Odd find, secret DLA allowance....

I live with my DP, we're getting married later this year

I was just doing some tidying up, and sorting out a pile of paperwork/letters etc on the kitchen table, putting stuff in the pile to shred/file away etc

And I've found a letter, to DP from the DLA, about Disability Living Allowance, that he's getting nearky £400 a month on a higher rate care & lower rate mobility allowance - which I had no idea about whatsoever? Confused

I wasn't snooping, just sorting through what was important and what could be thrown away, it wasn't in an envelope, just in with other letters on the table

I know his in his family there is a medical history if disabilities - his brother has spina biffida & learning difficulties, and his sister has spina biffida but works normally although I know she does suffer a lot of pain sometimes & has had so many ops over the years to enable to her now live a fairly normal life

But he has never, ever told me her receives DLA, it's so strange and I just don't know what to think

He's at work today and then going to a friends tonight from work, I won't really see him until tomorrow, but this is just so odd

I don't even know what advise I'm looking for really, guess I'm just confused

Yes, but surely OP would have noticed if her DP had autism.

FioFio · 23/05/2012 13:30

can i just point out in reference to a post further up the thread, you can only claim carers allowance once. If you care for two people who receive middle-higher rater dla you can still only claim it once

FioFio · 23/05/2012 13:31

ceri, i would have thought someone who had a son with autism that qualifies for higher rate care you would more careful about wording your post to refer to those with disabilities as vegetables Hmm

Proudnscary · 23/05/2012 13:33

WTF Ceri?

Lovely turn of phrase Ceri Hmm

Also, if you have just joined and this is your first post, you are not going to win many friends.

CinnabarRed · 23/05/2012 13:51

Benefit of the doubt - could it have been am epic autocorrect fail?

DuelingFanjo · 23/05/2012 13:54

this is another one of those threads where the op never ever comes back isn't it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/05/2012 13:56

My DD can't dress herself, so I guess she IS a potato then..a very lovely one though

Vagaceratops · 23/05/2012 14:00

Neither can DS Fanjo - still only gets MRC though.

ChickensHaveNoLips · 23/05/2012 14:05

I hope that was an autocorrect fail.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/05/2012 14:05

Vagceratops- does he need help during night? I think that is the criteria for higher rate,20 mins of help a night. If he does and you get MRC then that is awful.

Vagaceratops · 23/05/2012 14:10

We renewed in March. He is awake 2-3 hours every night, but we were only awarded MRC, and I am to tired to fight it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 23/05/2012 14:29

that is just wrong isn't it :( I don't know how they make their decisions

Vagaceratops · 23/05/2012 14:34

My own personal opinion is that they are putting more and more people on MRC for when CA is changed next year.

But thats just me being cynical.

FioFio · 23/05/2012 15:13

why is CA being changed to HRC only?

carernotasaint · 23/05/2012 15:13

Agree vag. people who recieve Carers Allowance who care for someone on MRC are going to be eligible for workfare. And thats me being cynical.

FioFio · 23/05/2012 15:14

sorry but that is the first I have heard about it! So much for not touching carers benefits Hmm ahve the government not read the statistics that carers save this government at LEAST 87 BILLION POUNDS PER YEAR!

carernotasaint · 23/05/2012 15:18

Fio if you go to the "Benefit hatred is out of control" thread on the In the news board another poster Glitterknicaz explains it on there.

FioFio · 23/05/2012 15:19

okay, thanks

AmberLeaf · 23/05/2012 15:29

That makes me cynical too then!

FioFio · 23/05/2012 15:33

god I have just read that thread and the comments under the carer article. It just goes to show how ignorant people are about carers if they think they 'do nothing' all day Shock Jesus wept

cheapskatemum · 23/05/2012 20:49

I'm not even going to read that thread! Since I "do nothing" all day when caring for DS2 (ASD, SLD, BPD & non-verbal, so not surprisingly gets frustrated at times & displays challenging behaviour, 18 years old & 13 & half stone) & live in the lap of luxury due to all his benefits, line up here to swap lives with me!

Surely it's not a good sign that OP hasn't returned?

eatyourveg · 24/05/2012 06:53

what is workfare?
