Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that like George you like your steak very well done, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Mulligan mostly makes me think of John Finnemore's Souvenir Show. This is good, and tenuously connected to a recent TA storyline

Over to you!

I’m guessing the brilliant Louise Brealey is too in demand to be able to commit to a permanent role in TA. So Chris might only be granted a brief romance?

The stuff about organising the funeral is slightly baffling. Both my parents were buried two days after they died. The undertaker handled all the business - what clothes did I want them in, did I want a death notice in the paper etc (yes), did I want an expensive coffin (no), did I want music (no) did I want to write prayers (yes) and say a few words afterwards (also yes), and would the local pub dinner be suitable afterwards (yes).

I know we do things differently in Ireland but of all jobs to hand over to the professional, surely that's it.

And it was made clear that I would not be expected to stump up money for at least a year.

All very different in England, I fear, especially that last bit.

I don't think Esme is arranging the minutiae of the funeral, but she may well have had to spend a lot of time tracking down people who would want to be informed and may want to come to the funeral. Lots of conversations, and that's wearing. Also, there is wide variation nowadays in how people organise funerals and refreshments, so there are lots of decisions for the bereaved to make and they will have to consider and approve what the funeral director and the vicar suggest. It would all have been much easier a few decades ago when everybody did things the same way and to the same timescale.

She is trying to keep on top of her job too, which can't be easy.

I was thinking on the same lines! I was surprised to see someone as well known as this taking on such a tiny role, but it makes sense now if she's going to be around for a little while.

Maybe Chris will have a bit of a thing with Carly for old times' sake, they'll part amicably, and it will help him because he'll finally realise that he'll never be with Alice again but that's ok. Maybe he'll have a FWB type of situation with Carly because neither want an actual relationship.

onceuponatimeinneverland · 03/11/2025 15:21

Where Carly and Chris's antics broadcast? I seem to remember Carly been the sully teenager.

BeaLola · 03/11/2025 17:47

I find it strange that the castle trip is supposedly going ahead with so many of Peggy's family not going eg

Kate and Martha
Henry & Jack
Tony & Pat
Debbie
Sipho and Nolatando
Adam and xander ?? Can't recall if they are taking him out of school

Buxusmortus · 03/11/2025 18:27

I seem to recall Xander won't be taken out of school. So only Lillian out of Peggy's children will be going. Will James and mungo be going? Seems like more won't than will. I hope something goes wrong because ruari's been behaving like a little shit over it and he shouldn't be organising it or even going really. I can't imagine Peggy ever thought he'd be the one to organise it all.

Brefugee · 03/11/2025 19:02

I really rally need Alice and Adam to put the cuckoo in their nest right on a few things.

faffadoodledo · 03/11/2025 19:30

Did we ever discover what happened to all of Peggy’s money?

muddyford · 03/11/2025 20:30

Left to a magical dementia charity that cures sufferers, or some such unlikely SL.

ChersHeart · 03/11/2025 20:43

Kate will go, Alice won't.

Bruisername · 03/11/2025 20:43

The holiday is absurd. Very poor sw

Maersk · 03/11/2025 21:14

Did the will not specify that everyone had to go?

Madcats · 03/11/2025 21:27

I thought the will was very clear that they ALL had to go on the holiday (though I think we weren’t sure who “all” might be).

The whole legacy storyline was even dafter than the rewilding trust.

WitcheryDivine · 03/11/2025 22:35

I’m still hoping someone will revise recent plots and realise that Peggy’s Will is one that needs resolving. I don’t think it was suggested that all the money was going to the charity was it?

I hate to agree but re the ridiculous levelling out of society in Ambridge - it takes away from people’s motivations. In real life Chelsea might see how much easier life is for Freddie because he has money and use that to motivate herself to get a thriving business going. But no because he’s seemingly one up from dishwasher at LL when he’s there.

Can anyone remember how long Chelsea has been at college? It feels like aeons.

JudyCoolibar · 03/11/2025 23:15

Is it even likely that probate has gone through on Peggy's estate? I would have thought it's likely to be quite complicated. Presumably there must be an executor who has to ensure that the terms of the will are complied with? I really don't see how they could possibly authorise paying for a holiday which only a few family members can benefit from, just because Ruari happens to have found something he thinks is a bargain.

Knowing lawyers, and also knowing Peggy, I'm sure there's a written list of 'ALL' and I'm pretty sure Ruairi isn't on it. But also sure that a real life lawyer would have sent said list to everyone who is on it.

Unless Peggy's devious mind games from beyond the grave involve keeping everyone in ignorance.

Bruisername · 04/11/2025 07:34

Love it if they go to the executors and they say ‘nope sorry, can’t give you that money back as it was organised by someone not on the list and half the family were excluded’

DeanElderberry · 04/11/2025 07:40

I don't see how the executors could say anything else.

Who are the executors?

TottersBlithely · 04/11/2025 07:46

Ignore.

BeatriceBatchelor · 04/11/2025 07:52

Thanks Gasp - I thought I recognised the actress's voice from an audiobook I enjoyed.

Susan's breathy voice when talking to My Grandson made me cringe.

DeanElderberry · 04/11/2025 07:53

As with so much, the baffling lack of anyone acting the way real humans would is - baffling.

Meeting arranged by Kate: Item one

List all the direct, blood-linked descendants.

Lilian, Tony, please e-mail everyone and find some time slots we can all be away, annoyingly that will mean not during school time or while anyone is about to be born.

Find a location - which has to be somewhere that both the British and the South African family members can afford to get to and to stay in.

Decide whether spouses and step siblings are welcome. Probably, but Brian, Ruairi, Pat and Natasha etc will have to pay for themselves.

Block book somewhere with yurts and pigmy goats and enjoy the weekend from hell.

BeatriceBatchelor · 04/11/2025 08:20

I'd hate to think Ruairi would be excluded because he isn't "blood" but it is bizarre that it's going ahead because he fancies a castle in Scotland when younger family members are in school.

And I can't imagine spouses being excluded.

The whole thing is bizarre and I hope it stops soon.

ChersHeart · 04/11/2025 10:43

I don't like Carly's voice. I don't want Chris to go out with her. He belongs with Alice.

The holiday seems a complete joke. Everyone bullied by a non-descendant of Peggy's. Maybe there will be an Hambridge does Amlet Christmas Special.
