So are any of you ladies thinking of popping the question on Leap day

Am only asking because l am incredibly nosey l agonised over it on the last one four years ago and in the end l bottled it and it was another year before he proposed so we did get there in the end. But it just reminded me hearing about it on the radio today of how l felt then and all the pros and cons- what if he said 'no' - would our relationship survive or if he said 'yes' would l always regret not waiting for him to ask me - being old fashioned and all. Wonder my head didnt explode Grin

See part of me wants him to be the one to do it, tradition and all that, and i wonder if he'd be a bit disappointed at being 'done out of it' if I just rush in and do it...I'm gonna play it by ear..if there's no proposal at dinner then I'm just gonna go for it hehe can't wait now!

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 29/02/2012 10:04

Toby - same here - I was thinking of doing it too but, well, what you said applies to me word by word.

Funny thing is I hinted over the last few days that I might pop the question so I think he will spend the whole day today worrying about it Grin

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 29/02/2012 10:05

Nobody, now that IS really exciting - I bet you'll have butterflies in your tummy all evening
How romantic
You will come back and tell us yes?

weblette · 29/02/2012 10:08

My little brother's just phoned - his GF proposed to him live on local radio. He couldn't really say no Grin so hooray for them and I get to buy a new hat

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 29/02/2012 10:14

Ha ha web was your brother OK with it?

weblette · 29/02/2012 10:16

Oh yes, he's a very happy bunny but had no idea she'd planned it all Grin

NobodyKnowsMe · 29/02/2012 10:20

Ah web that's lovely! I'm all jittery I have to be honest..he's taken the day off and is having a very well deserved lie in so I haven't said happy leap day to him yet lol and I know he'll be wondering if I'm about to pop the question but I've decided to hold back and see what happens at dinner.
I'll definitely come back and update..

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 29/02/2012 10:20

He must feel quite chuffed she went through all the trouble to propose. Nice

weblette · 29/02/2012 10:20

Good luck nobody - getting all excited for you too!!

Imnotaslimjim · 29/02/2012 10:43

Web, that wasn't on Real Radio was it? I heard a proposal on there this morning, it was really sweet :D

I proposed to my DH, in the leap year though not on Leap day. We'd been together 3 weeks and we're about to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary

AnAirOfHope · 29/02/2012 10:44

Congrats to Nobody Brother Smile

ohhh fuzzy thread Grin

weblette · 29/02/2012 10:47

Radio Tees I think, must check!

MurderOfProse · 29/02/2012 10:50

I had told now DH a month earlier whilst drunk that he had until midnight on the 29th Feb 2004. He scraped in a few hours before that deadline..

Kaekae · 29/02/2012 11:28

I would never do it. I have given up the idea of getting married took him

8 years to even ask me. Was nice though as he asked me in California on Santa Monica beach but we've been engaged for almost 5 years! Just saw a woman do it on The right Stuff and it made me really cringe.

mcmooncup · 29/02/2012 11:29

I'm filing for divorce instead

itsonlyyearfour · 29/02/2012 11:30

I just wanted to add to the encouragement to those who are thinking about it as I did it 8 years ago and he said yes! In a moment of madness I bought the rings and just went for it - we'd only been together 2 months!

We are still happily married 8 years later and have had 4, yes 4 children, so if I am anything to go by it was a great thing to do. We always laugh about it, especially when we hear about leap year and remember the event with great fondness!!

phedre · 29/02/2012 12:06

I proposed to my partner of 21 years today inspired by an MN thread. And, yippee he said yes.

It is hardly the newborn flush of love but I am very excited.

BoffinMum · 29/02/2012 12:08

Yay Phedre! Grin

BoffinMum · 29/02/2012 12:08
Thanks Wine
CheesyWellingtons · 29/02/2012 12:20

Yay Wine. Loving this thread and marking my place for later.

justcallmemary · 29/02/2012 12:21

This is my first ever post - I had to tell. I proposed last time and went mega romantic. Checked out the Leap Year thing online and had also read that gypsies give a handerchief to their intended and if they are wearing it next time they see them the answer is yes. Mixed it together and had a card on his desk on the 29th with handkerchief in it, explaining that he had to buy me some silk gloves or a dress if the answer was no (it's an actual ancient law!!) and then I sent him 3 roses with "Please" "Say" "Yes" through the day - the last one I delivered to his house with my heart beating like mad in case he came in. I got him a taxi to our fave restaurant and got ready (and a bit drunk) with his mum so was late meeting him!! He had the hankie and we haven't looked back since. :-)

NobodyKnowsMe · 29/02/2012 12:25

Away phedra go you!! Well he's up now, I just reminded him of the date today and he said oh God the restaurant will be full of women on their knees.. then he had a 'giggety' moment at the innuendo (anyone who's seen family guy will know what I mean) I just kinda grinned.. he knows I have the balls to do it, but I really do hope he does it first.

When we first met he was dead against marriage, both his parents had cheated openly then divorced badly. I on the other hand come from a family of long married happy, faithful couples. He's gradually warmed to the idea over the 4 years we've been together so it would mean so much more if the proposal came from him..we shall see!

Charleymouse · 29/02/2012 12:26

Congratulations Phedre!

I did in 1988 at the local bus stop on the way home from college ,using a ring pull as a ring, we had been together 4 months he said yes but I think he thought I was joking.

I then waited until 1999 for DH to return the question. Married in 2000. Could in hindsight have married when we were 17 but just not the done thing at the time.

We have been together 25 years this year. OMG how did I get so old?

BrianTheBrainSurgeon · 29/02/2012 13:19

Congrats Phedre! Thanks and lots of Wine

Oh Nobody I can feel the tension and excitement rising by the hour!!!!

Eeeeeek! Can't wait!

weblette · 29/02/2012 13:19

Congratulations phedre!

Just found my DB's GF's proposal on the radio and am blubbling, oh dear!
