transporting dogs in cars

I saw this on Monday outside the H., waiting for my lift, and it's stayed with me. Hope dog owners can reassure me.

Right, a blind man and his working dog were met by his taxi, an ordinary saloon with a fixed boot. The taxi driver loaded the dog into the boot and closed it. It then took a few minutes for him to settle the
man in the car. The destination was 20-30 mns away but this was rush hour, so would have been longer.

I thought that only kidnapped victims were bundled into a dark boot! but is this normal?

The taxi company, btw, has drivers with allsorts of cars, from saloons to people carriers.

The back seat could have been flipped down on the interior. Blind people are usually pretty protective of their dogs.

I've never thought it very nice but a colleague of mine used to transport his English Bull Terrier this way, and it didn't seem to mind. Years ago my primary school teacher's father also put his gun dogs in the boot of his ancient Saab, again they seemed quite happy. I'd never do it.

bikermouse1 · 09/10/2014 14:13

(sorry, thought I'd posted this in Chat)

Thanks Higgle, I'm a bit more reassured.

Cog, this was a standard saloon - no fancy flipping, I reckon :)

I'm not sure what the right solution is in a taxi - having an unrestrained dog in the car is a danger to it and the other occupants if the driver has to break very sharply (or there's a crash) - but putting the dog in a saloon boot seems very wrong. The company probably should have sent something like a hatchback, where you can remove the cover.

Dirtybadger · 09/10/2014 14:35

Wouldn't let anyone put my dog in a saloon boot...and I wouldn't think much of anyone doing it, either.

psyandsoc · 09/10/2014 14:36

I'm just wondering if the guy who was blind had no knowledge of exactly where the poor dog was being put!

DiaDuit · 09/10/2014 14:40

How do you know where the taxi was going? Confused

Also i'm pretty sure the man will have known where his dog was! It wasnt in the seated part of the taxi so where else would he have assumed it went?

psyandsoc · 09/10/2014 16:16

I mean did he know it was in the boot! Was he informed it was put there or assumed that the dog was in a estate type car.

whataboutbob · 09/10/2014 16:28

jesus christ!
dat dog really sounded like it was in a sticky situation. I wonder if dat guy even noticed were he put the blooming hound. Next time he does i will git that man.

Er yes, i know that's what you meant! He is blind not stupid. How could he not have known? Presumably he wasnt deaf and unable to speak.

Benedictinemonk · 09/10/2014 16:42

Are you sure it was an 'ordinary saloon'? A lot of minicab drivers use Skoda Octavia cars, and although these have a saloon type shape, they are, in fact, a hatchback.

Ha ha whataboutbobs son yo mama is harsh innit

bikermouse1 · 09/10/2014 18:05

I was standing right by them so heard exactly where he was going to. The car was definitely an ordinary saloon but have no idea if the blind man knew it was an enclosed boot and the taxi driver didn't say but, as Higgle remarked upthread, someone they knew put their gundogs in the boot,so....well, so I'm a bit more reassured.

Naughty step for you bob junior. Off you go and look appropriately remorseful.

livelablove · 09/10/2014 20:34

But why did he pick this thread?

ErrolTheDragon · 09/10/2014 21:35

when you think of some of the threads he might have wandered into, bobson has had a narrow escape from trauma I think. Grin

toldmywrath · 09/10/2014 21:51

Sorry OP but I'd be upset about the dog in the boot- if it's a guide dog they wear pretty good harnesses that would enable the dog to be securely strapped in via the seat belt or isofix point.
But perhaps the blind person has got a dog that is perfectly happy to travel this way-who knows/is it a neighbour & you could ask him?
As an aside ,bob junior has made my day!in it other mums indeed Grin

UterusUterusGhali · 09/10/2014 22:26

Giggling at Bobson's concern.

My dog used to get so excited about going out she'd jump into a taxi boot and refuse to move. I'd have left her there for a short journey.
