Wobbleing....My Father (ie: grandfather to be) is not happy with possible baby name!

Hi all,

Long story so my apologize in advanace.

DH and I really really love a 'certain' girls name. The name isn't important.

My father however has 'gotta' wind of this name and needless to say he's not best pleased, and has been slagging me and the name off to the whole sodding family. angry I've been told it's old fashioned and shouldn't be used as a first name. He said much worse when I spoke with him on the phone, but to be honest his rudeness isn't the problem. It's that I'm now starting to wobble over a name I've wanted since I'm been about 15.

I should also mention, the name in question is my middle name, my grandmothers middle name and my great-grandmother's first name. My father gave me this name so I don't understand the problem.

DH doesn't understand why I'm worried about what my father thinks, as 'you've never listened to your father, why start now'..grin

I'm now concerned about using this name...! Esp if baby arrives and it look nothing like 'the name'. First time Mum here and clearly over thinking things...shock However I don't wish to upset my father nor fall out with him as this is his first grandchild.

Any advance would be great.

Honor is lovely.

Go with what you love. You will regret it otherwise.

I was dead-set on my daughter's name but didn't want to tell anyone what I'd chosen.

Some stupid Australian woman at a party finally managed to glean in out of me. When I finally told her that we had chosen Matilda, she screeched: "ya can't name ya kid after a bleeudy sheeeep".

Turns out that "Waltzing Matilda" has a more (errr) interesting story behind it than a mere billabong. No offence to any Aussies out there.

Stick to your guns. Honor is a lovely name. Just as long as they don't call her Ho for short. Kidding! Grin I mean, as if?!!

Stick to your guns!

I didn't tell my father our name list, I let it slip to my grandmother...who has the same middle name. And she told my father, she promised she won't but she was so pleased that we like and wanted to use the name in her excitement she told him....thinking he would be please too!

Good to know at 86 years old, people still get it wrong!!!

Really what a GIRL now...a boy would be lovely but HONOR....!

Vagabond I love the name Matilda, sadly DH doesn't like the way it sounds with our surname. Xmas Hmm

Honor is a really lovely name.

Do you think there'll be lots of little Catherines after the Royal Wedding in April?

While I was at the hospital last night a new grandma came out to the waiting room to tell the new grandad that baby was to be called Dylan.

Dylan, he exclaimed, how can I go to work Monday and tell them IT'S called Dylan.

IT'S Xmas Shock

You just can't please all the grandparents all the time. Go with what you want, your baby no-one else's.

This is a good example of why telling people your name choices before the birth is a bad idea. people are less inslined to slag off a baby's name once baby is there and being called it.
He sounds unpleasant. It's a lovely name. I'd tell him his reaction is putting you off him, not the name.

aurynne · 13/12/2010 03:27

If it helps you at all, I also find your choice of name beautiful. An unusual name, without being ordinary, or chavvy. And it actually goes beautifully with the middle name. Go for it! If your dad does not like it, he can always call her "Hon" or "Honey" :)

Sibble · 13/12/2010 03:40

My family didn't like my choice of name for either of my boys. They got over it and both names suit my boys. Stick to your guns - they had their naming chance with their children, this is your turn.

BTW I think it's lovely.

Anniegetyourgun · 13/12/2010 08:47

I bet if you'd told him you were set on calling your baby Iris he would have said "damned old-fashioned nonsense, what's wrong with Honor"!

Btw "three boys and serve you right", I had four boys and wouldn't swap any one of them for anything, even though we were running out of acceptable names by the end Grin. I had enough names for three girls all ready and never got to use any one of them. But I have four gorgeous sons and couldn't be more blessed.

Highlandgirl · 13/12/2010 17:13

aurynne thanks Smile He'll get over it. Not so keen on Honey, don't really think you can nn Honor...?!?!?1

I'd be very happy with 3 boys, in fact I'm very happy and blessed that we are able to have children or at least a child (at this stage) DH only wants 2 children, so 3 would be brilliant...saying that lets have the first one first...[fshocked]

He'll get over it...!

WhyMeWhyNot MIL is Kathryn but DH and I don't like the spelling. I wanted Katherine, but DH prefers it with a 'C'...!

Can't get him to pick a boys name, but he's fussing over Kathryn, Katherine and Catherine spelling...! Typical x
