt pressured to show she meant as much as the first etc. He's now 40, and we are still a way off saying vows.

Rushing from one to another doesn't sound great. Has she been married many times before? What makes her think this time is different?

mummyretired · 31/07/2017 16:36

Giving up on three here, I'd say no - have a commitment ceremony, wear a ring, do whatever but no more of that official paperwork!

NotTheFordType · 31/07/2017 16:45

Is your friend perhaps feeling like she HAS to make this work, despite all evidence to the contrary, because she gave up so much to be with him?

JessicaEccles · 31/07/2017 17:33

Is he Sean Bean? Because I can see the attraction :-)

Decsbetterhalf · 31/07/2017 18:11

He is wealthy. Carries this alleged "charisma"

I hope she will be ok - for me, I would run a mile

Ahh now it makes sense, he smells of Eau de Cash. Grin

Loopytiles · 31/07/2017 18:26

Will there be a pre-nup? If not she presumably thinks if it goes tits up she'll benefit financiallyz

ExplodedCloud · 31/07/2017 18:34

Wealthy? Not xh then Grin

Thebluedog · 31/07/2017 18:34

If the relationship was solid and strong and there were genuine reasons for the marriages and divorce, I'd be cautious but it wouldn't be a deal breaker. My dp has been married 3 times and we've been talking of marriage.

His 1st was the mother of his kid and he felt he had to 'do right by her. The 2nd he got pressurised into it by her and her family, there was infidelity on her part so he left, the 3rd, they fell out of love and had a mutual and amicable divorce.

By your 50s it's not unusual to have quite a few longer relationships and if you marry then it's plausible to have that many under your belt.

annandale · 31/07/2017 18:35

A friend has married 3 times, tbh many of us in the group of mates have similar numbers of LTRS, but those with a religious upbringing are more likely to go for the vows. Is he a vicar's son?

I have to say my friend is also absolutely fucking gorgeous and a high earner, intellectual and family oriented, no wonder she has men on their knees with a ring pronto whereas I went 3 years between marriages with barely a date Grin

I don't think there's anything you can say but don't be shuffled into doing things you don't agree with.

^^

That IS my friend too which is why I can't quite fathom it!

I'm a 4th wife! Nothing wrong with my DH...he's amazing Smile

Agustarella · 01/08/2017 01:35

I have the chance to become my boyfriend's fourth wife. I had no idea there were so many fourth wives about! I haven't told my parents about all the previous wives because they are still Shock at having a potential son in law who is older than they are. I haven't definitely said yes, though.
