Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you want to hear more from Markey, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Why such a fuss over Ash? I wasn’t a listener during Dross’ first incarnation. Was he a character then?

Back to fish again. Salmon and chips is basically a slightly strange twist on fish and chips so I am surprised Trace didn’t say that. The SWs must like fish as it always seems to be cropping up. Glad everyone in Ambridge has such a balanced diet…although chips on a Monday seems surprising.

Ambridge · 19/08/2025 08:26

For a family usually presented as on the struggling side financially, I’m surprised to hear that Tracey and Jazzer regularly have salmon for tea - it’s definitely quite a pricey choice these days. Healthy, yes - but with chips?? 🤔 That’s a thing I’d never have contemplated. Surely the SWs can’t be thinking of 'rock salmon', ie huss, which was a staple of fish and chip shops back in the day?

TottersBlankly · 19/08/2025 08:27

I don’t remember Ash at all.

I had thought there was a guy named Rollo in the band - I remember liking his name.

Anyway, I guess the point of this now late bandmate will be to prompt life changes amongst those still remaining?

Chips on a Monday is probably what the SW think working class people eat. I'm sure they wouldn't have Lilian, Elizabeth or Lynda eating chips on a Monday, if ever.

I didn't realise there were rules on days of the week for chips ... or who is allowed to eat salmon, for that matter. I will eat chips on whatever day I like. If I fancied them with salmon I would eat them with salmon.

I was more curious about Bert. Do they feed him?

Same here. You can get inexpensive salmon in Iceland, Lidl etc. Not necessarily the best but still salmon. I will also eat chips whatever day I want although I don't have them very often.

ExitPursuedByABare · 19/08/2025 10:13

Salmon and chips seems a very odd combination to me.

Did Dross actually feature back in the day? Must have been when I was on a break.

Hercisback1 · 19/08/2025 10:21

Chips can be eaten any day. Eating chips with salmon is slightly strange but nothing extraordinary.

Brefugee · 19/08/2025 12:09

chips, any time. I am vaguely amused by "my famous chips" as though they are a complete mystery that nobody can fathom.

Salmon and chips? yep. Any day of the week.

Is Martyn going to get a crush on Tracy? Will Ash turn out to have been incredibly rich, with loads of Dross songs recorded, and about to be uploaded to Spotify? Are there some royalties to be paid? Interesting. How far is Cheshire from Ambridge (am useless at UK geography)

Gonners · 19/08/2025 12:52

Perhaps Martyn will get a crush on Ash's widow, buy some tight leather jeans and attempt to join Dross.

TheCrasher · 19/08/2025 13:10

Rollo is either Fallon's half-brother or step-brother. I can't remember if he was in Dross, but it was that sort of time when we heard about him.

How far is Cheshire from Ambridge (am useless at UK geography)
Chester is about 86 miles from Worcester as the crow flies. Shropshire is between the two counties.

TottersBlankly · 19/08/2025 13:29

Step brother is what I’m remembering? The son of Wayne’s ex?

I remember Fallon being impressed with him, for some reason - did he not join Dross?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 19/08/2025 13:38

Nothing odd about salmon and chips.

I boycott salmon as farmed salmon are kept in vile conditions and catching and eating wild salmon can't be condoned now- rarely see it for sale anyway.

Bruisername · 19/08/2025 13:54

I’m vegetarian so meat and fish are a little beyond me but I bought some wild salmon when my fil visited and he spent the whole meal going on and on about how awful salmon was and the Scottish fish farms etc etc. I wanted to go out and catch a massive salmon shove it up his arse by the end of the meal

Except he's not wrong.

He may not be but he still ate two pieces while lecturing me for about an hour. Half of the lecture being about how it’s the fault of Brexit

TheCrasher · 19/08/2025 13:58

@TottersBlankly , step-brother is what I think too.

Wild salmon is more plentiful in Nordic countries. My colleagues rave about it, apart from one brit who said he preferred tinned salmon. High five to him.
I don't eat fish.

Rollo was the son of Wayne's girlfriend but not of Wayne. He was no actual relation to Fallon at all

TottersBlankly · 19/08/2025 16:45

Isn’t that what I said? 😄

TheCrasher · 19/08/2025 17:20

I used the MN definition of step-brother, not the dictionary one.

BabyCatFace · 19/08/2025 17:26

I dropped off the archers because my mum died last year and I lost heart for it (she listened when I was a child and I thought it was soooo dull, and she liked the fact that in middle age I became a listener!) but I am going to jump back in so place marking for when I catch up!

What is the MN definition of step-brother? Any male offspring (by someone other than your father) of anyone your father had sex with, even if you didn't know either the offspring or the shagee until both you and said offspring were adults?

Welcome! I'm so sorry about your mum. Flowers My mum listened to it, probably with her parents, in the 1950s, but I think once she/they had a TV she broke the habit and only listened if it happened to be on while she was in the kitchen cooking. I grew up vaguely familiar with TA and then very much to my own surprise started listening by choice in the early 1980s. My addiction has proved unshiftable, in spite of many moans and gripes over the years! My own children are absolutely determined never to listen. Ah well.

The thread has picked up pace with all this talk of salmon and chips! I've never really recovered from Shirley Valentine talking about chips and egg. Wrong way round! Surely whatever you have with chips you always name that first and then add 'and chips'? Anyway. I love chips and would have them any day of the week. Chips as an accompaniment to salmon? I can't really see why not, but we don't usually. I bet we did at some point have tinned salmon, salad and chips when I was growing up. I still like tinned salmon once in a way, but usually in a sandwich.

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime MN step-sibling us your father or mother's partner or ex-partner's child from another relationship.
Dictionary definition is "A step-sibling is a child of your stepfather or stepmother with another person who is not your biological parent. "

@BabyCatFace , Sorry for your loss.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g , Something and chips, or something, something and chips, unless the something is gravy or sauce.
