Has my husband been unfaithful?

upintheair · 18/08/2010 16:51

Really don't know what to think.

DH and I have been married for 15 years (we are both in our 40's and have two children)

Never had any reason to suspect him but about a week ago he developed a sore eye which we thought was conjunctivitis.

It hadn't improved with over the counter drops so he saw his GP last week who referrred him for an eye clinic appointment which he had yesterday.

They have tested him for Chlymydia Sad and results should be through in next day or so.

According to DH, this could have been picked up when he took our son swimming a few weeks ago but can this be true?

I have zero medical knowledge but had a quick search online and this can only be transmitted through sexual activity.

I have never been unfaithful to my husband so he hasn't caught it from me. I am so confused.

i know that I need to discuss this with him but just need time to gather myself first.

Does anyone have experience of Chlamydia? Can it only be transmitted through sexual activity Sad

I'm sorry, I not sure I understand. Are you saying that your DH was tested for chlymydia as a result of a sore eye? I fail to see how the two are related!

Yes it most definitely is only transmitted through sex and many people have no symptoms so can be carrying it for years without realising.

It's probably better to wait until the results come back before worrying. I just don't understand why he has had this test for a sore eye....

MrsGangly · 18/08/2010 17:04

Sounds fairly standard to me for conjunctivitis that is not getting better. It can cause eye infections so the eye clinic are just being thorough. I wouldn't worry about it.

thesunshinesbrightly · 18/08/2010 17:04

Nor me don't get the sore eye and the test for Chlamydia Hmm but i'm watching with interest cause my OH as being complaining of a sore eye.

tribpot · 18/08/2010 17:06

According to NHS Direct in rare cases it can affect the eyes.

Wait for the results.

TeeBee · 18/08/2010 17:11

They will be testing for chlamydial conjunctivitis. Not necessarily sexually transmitted - but can be. Also, do you know for certain you don't have chlamydial infection? Not saying you do but it is so underdiagnosed and usually symptomless.

atswimtwolengths · 18/08/2010 17:11

According to www.homehealth-uk.com/medical/chlamydia.htm (link not working):

"Occasionally, it can affect the eyes, known as trachoma. This can occur if the infection is transferred to the eyes, by fingers, which have been in contact with the genitals."

I'm sorry you suspect your husband now - if it is chlamydia, I don't think he could've got it from swimming.

Rollergirl1 · 18/08/2010 17:13

Well I didn't know that! It does sound like the eye clinic are just being thorough. Although why your DH is suggesting it can be caught from swimming pools is a bit dodgy, unless he's just exceptionally naive.

GeekOfTheWeek · 18/08/2010 17:20

You can get chlamydia in the eye. Usually from a hand that has been in contact with the infection.

Have you both tested negative since you have been together?

Taghain · 18/08/2010 17:23

He's not necessarily naive if he's faithful. If he's had no reason to worry about STDs then he wouldn't know that Chlamydia can infect they eyes.

So if he's not been shagging around and he's offered tests, he'll be wondering where he might have picked it up from. He may be wondering about what you've been up to, too.

stubbornhubby · 18/08/2010 17:46

clinics have a list of standard tests for everything.

If I am at a doctor I always half-listen and say 'yes, yes, yes, whatever, test me for everything.... (follwoed by arrggggh surely you don't need THAT much, do you?)

but it's never occured to me that agreeing to a test could be regarded as suspicious. If chlamydia was on a list I probably wouldn't even have noticed.

wait for the results.

SilaNaGeige · 18/08/2010 18:53

It can't be transmitted by swimming Hmm don't know why your DH would say so, TBH!

If it's an Urban Myth, it's not a popular one.

If you've got any doubts why not pop to your local GUM for a check up?

quaere · 18/08/2010 18:54

Is he a vet??

You can catch chlamydia off sheep (no funny business, stop laughing at the back). Honest

tribpot · 18/08/2010 19:15

Well that never happened on All Creatures Great and Small !

BaggyAgy · 18/08/2010 21:07

Is he Welsh?

Ellielou02 · 18/08/2010 21:19

I dont think you should worry too much, if it is chlamydia in his eye there are more ways that it spreads to eyes than sexual contact, coughing, sneezing and even some insect can carry it, hope its ok though.

Hulababy · 18/08/2010 21:27

Can also be transmitted eye to eye

suitejudyblue · 18/08/2010 21:39

Unless you have any other reasons to be suspicious I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet.
It sounds like you didn't go to the appointment with your DH so why would he tell you what he was being tested for if he had anything to hide.
If he was being unfaithful surely he would keep quiet until he had the results and at the very least give himself time to come up with a more convincing excuse.

macdoodle · 18/08/2010 21:40

Really Ellie?? Link please??

Doha · 18/08/2010 21:56

Never heard that one Ellie !!!!

Eurostar · 18/08/2010 23:09

Yes the STD chlamdydia can infect the eye. I was at the eye clinic recently and there was a poster up about it, apparently it's getting more common.

This is what it says on one website
"Chlamydia is spread from person-to-person during unprotected sex. It can be passed through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. It can also be passed to the eye by a hand or other body part moistened with infected secretions. Chlamydia can be passed from a woman infected with chlamydia to her fetus during birth. Chlamydia cannot be spread by kissing, toilet seats, bed linens, doorknobs, swimming pools, hot tubs, bathtubs, sharing clothes, or eating utensils".

One can get oral chlamyida too so if someone actively coughed over him who had it and he immediately put his finger in his eye, it could transmit I guess, highly unlikely this would happen with a stranger though.

So the swimming pool thing sounds rubbish, like he was looking for an excuse but knew he couldn't hide it from you altogether as you'll need to be tested. Or, he is so sure he couldn't have an STD that he just came up with that trying to work it out for himself as he has never been unfaithful.

However, it hasn't come back positive yet? Just speculation? So may well be some other infection and not chlamyidia at all?

upintheair · 18/08/2010 23:50

Hi everyone and thanks, had to abandon thread for a while there to take care of kids.

Apparently, the doctor at the eye clinic said that he could have picked it up from the swimming pool. DH was a bit sceptical himself but didnt say anything to the doctor.

I am trying not to jump to conclusions but when your start to think about STD's, it's hard not to.

It does seem possible that it has been transmitted in other ways but I guess we need to wait for the results to be 100% certain.

I have never been unfaithful to my husband. He is the only sexual partner that I have ever had (honest guv) - just incase you were all wondering Grin

LittleMissHissyFit · 19/08/2010 12:59

liketolearn, what a helpful comment there, from one of our newest members.... Hmm

so is your skin condition an indication of your guilt then? What did you do?

Or perhaps you'll grow out of it....
