If you are married do you wear a wedding ring?

Just interested really.

I have not worn my rings for a few days because my finger has been sore and it feels really nice to not have them on. Got me wondering why we wear them in the first place, is it purely to let other people that we are 'taken'?

I do, but I'm fairly ambivalent towards them tbh. I'm not a big jewellry fan anyway. Agree, it feels nice not to wear them!

brokeoven · 11/11/2010 15:12

i do dh does not.

I like my wedding ring, tis the only piece of jewelry i wear.

dh is a mechanic and says it could get caught in an engine. just dont think he has ever got used to it tbh.

Briar · 11/11/2010 15:13

I've worn my wedding ring everyday for the past 20+ years, I don't actively put it on every morning or anything...it's just that I never take it off.

My other rings get taken off as they have stones in them, so I worry about losing the stones...but my wedding ring has no stones so no need to take it off!

I think the idea of a wedding ring is to let others know we are 'taken' so to speak.

UnquietDad · 11/11/2010 15:16

Yes, it's the only jewellery adornment of any sort I wear - and I think this is true of all of my married friends apart from one who sports an earring.

Malificence · 11/11/2010 15:38

I don't wear mine more often than I do wear it, I'm not a huge jewellery fan tbh, I don't need a ring to tell me I'm taken.
My original ring (which matches DH's) ceased to fit me when I was pregnant.
DH wears 2 wedding rings, his original and the celtic one I bought him for our 25th.

everybodysgotone · 11/11/2010 15:40

I have one, but only wear if it goes with my outfit Grin

theagedparent · 11/11/2010 15:40

I haven't worn mine for years, it got thrown out of the car window during a heated debate. DH lost his surfing or so he tells me.

Pinkjenny · 11/11/2010 15:42

I take mine off overnight but I don't generally go out the house without my engagement ring, wedding ring and eternity ring on. Mainly due to paranoia about them being stolen, and also the fact that my finger feels naked without them.

jesuswhatnext · 11/11/2010 15:43

my wedding ring is fairly huge so i take it off along with my other rings as soon as i get home, it also has opals in it which would spoil if they got wet/hot etc. - i dont need it to remind me that im married though - i have my wrinkles and bank balance for that! Grin

Lemonstartree · 11/11/2010 15:44

I wore mine every day (except in the later stages of pregnancy) whilst I was married. I took it off the day I told XH to leave. Hugely symbolic to me.

and I check out if men are wearing one now...

CandlestickMaker · 11/11/2010 15:52

I wear one, and an engagement ring. After a few years of being a single mum, with all the prejudices and steorotypes that go with it I quite like people to know I'm married now. They're also very shiny Grin
DH doesn't wear his, becuase of his work and because he forgets to put it back on.

CandlestickMaker · 11/11/2010 15:53

Forgot to say I haven't taken it off since we wed, and don't plan to.

Lambzig · 11/11/2010 15:56

I never take my wedding or engagement ring off (except for cleaning)and I really like wearing them.

I used to throw my old wedding ring at my Ex husband every time we had a row (frequent) so was determined never to take my new rings off when I married my DH.

MotherofHobbit · 11/11/2010 15:58

No, and neither does DH. I'm just not a jewellery person.

I find the idea of wearing it to leteveryone know I'm 'taken' a bit odd. It seems to imply that unmarried=available. I know I've made a commitment, it doesn't really worry me if anyone else knows.

RubberDuck · 11/11/2010 16:09

I wear one, but I quite freely take it off.

I really don't like wearing it at night, so take that and my engagement ring comes off before I sleep.

I also take it off for training (martial arts) - I could tape it up each time I suppose, but quicker to just remove it. I know some people don't in class, but I have also been caught by someone else's ring repeatedly during a drill which wasn't pleasant, so yes, always remove it for that.

LoudRowdyDuck · 11/11/2010 16:11

Not always (I'm not wearing it now). I tend to take it off when I'm in the house/typing because I don't like the way it clinks against the edge of my laptop.

It's not a big sentimental thing for me and we didn't do an exchange of rings at our wedding.

HeadingHome · 11/11/2010 16:14

I always wear my wedding ring. It makes me feel safe(r) from being hit on.

Yes, I'm that damn attractive.

expatinscotland · 11/11/2010 16:14

Yes. So does DH.

everybodysgotone · 11/11/2010 16:18

HeadingHome Grin

I didn't know you could get married without exchanging rings. Did you just that bit of the ceremony out LRD?

stubbornhubby · 11/11/2010 16:18

i wear one, but I take it off in the gym because of all the babes using the rowing machine makes my finger sore.

LoudRowdyDuck · 11/11/2010 16:20

Sure you can. The registry office doesn't require you to do it if you don't tick the box. We didn't do it in church because in DH's religion it's part of a separate, earlier ceremony, which we had privately. It annoyed a few people who thought we were sticking two fingers up to tradition, mind!

I find my face and figure perfectly adequate protection from being hit on most of the time, but your approach might be less trouble Headinghome. Grin

SweetnessAndShite · 11/11/2010 16:25

I would wear it if it hadn't flown off at the park while I was pushing DSs on the swings never to be seen again.

I do like to wear something on that finger though. I'm hoping DH might take the hint and buy me a new one one day but for now have a hematite band that I bought for £3.50 from the Dinosaur Park.

WowOoo · 11/11/2010 16:29

Mine has never come off.

Don't think I could actually get it off. My fingers were a bit skinnier when I got married. I've never tried because it would probably hurt my knuckles.

Squitten · 11/11/2010 16:32

Yep, I wear wedding, engagement and eternity rings.

HeadingHome · 11/11/2010 16:33

"I find my face and figure perfectly adequate protection from being hit on most of the time"

LOVE IT! :)
