Do you consider your dh/partner to be your best friend?

Sometimes I feel a bit weird that I do. Apart from my mum he is the only person I know who doesn't get on my nerves after a while.

I have female friends - coffee, lunches, nights out - but no one that I could say oh my best friend is x,y,z

Is this weird? Is your oh your best friend or am I in a minority?

Just curious

Yes, definitely.

JuicyLips · 29/06/2011 19:11

yes, he is my best friend, we consider eachother to be our best friends. we had this discussion the other day as a couple we know were talking about the fact she had a best male friend that wasn't her husband. They've decided to split up now. (but due to financial problems between them rather than that being an issue.)

Have a girl best friend too but I think dh and I will always be closer.

noreallyitsnothing · 29/06/2011 19:29

Gosh I am v jealous of all you ladies in functional relationships.

He is my best friend but I am not his, as he has told me many times. This may well be why he cheated recently.

It is great to know though, both here and with girlfriends of mine, that a best friendship type marriage/partnership can and does exist. I will aim higher next time round!

saltyseadog · 29/06/2011 19:31

Absolutely my best friend.

dustycups · 29/06/2011 19:33

yup!! but i am in a relationship with another women!

TyDontWannaMissAthing · 29/06/2011 19:34

I am dh and dh is my best friend.
We have been together since I was 16 and he was 20 :)

mrsravelstein · 29/06/2011 19:36

i wouldn't say i have a 'best friend'... i do have a handful of female friends who i've known for years and who i would tell anything to, i guess i'd consider them my best friends.

i don't think of dh as being a 'friend', but i guess it's just terminology

EttiKetti · 29/06/2011 19:38

Not sure, I think so, but my best female friend is a pretty close runner in the competition!!

WiiUnfit · 29/06/2011 19:38

DP is absolutely my best friend. :)

I do have a female best friend too but the dynamics are different.

ZZZenAgain · 29/06/2011 19:39

yes definitely

Peachy · 29/06/2011 19:43

He is absolutely my best friend, yes. Doesn't mean I don't have other close friends- school friends mainly- but they live away as we moved.

However we started as friends and work colleagues; we were always used to spending hours a day working together and built upon that. Indeed, we argue if we don't see much of each other, rather than too much: we are happy to live in each other's pockets.

Which doesn't mean we never spend time apart- DH works from home so he does a hobby that although we share involves him without me a lot- but it really does depend on the individual relationship and how it started I think.

LittleWhiteWolf · 29/06/2011 19:44

Yes he is, but he is not my only best friend.

Awomancalledhorse · 29/06/2011 19:47

Like LittleWhiteWolf, I'd say DH is my best friend, but I have a best friend who I know I could go to for anything.
So if we can use school yard rules, I have two best friends!

ByTheSea · 29/06/2011 19:49

Yes, and so much more too.

Ilythia · 29/06/2011 20:21

Yes, he is my best friend but I have known him since I was 14 so does that make it 'ok' Hmm

lookbutdonttouch · 29/06/2011 20:53

Yes yes yes and so much more.

I have girlie best friends for that side of life though...

Malificence · 29/06/2011 20:54

I can't imagine anything worse than not doing everything with my DH, I really don't get people who lead different social lives to their partners.
I consider him my best friend, he's the only person in this world that I trust absolutely, the only one who has never let me down, friends come and go.

Ilythia, I've known mine since we were 13 and we were friends before we were lovers, it would be interesting to see whether the people whose husbands aren't their best friends stay married for a lifetime.

mumblechum1 · 29/06/2011 21:00

We have separate social lives in that I see my girlfriends once a week or so, but I don't think DH would really be that interested in our conversation.

Carrotsandcelery · 29/06/2011 21:05

He is definitely my best friend.

I do have a very close female friend too though.

branstonsandcheese · 29/06/2011 21:08

Dh was my best friend before we got together and that was a billion years ago.

When we were having problems a year or so ago it was quite claustrophobic, having nobody else to talk to (because he'd always be my confidante too), and since then I've made an effort to build closer bonds with others.

Well, DW is my best friend. She says that I am hers.
I am sure that we both have others, but the friends side of things is 'open'.
We enjoy socialising together and apart we could spend all our time together, but the kids aren't quite best friend material yet. (certainly cannot buy a round) Socialising apart may be primarily down to having friends that definitely do not play well with others.

If we were too similar, I'd imagine we'd eventually rub against each other in an uncomfortable way. An example: She likes black wine gums; I like the red. I save the reds to the end of the bag; she scoffs the blacks first. YIng-Yang. "She completes me." etc.

However, when I see something that touches my soul, I want to share it with her. There are mates of both genders that would enjoy it and get it in the way I do too, but only DW will make the memory one that I'll treasure until the end.

I have only known my DW for 14 years and been married for the last 7 so I am a relative newbie compared to some posters.

PeterSpanswick · 29/06/2011 21:59

Not today. Definitely not today!

GoodDaysBadDays · 29/06/2011 22:03

Definitely.

mousymouse · 29/06/2011 22:06
