Facebook? Or do you believe if a guy wants to date you he will make it happen?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/07/2012 19:38

Not on facebook. In person, I would. Faint heart never won fair laddie and all that.

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 20:07

In person? Im not that brave!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/07/2012 20:08

Come on... strike one for the sisterhood.

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 20:12

Ok then would you ask a guy out on facebook, who you dont see face to face that often? Also never ever spoke on fb!

OP posts:
CogitoErgoSometimes · 09/07/2012 20:15

Maybe if there was no other way of contacting him. But I'm old-fashioned enough to think that asking someone on a date deserves the personal touch... phone-call at least.

Lucyellensmum12345 · 09/07/2012 20:18

maybe strike up a conversation on facebook, then see how it goes?

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 20:18

Yeah I guess but dont have those details!
Just dont want to look silly!

OP posts:
BertieBotts · 09/07/2012 20:19

I have done, it was fine!

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 20:19

I never see him online but he has a status every so often. So I would have to mail him but dont know if Im coming accross desperate? Not sure what Id say!

OP posts:
GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 20:20

How did you do it BertieBotts ?

OP posts:
GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 20:20

And did he say yes?

OP posts:
Jellykat · 09/07/2012 21:03

I've asked blokes out in my life, but usually face to face after i've an inkling the answer would more then likely be a Yes Smile.. Its not scarey if you slip in a casual 'We should go out sometime..' during a conversation and suss out the reaction.
Could you accidentally on purpose 'bump' into him?

BertieBotts · 09/07/2012 21:09

Yeah, just kind of during a conversation "We should go out some time".

I used to talk to him a lot on msn (technically not facebook - but same principle) anyway, so it just carried on from there. Always been received well :)

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:10

I have no clue what the answer would be, maybe a little daring!
I dont know how to accidently bump into him, and if I did it would jus be hey :) as we havnt probably spoke in years. He married, I married, I separated and he is now too. Him more recent than me. Maybe I am being a little desperate!

OP posts:
ImperialBlether · 09/07/2012 21:12

Do you actually have conversations with this guy?

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:13

I know hes recently single, from fb. Also saw his ex with another guy on the weekend. He might think jeeze I change my fb status and shes right in there, desperate! Oh I keep saying that word 'desperate' Im really not, its just there dont seem to be any good guys available and I remember him being a good guy. I went out with him a couple of times in my teens.

OP posts:
GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:14

No just say hello, hes on my fb as we went to school together and went out a few times in my teens.

OP posts:
blackteaplease · 09/07/2012 21:21

Hang on, are you friends with him on facebook? It sounds like you haven't had any contact with him, but you want to message him and ask him out as you heard he was single and you dated in your youth. Is that correct?

That is a little odd.

There's no reason why you can't contact him for old times sake to say hello and see where that ends up but I wouldn't go straight to asking him out.

FWIW, I asked my dh out for a drink face to face but as a previous poster said, I was fairly certain he liked me. Plus it was his last day at our work so if he said no I wouldn't have to see him again.

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:25

This is correct! Is it odd? Oh ok!
Yes I guess, Im not sure I want to ask him out, just asked the question on MN.
I dont know how else you get to date guys. Like I said in the post, do you wait to be asked out?

OP posts:
GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:26

Yeah I feel silly now! Talk first right! Oh the joys of being single!

OP posts:
Taghain · 09/07/2012 21:27

What's the worst that could happen? He'd say No.
But it'll probably be a Yes, since you used to know each other.
Something on the lines of "I haven't seen you for years, do you fancy catching up sometime?" ought to do it. Have some specific ideas in mind.

akaemmafrost · 09/07/2012 21:30

I am back out there after years being married. IMO wait for them to ask, show you're interested but let them do the asking. If they fancy you they will. IMO and I will probably be roasted for saying this, if you ask them then it sets up a dynamic where you appear to be the keener one and that's NOT good for the long term.

GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:31

I will have to mail him first and ask how he is I guess. I feel like a silly teenager now!

OP posts:
GemsAngels · 09/07/2012 21:33

This is true akaemmafrost I have the book of rules! My cousin gave it to me when I became single, although she never follows them.

OP posts:
Jellykat · 09/07/2012 21:42

Ah so there's an old connection there, thats good! Somehow you need to reconnect in a 'friend'ly way again first, and have a natter..

and No, you definitely don't have to wait to be asked IMO, but you do need to have some sort of feeling he's interested before you suggest it, and if as we suggest its a casual ask, it's not embarrassing if they just reply with a 'well i'm kinda busy', you just reply with a 'oh of course' type reply.
I wouldn't say that's needy, just being friendly Smile

I did this with my DP, he later said he'd never of asked me, because he's quite shy and thought i was 'out of his league'.. I'm not btw, he just had low self esteem.
