Any other Armando Iannucci fans?

Because I love him. A lot. And read an article which said that most people would never have heard of him, to which I though "what utter rot", and composed a witty riposte. In my head.

So, anyone else a fan of the Big-nosed Jock Wop?

Oh dear. Unfortunate thread juxtaposition - after this in active convos it immediately read "Flippin WANKER"...

Was that the Guardian article? I read it and thought "I bet most people reading this will have heard of him, given that he had a Guardian column for a long time".

Yes, I love the man and I have to see that film. If Armando isn't enough, it's even got Tony Soprano in it.

shonaspurtle · 15/04/2009 21:47

Yes yes yes! He's an absolute genius.

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 21:52

I'm just entertaining myself by watching lots of clips on YouTube.

Did you see this bit of the Guardian article?

"Some of Iannucci's more whimsical work has puzzled fans. It has tended to feature Iannucci himself, and his popularity as a performer commands less mainstream appeal. When a comic can create something as funny as Alan Partridge, it's confusing to viewers when they produce something which seems self-evidently unfunny, so I ask if he can always tell the difference"

Self-evidently unfunny? Did you mean "apparently", Decca, you blitherer? And the AI shows were very very funny.

Snorbs · 15/04/2009 21:53

Absolutely - I'll watch/listen to anything that's got his name associated with it. The man's a comedy genius.

policywonk · 15/04/2009 22:01

Ah, this is the first film I've wanted to see for aaaaages.

Agree with Decca A about his work as a performer though - much prefer him behind the camera myself.

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:04

Oh, shush, pw - this is not the forum for objective criticism. It's a shrine. Besides, you can't agree with her - she's semantically challenged.

I like his really absurd stuff, and love him on the radio. I've just been re-reading Facts and Fancies.

See, I love the contrast between his slightly nasal, Weegie, sounds-like-he-could-be-an-accountant voice and what comes out his mouth. I'm a sucker for deadpan delivery.

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:08

Do you think he sounds Weegie? DH and I were talking about this, and thought he was more generic central belt. But yes, delivery is just perfect.

OP posts:
shonaspurtle · 15/04/2009 22:11

Oh yes. Definitely Weegie. But of a certain professional type - it's all in the nasal drawl.

NigellaTufnel · 15/04/2009 22:12

He is the funniest man in Britain.

I love Malcolm Tucker.

Hassled · 15/04/2009 22:18

Sorry, but PW is right. He should stay firmly behind the camera.

You're right about Decca, though.

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:20

Take your profanities out of the Shrine.

What about on the radio? Facts and Fancies? Charm Offensive?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 22:22

he went to my school. i have embarrassing diary entries about him. him and his enormous BRAIN.

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:24

Did he - at the same time as you? He's older, isn't he - by quite a bit? Did you worship him from afar? You do have good comedy connections, don't you? Dara, Armando...

OP posts:
Threadworm · 15/04/2009 22:26

He went to my friend's landlord's wedding.

AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 22:27

yes, he was much older. he was a debater. i was a young geek... the rugby team held no attraction for me.

EffiePerine · 15/04/2009 22:29

We'e just been re-watching The Thick of it. Genius. And though he's v good as a guest I'm not keen on the Charm Offensive, tends to stray into boring fartness

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:31

3 degrees of separation, eh, Threadie?

Armando debating. hmm. Was he funny?

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 22:32

yes, lol. i was going through my woody allen phase, he was a bit like that, but less needy. he wore SHIT clothes.

AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 22:33

he's on twitter, btw. it almost made me join, but then i think my entire life would swirl down the plughole.

policywonk · 15/04/2009 22:33

He used to be good mates (at Oxford) with a friend of mine. If we're doing degrees.

Habbibu · 15/04/2009 22:34

Isn't his twitter thing a fake? Twitter is just shit, anyway.

Ok - when Armando's wife/mother shows up, she's won.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 15/04/2009 22:35

i'd better still be winning this one.

when he's in glasgow he goes to my church. (or did, about a hundred years ago. i don't know if he still attends.)

key thing is... i knew he was a god long before anyone else picked it. so i win.

policywonk · 15/04/2009 22:36

I'm quite liking Twitter, cos of its randomness. Prefer it to facebook, on which I just keep thinking 'but you're my mate, I could just ring you'.
